This article is compiled with the greatest moments in Toronto’s major sports teams (NHL, NBA, MLB) in the last 30 years. Before beginning, let’s start with a few honourable mentions that didn’t make the cut.

HM:
  • Vladdy’s Record Breaking HR Derby (2019)
  • The Leafs Winning the Draft Lottery to Select Auston Matthews (2016)
  • Dave Stieb’s No Hitter (1990)
  • Sundin breaks Maple Leafs Goals and Points Record (2007)
  • Opening of the Skydome (1989)
  • The Raptors beat the Bulls (1996)
  • Raptors trade Demar Derozan (2018)
  • John Tavares comes home (2018)
  • Leafs trade for Gilmour (1992)
  • Dave Stewart’s No Hitter (1990)
  • Leafs final game at the Gardens (1999)
  • Raptors draft Damon Stoudimire (1995)
10. Gilmour in double OT (1993)

The Leafs and Blues faced off in the 1993 Norris Division Finals. Both really good teams, this series was set to be a treat for hockey fans and it did not disappoint. The game went into double overtime where 3 minutes and 16 seconds in, Doug Gilmour worked his magic behind the net where he quickly faked going left and wrapped the puck in on the right side of legendary goalie Curtis Joseph to give the Maple Leafs a crucial game 1 win.

9. The Bat Flip (2015)

Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS may have been the craziest game in the history of Toronto Blue Jays baseball. The game is tied in the top of the 7th when Jays catcher Russell Martin attempts to throw the ball back to the pitcher Aaron Sanchez but in doing so, he threw the ball off the bat of Rangers batter, Shin Soo Choo. This resulted in a live ball in which the Rangers scored off of to make it 3-2. During the bottom of the 7th, the Rangers committed 3 errors which allowed the Jays to score 1 while leaving 2 on base for Jose Bautista to unload on a baseball to left field. Obviously, his bat flip towards the Rangers dugout cause plenty of controversy. The Jays would go onto to win the game, advancing them to the ALCS.

8. Air Canada is born (2000)

The 2000 NBA Dunk Contest was one of the most legendary performances in dunk contest history. Vince Carter would win over the judges by performing a series of high difficulty dunks. Vince Carter’s final dunk of the contest however may be the most iconic dunk in Toronto. Vince did a one handed 360 reverse dunk which was followed by him going up to the camera where he uttered the words “Its over.”

7. Roberto Alomar’s Home Run in the ALCS (1992)

In Game 4 of the ALCS, the Blue Jays were down 6-1 against the A's. They fought their way back to make it 6-4 and then in the 9th, Roberto Alomar hit a game-tying 2-run home run off Dennis Eckersley (the best closer in the league at the time), forcing the game into extra innings. The Blue Jays scored a run in the 11th inning and won the game 7-6, taking a 3-1 stranglehold on the series. They Jays would go on to win their first World Series this year.

6. Auston Matthews’ NHL Debut (2016)

Shortly after the Leafs drafted Matthews first overall, Matthews won the hearts of Maple Leafs fans across the city. Everyone glued to their televisions to see the debut of the new look Leafs. Fresh off of a last place finish, the Maple Leafs had little to no expectations coming into the season. In Ottawa, Matthews scored 4 goals in the first game of the regular season to break a record for most goals in a debut.

5. Nikolai Borchevsky’s Overtime Winner (1993)

The 1993 playoffs were a wild one for the Maple Leafs as they advanced to the 2nd round to play against the 103 point, star studded Detroit Red Wings. The Leafs quickly found themselves down 3-1 in the series but despite the odds, the Leafs didn’t quit. The Leafs battled back to send the series to 7 and in overtime, Nikolai Borchevsky deflects the puck past the Red Wings netminder to shock the Wings in Detroit.

4. Kawhi’s “The Shot” (2019)

2nd round of the east conference playoffs, game tied at 90, the Raptors need to inbound the ball with 4.2 seconds left. The ball goes to Kawhi Leonard, he runs to the right of the basketball and hits a fadeaway mid range jump shot over Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid to send the Raptors to the ECF. This shot became the first ever game 7, buzzer beater in NBA history.

3. Joe Carter’s Walk Off Home Run (1993)

2-2 count, runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, bottom of the 9th, World Series on the line, Joe Carter steps up and hits a home run to straight away left field that would give them their 2nd World Series pennant in as many years.

2. Toronto Raptors win the NBA Championship (2019)

The Raptors became the first team outside of the US to win the Larry O'Brien on the shoulders of superstar Kawhi Leonard. They dethroned the reigning champions, Golden State Warriors whose stars Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson were injured for part of the series

1. Toronto Blue Jays win the World Series Twice (1992-1993)

This and the Raptors championship were very hard to decide between as both were Toronto’s first championship in their respective sport. The only reason this was over the Raptors is purely because the Jays went back-to-back

Thoughts? Did I miss anything?

Nice list but 1 and 3 are pretty much the same thing. Both are the Blue Jays winning the same game/World Series...

It kills me as a Ticats fan to say this but the Argos winning the 100th Grey Cup at Skydome belongs on that list. Also TFC winning MLS in 2017.

Personally I think the Bat flip should be slightly higher and "the shot". I think its also because I have a different definition of moment. I would not consider the back to back world series a singular moment, but a longer period of greatness built on many individual moments.

