It's a big difference, future picks have less value in trades than current ones.
How big is one year worth?

I agree that draft picks have time value but how many spots is 1 year worth in the second round round? 10? 30? 60?

Im agreeing there is a difference but I don’t think it’s big, imo.

No one expected us having to be at this point with Toffoli when the deal was made in the summer to begin with.

We figured we'd be in a tight battle for a playoff spot, or have one close to locked up, and we wouldn't have to worry about selling him anyway.

Toffoli held up his end of the bargain by being a productive player. Unfortunately, the team didn't win enough games. The market is what the market is on deadline day. I have a tough time being annoyed by any of this other than we're in this position at all.

I'm very skeptical a 2025 2 from Winnipeg was the best offer out there. If it was then you do that deal at 3 PM, not hours before then...you aren't gonna lose out on a 2025 2 by waiting.
It’s mind blowing.

VAN, LA, VEGAS, NYR, BOS were all interested.

To not at least get a 2024 2nd….its egregious. Henrique netted a first!!!

I’ve been an avid Fitz supporter and his work but my opinion of him has radically changed this year.
Well that second is still a pretty good assset to have at the deasline next year.

Is WPG's 2025 2nd worth less than its 2024 2nd? I'm not sure even with time value of draft picks logic. WPG might not be so good in 2025 and I believe this draft is considered shallow.

They don't have their own 2nd, they have Montreal's. Which everyone is upset about us not getting because it'd be a higher pick in that round.

I'm not really bent out of shape about it because I simply envision us using whatever extra picks we have as ammo in another deal.

They don't have their own 24 second. They have Montreal's 24 second, which is goingn to be a very good pick. The 25 second definitely going to be worth significantly less.

I mean, Guentzel didn’t even get a first at the end of the day. Should have just made it a conditional first if the Jets win the cup, same likelihood as the Canes lol.

Why would anyone think that when they've signed Helle and other guys longer term, hell they might even try and sign Toffoli long term. They're firmly a win-now team for the next couple years, one year isn't gonna be a big difference unless Helle gets injured or some shit like that next year.
