Habs fan here. Not a Leafs homer. Originally didn't have Ferland, and had Johnsson over Kapanen but had to change it last minute because it was really uneven. Please fix title mods :)

To Toronto: Hamilton, Pesce, (Ferland)

To Carolina: Zaitsev, Bracco, Sandin, 2020 1st, Johnsson (Kapanen instead of A.J if Ferland is involved)

Still think the Leafs have to add here, just not sure how much more. Adding Liljegren wouldn't make it work considering the Canes owner is gung-ho on getting forwards.

Thoughts?

Bracco, Sandin, 2020 1st, Kapanen

Leafs just burning through their future. No chance.

Really makes no sense for either. Leafs are left with no future and cost controlled assets and Canes get hosed value wise with giving up two right D and taking in Zaitsev. Leafs will also have to make serious adjustments to keep the team they’d have and while you include one of Johnsson or Kapanen, the other will be a cap casualty and probably same with Muzzin after this deal

The first is a huge no go as that’ll be a cost controlled depth piece and maybe more if they play it right. I think one of the biggest mistakes competitive teams make is trading 1st for rentals and just undervalue 1st in general, while this isn’t a rental deal they still shouldn’t trade back to back firsts.

This destroys Toronto's window to go all in on a year when the team we would play round two is on pace for 130 points.

Theys get a RD, a prospect LD a good forward and a prospect forward and next years first. what do they need?

What they DONT need is a RD, prospect LD, a good forward, and next years first.

Besides that package including nothing what Carolina wants, they would never trade 2 top pair RDs in the same deal.

What they do want is elite scorer. Carolina wants to add talent, they dont want to sell it for fairly mediocre futures.

Obviously, that is why this trade was offered. It guts the Leafs of their excellent futures.

If Johnsson + 2020 1st equals Hamilton and Sandin and Bracco equals Pesce (I doubt Carolina agrees), than Carolina makes Toronto the favor to pick up the Zaitsev contract for nothing at all.

The current proposal doesn't work for Carolina because of Zaitsev's contract and it sets them a few years back. On the other hand if you take out Zaitsev, it doesn't work for Toronto, as they will have to let go an even more valuable piece in the summer as a cap casualty.

Back to drawing board and closed.

Wow, how could Carolina say no to this? A bottom six forward with 50 nhl games under his belt and a bunch of magic beans for two top 4 RHD with term. Not to mention that said forward is a lefty and the Canes already have Nino, Teravainen, Ferland, Svechnikov, McGinn, Martinook, and Maenalanen as left handed wingers. And then next year when Faulk is a UFA, the Canes get to have Zaitsev as their top RHD.

Good job taking both teams needs into account here.

Scoring a right handed defender and they also get prospects.

They're spitting distance of the playoffs, trying to make the playoffs for the 1st time in a decade. So...what do they need from a trade?

*An established, young building block top-line Forward. No, that's not Kapanen or AJ. Not even both. Nylander? Maybe...though for the Canes that's preferably an offseason trade, post bonus. You need to give up something bigger for what you've asked for.

*To trade no more than 1 top-4 RHD(Pesce or Hamilton)...including a second lower-tier RHD might be possible depending on the quality of the return.

*No defensemen back. No LHD, RHD, veterans, specs, Zaitsev, Lil, Sandin, not even Rielly or Muzzin. No defensemen.

*Todays, not futures.

*If they could gut the playoffs chances of a team in front of them, thus improving their own chances of making the playoffs, that would be good too.