My rankings for the top 3 would be;
1) Joe Carter HR
2) "The shot"
3) Bautista bat flip

Added HMs: Altidore goal in the MLS finals, EE HR against the Orioles

Being a Toronto sports fan hasn't been nearly as bad as it's commonly made out to be. And, of course, that's due to some recent developments.

It is bad for 90% of the time or more.

Consider this. After the Blue Jays won the World Series, it would be 20 years before the baseball team would make the playoffs again. During that 20 years, instead of spending money to build a competitive team, the Blue Jay front office try to build winners nickle and dime their way to success. The average attendance was one of the highest in baseball in the 1990s, only to decline continually for the next 20 years.

I have absolutely no interest in silly non-game theatrics like home-run and dunking contests, so those are out for me.

Joe Carter's home run, the only time in world series history where a home run took a team from behind in the bottom of the ninth to winning the series. (Mazeroski's was the only one in a game seven, but the score was tied at the time.)

I would also consider Olerud, Molitor, and Alomar finishing 1, 2, and 3 in batting average in the AL in 1993 (the only time teammates have done it since 1893).

In the last 30 years or so the MLS and CFL have been 4th and 5th in Toronto sports so I just decided to leave those 2 of this list however I also would have put the 1991 Grey Cup (i think at least) in there. Also Giovinco's record breaking MVP season would be there

I wouldn't exactly call the dunk contest silly as it was very influential to basketball in Canada. People in the States would only really watch the Raptors to watch VC or better known as Air Canada dunk the ball.

Uhhhhh idk about that...look at the amount of moments there are from i'd say 2001 until like 2015, its been pretty terrible in that time frame.

You just need to make Blue Jays 1992 #3, and Joe Carter/Blue Jays 1993 #1. Improves clarity and more accurate.

You can also move Auston Matthews' debut to #10, and push up the others 1 spot.

Alomar's 92 ALCS home-run needs to be higher than Matthews debut and probably ahead of Borechevsky's goal. It's arguably the monumental moment in the Jays first World Series run by the only player who is likely to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame wearing a Jays cap anytime soon.

I think the Dunk contest is overrated. Yeah, it was cool, but it was just a side-show at an all-star game. Things that happened in real moments of importance should matter, such as EE's homerun to get us into the playoffs.

10. Led by Raghib “The Rocket” Ismail, the Argonauts would Win the 1991 Grey Cup. Arguably the last time the Argonauts franchise was really relevant to the city, having poached a young phenom from the States and consisting of an ownership group of John Candy, Wayne Gretzky, and Bruce McNall.

9. Auston Matthews scores Four Goals in his NHL debut, setting a new NHL record.

8. Josh Donaldson runs home off an error to walk off and sweep the Texas Rangers to send the Jays to the ALCS in 2016.

7. Toronto FC wins their first MLS Championship in 2017, avenging their 2016 Finals loss against the Seattle Sounders.

6. Jose Bautista bat-flip during a wild 7th inning that helped the Jays defeat the Texas Rangers and move on to the ALCS in 2015.

5. Nikolai Borschevsky scores in overtime to help the Leafs upset the Detroit Red Wings in ‘93.

4. Raptors defeat the heavily favoured Golden State Warriors in 6 games to win the franchises first Championship and give the city of Toronto their first major Championship since ‘93.

3. Jays winning the ‘92 World Series. First World Series for the franchise and first major Championship for a Toronto team since ‘67.

2. Kawhi Leonard’s Series Winning shot against Philadelphia en route to the Raptors first NBA Championship. The fact that Kawhi Leonard basically did what Vince Carter couldn't 18 years prior and against he same 76ers franchise, it's out of a movie.

1. Joe Carter’s Walk-Off Homer to win the ‘93 World Series. Short of a OT Championship winning goal for the Leafs in the Stanley Cup Finals or a Championship winning bucket for the Raptors in the NBA Finals, nothing can possibly top a walk off home run to win the World Series.

Honourable mentions to Vince Carter’s Dunk Contest win in 2000, Leafs Draft Lottery win, TFC’s CONCACAF Fnals run, Argos winning the 100th Grey Cup, Vlad Jr.’s Home Run Derby performance, Gilmour’s behind the net goal against St. Louis in '93, Dave Stieb no-hitter.

1. Nothing beat Carter walk off HR. That’s the best moment in TO sports history. Might even be the best moment in Baseball History. Every kid dream is to hit a game winning come from behind HR to win it all for their team. Carter did that and more. If only it was Game 7, bottom of the 9, 2 outs and 3-2 count.
Raptors winning it all or the double OT win in Game 3 against the Bucks or the Shot.
Dougie doubt OT winner, TFC winning it all, Argo winning two years or three years ago.

I've been a die hard Toronto sports fan since birth (1994) and there is not a single more exhilarating moment than the bat flip since I've been alive. Yes more exhilarating than Kawhi's "shot".

All the emotion from the top of the 7th inning and it being an elimination game lead to absolute insanity for all of Canada. I still get goosebumps every single time I watch it.

Bautista bat flip for me. It pretty much clinched the series for us after being 0-2 dropping the first 2 games at home. That was a great comeback. I was absolutely overjoyed we were able to do it.
