I disagree. The one specified in the title is best in the cap era. That doesn't say overall, it says since the cap came in.

The Hawks IMO were the best. Their peak and dominance has been unmatched in the cap era.

The best franchise over the whole cap era, which includes every year of the cap. Sure the Hawks had the best peak of 5 or so years, but had many more down years than the Pens as well.

To me who's #1 and #2 are obvious.

Seems crazy easy five just debate of the order

1 Pittsburgh 3 cups, 4 finals, conpetitive for longer then Chi
2 Chicago 3 cups
3 LA, 2 cups
4 Washington 1 cup, generally always high ranking and competitive
5 Boston, 1 cup, 2 finals

Although it should be pointed out, they both have something in common.. Illegal deals signed under the old CBA for some of their best pieces.

For sure, basically all the successful teams have benefitted from some questionable signings/deals.

Pens: Crosby/Malkin
Caps: Ovi
Hawks: Keith/Hossa
Wings: Zetterberg (not when they were at their best though)
LA: Richards disappearing

Wings also have a cup and 2 finals (same as Bruins/better than Caps) and were also very high in the standings until recently. Weird to omit them

I think Anaheim is getting underrated here. They’ve been a contender for as long as any other team here

What's not legit about Ovechkin's contract? It's doesn't have any years tacked on.

The rankings prove that people value cups over regular season success. No one remembers the streak of success that SJ had in the regular season. The fact that Carolina is mentioned ahead of San Jose shows how valuable a cup is. Since they won in 2005, the Canes have made the playoffs once, while the Sharks have missed the playoffs once in 13 years.

I think San Jose deserves some love despite no cup win. Very consistant team the last decade+.

For sure. Although their regular season success is likely forgotten for how many times they flopped in the playoffs as the favorite

I don't see how you can easily pick those 5 and leave Detroit with 1 Cup, 2 finals, & Anaheim with 1 Cup, 4 conference Finals out of the debate

I think if you ask fans which they would rather;

A.) 1 Cup win and 9 seasons without playoffs
B.) 10 consecutive playoffs seasons, but no cup

I assume the vast majority would take the former. It shouldn't be a surprise that people take cup wins over regular season success.

Not sure how anyone can put Detroit over Boston if we look at the whole last 10-15 years with emphasis on now as well

Why are we putting an emphasis on now? They actually have very similar success rates since the lockout?

Detroit:
Five 1st rd loses
Three 2nd rd loses
One 3rd rd loss
One finals loss
One cup win
Two missed playoffs
* Cup/Finals were back to back
** about to be 3 playoff loses

Boston:
Three 1st rd loses
Four 2nd rd loses
Zero 3rd rd loses
One finals loss
One cup win
Four missed playoffs
*will very likely make the playoffs this season

How exactly is Boston at a clear advantage?

You are using the Hawks past their prime. They had the most dominant stretch in the cap era is my point.

For example I would say a team with 4 cups in a row >> a team with 4 cups in 10 years.

If you are going to narrow the time frame (which isn't what the OP asked), the most dominant stretch was a repeat.
