Death threats are cool, right?
Almost as uncool as Foegele's incredibly reckless play.
I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt by just calling it reckless.
Death threats are cool, right?
It does when it sparks the team. This is by far the best game they've played in this series. However you'd like to spin it, it looks exactly like they flipped a switch.
The problem with this angle is that it implies the Caps were just coasting around with their thumbs up their butts until that one hit.
This has been a hard fought series from the first puck drop. Caps were rolling in the first two games and there was no talk about them “sleeping” (that changed when they lost a couple, because sports fans have goldfish memories). They were no more asleep in games 3/4 than the Canes were in 1/2/5. Both teams have been grinding their asses off.
It’s an insult to both teams, and the trench work they’ve both done at the expense of several key injuries, to imply that they just now decided to show up.
Caps fans on our own board were not happy with the first two games even though the team won. Some on this board also said they did not look good, or were benefiting from bad play by Mrazek.
We've seen enough of this team to know when they're not firing on all cylinders. In the first 4 games there were maybe 2-3 periods where they really looked like themselves, but most of the time they were listless and sloppy, as they've been off and on for much of the regular season.
Last night is their "other gear" that we saw them ride to the Cup in last year's playoffs. It's much more aggressive and decisive. DSP coming back definitely helped, as did Ovechkin calling out the team in the press. Carlson going back to his regular position was a boost as well. They also rallied around what happened to Oshie. These are all real factors that made G5 very different from the previous games in the series where they were way too flat 2/3 of the time.
Ok, so how about this:
Caps didn’t do anything special last game. The Canes just didn’t show up, didn’t seem to try very hard, and handed them an easy win. They’ve done that from time to time all year, just playing flat and not really being competitive.
Sounds like complete nonsense, doesn’t it?
Also, when caps are physical like yesterday it ends teams. Think about all the series last year towards end of them. Caps seem to be stronger and wear teams down more. They destroyed Blue Jackets end of series winning last 2 games of series. Pitt was handled Last 2 games of that series. Tampa was destroyed last two games of that series. Vegas was handled end of the series too with 4 straight.
Truth is, this current Caps team seems to be a team that as it gets deeper into a series it’s trouble for opponents. In games 5-7 last year caps were 7-1 last year
Yes it does if we're making it up. But I'm not. People who have watched the Caps know the difference. Maybe the Canes were off their form, but that was a "different" Caps team than before, no question. And we recognize it.
How about this:
Another poster on our board reminded us:
Series Discussion: - The less important playoff series' (non-Caps ones) Part the Second
I'm not saying the Canes stink. They're good. I'm not saying the Caps are guaranteed to win. They're not. But I am saying with 100% certainty that they were not playing anywhere near their potential in the first 4 games of this series, and we have seen this movie before.
Patrick Kane broke his collarbone the same way. This idea that it isn’t dirty or dangerous is bs.It's an absolute joke that this wasn't a suspension. I have no bias for either team, that was a garbage play.
All I’m saying is, the “X finally woke up” narrative ignores the real-life interplay between two teams who are going at it tooth and nail for 6+ games.
If you want to say the Caps physicality is wearing on the Canes, that’s a totally different story. Carolina has lost an entire forward line to injury in this series, that didn’t come from nothing. But the whole “Caps finally decided to show up” thing? Nah. That’s a 12 year old’s view of how a hockey series works (recognizing that you weren’t the one pushing that angle).
It is a popular narrative for a reason.
You ever worked out, played hockey, gone on a bike ride, etc. and thought you were giving it your all when you were really just giving what you were comfortable with giving? And then something, whatever it is, allows you to find an extra gear that you recognize but can't exactly tap into on command yet?Because it’s a way to distill a bafflingly complicated series of events into something simple.
That doesn’t make it true. If you seriously think that the Capitals finally remembered in Game 87 that they are professional hockey players and then suddenly started trying hard, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s a popular but stupid way to think about how sports works.

I’m sure Alex Ovechkin gave Evgeny Svechnikov’s threats precisely as much concern as they warranted, which is to say NONE. Not surprisingly the same amount of concern everyone should give these random internet talking heads. As Aaron Rodgers said: R-E-L-A-X.
So some anonymous posters on social media act stupid - who knew that could happen? Even so, that doesn't compare to Svech's brother threatening Ovechkin.
Seems pretty hypocritical to whine about social media posters when a family member of your own is making far more tangible threats.
And BTW - whoever said that the dumba$$ death threats were cool?

I hate to use the HF Boards cliche'--but where is Oshie's duty to protect himself? He was in a battle going into that play and even though he wasn't completely set on his skates, he turns into the boards instead of the end wall. And where was he looking? At the puck--which is exactly where you don't want to be looking while at the circles or below. As any coach has told him since he was a mite, you go where your eyes go--he was looking down and took a push--so when he turned into the boards and lost an edge, he went down. It isn't Fogele's job to protect a player from himself.
I especially chucked at this part of the post. Lol like Oshie made a sudden turn or something. It was reckless (and unfortunate) and it resulted in a major injury.I hate to use the HF Boards cliche'--but where is Oshie's duty to protect himself? Wilson has broken the Pens org and their fanbase. It's just remarkable at this point.Foegle is just a big strong man...he can't help that it's physics!
