I wonder if that was at least in part because of the team's constant underachievement? It seemed like just as the city was getting excited about the team at playoff time, they would squander a series lead to Edmonton and Vancouver and crap out in the first round again, followed by losing a couple of key free agents in the off-season and missing the playoffs the year after.
Had the Jets managed even one decent playoff run in their last six or seven years I'm sure the city would have really rallied behind the team a lot more than it did. In some ways, watching the Jets of the early-mid 90s felt like watching an IHL team with a bunch of journeymen, old vets and handful of up and comers mixed together.
But that's kind of the problem isn't it? A team can't survive long term without fans that are dedicated to the team through thick and thin. The Jets 1.0 like myself and others have said, had plenty of fans, but they also had plenty of fans who thought of the Jets as their "B" team (like many on this thread).
We need to have Winnipeggers thinking of the Jets 2.0 as their "A" team. At multiple points in our history, we are going to go through rebuilding years where we lose a lot more than we win. We can't have everyone abandoning the team and going to cheer for the Leafs or Habs because those are their "real" favorite teams.
