So what you are saying is that Carlo is needed to bail out Krug on the defensive end. But also can play with anybody in the lineup
What we’re saying is that they bring out the best in each other. Carlo allows Krug to do his thing offensively and it makes the Bruins a better team. Krug helps Carlo out in the offensive zone and during transition.
Don’t look at it like Carlo is bailing Krug out defensively, look at it like they play great together and the team is better for it. Lucic needed Krejci to hit 30 goals, but I didn’t hold that against Lucic.

It would be like saying Chara needs McAvoy to bail him out.

Not the case at all, just complementary skillsets.

Also Carlo also has the ability to retrieve the puck and skate it out of his own zone, which saves miles and miles on Krugs legs during a playoff series. Which is immeasurable, when it comes to keeping one of the best offensive d-man in the league healthy and fresh.

Exactly, that’s what I was trying to say. Carlo covers for Krug defensively and Krug covers for Carlo offensively and the Bruins have a great 2nd pairing.

Feel like they got better the more they played together, it took a while for them to start to develop that consistency. By the time both Chara and McAvoy were out with injuries they managed the top-pairing work as well as you could expect. I'd hope with a full training camp and more experience they could start the year better than they did last year and hopefully that consistency will come.

That leaves two guys in Moore and Grz whose skating can be a big help with Miller on the third pairing.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say “bail out” but one has strengths over the other defensively and the other has strenghts over the other offensively.

So that’s exactly why they’re paired together

And he scored almost 60 points last season and was a plus what?

he was even...in the plus and minus

can you explain?

Krug was also a huge liability on the defensive end in the playoffs. It was the "momentum swing" factor ....when those 1st goals or quick goals given up after scoring....that had the Bruins on their heels for the meat stretch vs the Leafs and after 1st game vs lightening

you can't play confidently nor win in the playoffs like that

Can I explain why plus/minus is such a garbage stat?
Can I explain why people who reference it as a good defensive stat shouldn't be taken seriously?

It’s not a great stat per se. it can be indicative of trends though. Like if you’re constantly on the wrong end of it compared to your teammates it certainly raises the eyebrows.

But yes, not a great stat to use on its own without any context

He had a poor start to the year and dug himself a hole of -9 in October alone.

While he gave up some goals, Krug also scored some huge ones where if he didn’t, they weren’t getting past Toronto.

Overall Krug was on the ice for 108 goals for and 65 against. In the playoffs he was 21 for and 16 against

Gryz was on the ice for 51 for and 23 against. In the playoffs that was 5 for and 6 against.

Unfortunately the league has ruled that from now on powerplay goals only count as 1/4 goals, therefore making them far less valuable than even strength goals.

And where is McQuaid the lack of respect he gets around here is mind boggling . this is not directed at you personally, but the number of posters on here that dismiss what McQuaid bring to the team ?

I just think Miller is better, nothing but respect for what McQuaid brings to the lineup when he in in.

I’m not writing him off, I want the best 6 Defenceman in the lineup opening night. If McQuaid or Grz force the issue, play them instead.

To be fair, that 108 vs 65 has a lot to do with playing the PP and not the PK.

Gryz doesn't really play on the PK either. As for PP, though goals all count the same. You couldn't plug the other Bruin's D in that same exact spot last year and expect the same numbers. The closest would be McAvoy, and I could see him being better than Krug on the PP soon, but not last year.

PP goals and 5 on 5 goals are worth the same amount. Does seem like the Bruins have a tough time getting PPs in the playoffs, though. Perhaps that changes as more offensive skill makes its way to top 9.

Are those 5v5 or in all situations? Because if it’s all situation anyone who plays the power play and no penalty kill time are going benefit greatly from those numbers.

All because in the end of the day all situations matter. You can’t just plug a person into Krug’s spot on the PP and say they will help create the same amount of goals.

I’m just saying when you do all situations it’s going to heavily skew the totals for anyone who gets the benefit of playing a ton of power play time and seriously hurt players who play mostly the penalty kill.

Better to look at even strength or 5v5 because various players on this team see largely varying roles and opportunity.

yes, pretty easily too.

you see, in hockey, goals scored on the power play do not count towards your +/-. As such 24 of Krug's points didnt count towards his +/-

it isnt rocket science

16 against in the playoffs....One of the worst if not the worst stat in the playoffs

alot of these came off crucial 1st goals given up or quick rebound goals that sapped the teams momentum

Krug may have scored that key game 7 goal...but it didn't have to get to a game 7. Its medicine/poison

Krug in reality is really a third pairing D (on 5 v5) , PP specialist...... So Cassidy should drop him to this slot while keeping his PP slot the same. Yet the team just resigned a younger Grz , who is also a 3rd pairing D (and much better 5v5). Both are 3rd pairing Ds, both are undersized..... something has to give

Are you somehow blaming Krug for the Bruins going seven with Toronto? Also, the bolded will always be hilarious at this point.

I agree. He is a Penalty killing machine. He needs to be that sixth D-man.
