I just don't see the point of it. Even as a tryout. If you were that worried about the D, Fayne should have been re-signed.

Sometimes its a favor...It gets the player seen by other teams during exhibition even if the Devils have no intention on signing him...

I could see a scenario where Lou gives him a shot just to get him some exposure.

Stralman attended training camp with the Devils in 2011 and would have been signed, except the Devils had too many players. General manner Lou Lamoriello decided the Devils needed to have Petr Sykora’s offense and asked Stralman to wait around until he could open a roster spot by making a trade.

“It worked out fine. The problem was they didn’t have a roster spot because they signed Sykora,†Stralman recalled. “They told me to hang around. He (Lamoriello) was trying to make a deal for me to get in, but it was taking a little longer than Lou wanted and I couldn’t wait forever, either.

I forgot all about this. I remember Kaberle being not too forgiving of Cam because of that. He said he didn't even want to hear from him after that.

I think he's done but I'd be cool with a tryout. I've always been a big fan of his, extremely underrated player when he was in his prime.

That was basically the gist of what Kaberle told the media last week. He looked like toast when he was in Carolina, but I wouldn't be opposed to him being in camp and even suiting up in a preseason game. Last year when the Devils had back-to-back preseason games, the coaching staff used 11 D for those two games. There's a back-to-back early this preseason, so I'd imagine they would use 10-11 D again. Albeit last year the travel was more daunting (Montreal/Newark) than it would be this year (Philadelphia/Brooklyn).

Defenceman Tomas Kaberle, a fan favourite over a 13-year Leaf career that ended in 2011, says he may have an NHL tryout offer on the table in September.

“I’m planning to stay here if possible,” said Kaberle, who played in his native Czech Republic for Kladno last year. “There might be a tryout. We’ll see what happens.”

Kaberle was at the BioSteel hockey camp Monday, looking fit at 36 years old. Leaf fans need not entertain the notion of a return to the blue and white, though. Asked where the tryout might be, he coyly replied, “Not in Ontario.”
