The problem is that since Ottawa gave him a qualifying offer, that likely means that whoever has Ceci's rights will likely have to sign him for a year unless he gets above $4.6 million or so in arbitration.

have you seen Zaistev's contract? It's ugly and long.
Exactly what Iam saying, there is no way Ottawa should do this....We however have some Leaf fans that think its a good deal for us??Unless we get a very decent add....We should be looking elsewhere

Yep ,so we let him walk after 1 season, its still far better than being attached to Zaitsev for 3 more after that

I wonder if Ottawa is also sending one of their LTIR guys as well.

I doubt the Leafs want to take on a big LTIR cap hit. I also don't think it benefits Ottawa to move Gaborik or MacArthur. Both are apparently insured which makes them great assets for the Senators. The Senators can get almost 10 million worth of cap space covered while paying much less than 2 million in real dollars.

Harpur will 100 percent be in the trade. Makes too much sense since it costs the Leafs nothing cap wise. Sens might have to take an AHL contract though.

Condon is the next most likely. 1.4M cap hit against a 3M salary. Toronto had interest in Condon when he was a UFA, so there's a connection there. The Leafs obviously would only be taking him to facilitate dumping Zaitsev, not because they want Condon, but maybe because they liked the player previously they might think they can make something good out of him as a cap dump and rejuvenate his career as a possible candidate for their backup job.

Zack Smith would be a dark horse. 3.25M cap hit. Placed on waivers last year by the Senators. There was interest from teams, but they wanted Ottawa to hold back cash. Fits a need of Toronto if their player evaluation is off enough to think he's still a gritty 3C who can score. Toronto would move Kadri for assets and replace him with the slightly cheaper Zack Smith.

Why would Ottawa give up a young defenseman for a cap dump? They must be getting a pick at least.

I dont see the Sens motivation for this unless they're also getting Bracco and a 2nd round pick

My #Senspiracy is that Dorion is on thinner ice than we think, and Melnyk wants the team to take a huge step forward this year or he is out.

If that's the situation, from a purely self preservation stand point, this trade starts looking really really good for Dorion.

If we assume it's Harpur/Condon/Ceci for Zaitsev/Brown (after bonuses are paid), instead of paying Ceci 5Mish through arbitration to play those minutes, he trades for Russian Ceci at a much lesser cost. The Leafs actually give the Senators budget space this year since Ceci @ 5 VS Zaitsev (with Condon/Harpur dumped) opens up an additional 2.3M for the Senators.

If Ceci and Zaitsev are close in on ice value, better to have Zaitsev this year for -2.3 million than Ceci for as much as 5.
