obvious answer is to acquire (bernier, schneider) or draft a talented young goaltender to take over for fleury. should have been done many years ago. worst case scenario, you have a young potential starter and trade him away for assets like van and la did.

instead you have the current situation-- goalie delivers multiple historically awful playoffs and then one decent one, then boom, immediately sign him for the rest of crosby/malkin primes.

when espn does a 30 for 30 segment on how the pens went on to become one of the biggest underachieving teams in nhl history, the organization's refusal to move on from fleury will be at the top of list for reasons why, along with keeping bylsma around as long as they did.

Either of those goalies would have been a HUGE help in Game 7 of the Tampa series... or the entire 2012 Boston series... or the 2014 Rangers series...

;) 1 goal in 2 game7´s combined. 2 goals in the whole Boston series. Playing like garbage against the Metro this year, being outplayed in every facet of the game.. Yeah, but Fleury is our main problem :sarcasm:

Ragamuffin Gunner was spot on, might as well close the thread because he answered it all.

Which goaltender doesn't have a SV% above .900 in Jan? ;)

Hint: MAF
Actually, he's been giving us consistently ****** goaltending since Christmas

10 losses in his last 13 starts :(

Recap:

MAF in NYR game 7
-Gives up first goal in 5min of play
-Pens tie it up
-Gives up 2nd goal 3.5min later
-Pens out-shoot NYR 36:20 but lose.
-MAF has 2 goals against on 20 shots. Lundqvist gives up 1 on 35 shots.

Our goalie walks away with no blame. :shakehead. It's our team's fault despite outshooting other team by 15 shots? :sarcasm:

I'm sorry, but if you only give up 20 shots, you should be winning that game 9 times out of 10.

The big one is Crosby's concussion and ohwaithisneckthingtoo, not playing in the Winter Classic, not letting him play with a concussion, catching the neck injury earlier, etc. Bylsma not being allowed to sit in his own excrement for so long, 2012 should have been the end for him; Crosby's injury probably helped prolong that mess, though.

Aside from that I'm going to do a nice long list with some points clearly being more important.

1) Not neglect the elephant in the room that was MAF for so long, goalie coach, shrink, trade, whatever, it shouldn't have taken so long to do anything.
2) Not draft Joe Morrow and instead draft Saad, Jenner or one of the other good forwards drafted after him. It kills the Morrow for Morrow deal, too.
3) Not do two 2nds for Murray.
4) Didn't Shero trade away a pick that they needed to trade up to draft Tarasenko? Not do that. No offense to Bennett.
5) Not re-sign Adams.
6) Draft Forsberg instead of Pouliot but if other things happened it's less of a point.
7) Trade Orpik last season.
8) Not sign Scuderi.
9) Not re-sign Kunitz and Dupuis, especially Kunitz, which probably would have happened if Shero bothered to draft forwards and didn't back himself into a corner.
10) Not acquire Iginla but that could be different without Bylsma, but then again he looked blah on top of Einstein not understanding that he was a RW.
11) Not let Michalek decide where he got traded.
12) Not sign Glass.

There's probably more. Everything around Morrow haunts me, it went from bad to worse.

Were you watching that game, though? It was painful, but I remember it so well. Like it was yesterday, really. Pens were dominating in possession but there was no creativity at all. Perimeter shots against Lundqvist, the Rags were packed in their zone and weren´t giving up serious chances. Those NYR shots on the other hand, man, were there some grade A chances, breakaways, 2-on-1s etc. At least 7-8 odd man rushes in that game against us. Anyway, I´m not saying that Fleury is good or something, I don´t really care about him. Not when the rest of the team plays like crap, when we can´t score, when our PP dies when we need it most and when our D collapses that much. Fleury is not ideal but there are at least 4-5 more prominent problems than him now.

Why not just properly develop your #1 overall goalie instead?

As mentioned previously, there were some brutal moments and even more important mistakes than acquiring Douglas Murray. But HOW IN THE WORLD can a zombie UFA on his last legs like Douglas Murray fetch 2 2nds is beyond me. That´s clearly the most lopsided one which had no chance of panning out. Everything else had at least a slight chance of not looking too bad, but Murray trade was a complete joke immediately with zero potential. Wow, was Shero drunk that day or what??

I though of a few more (ISWT!):

Don't sign Eaton to play over Des
Don't trade Z for garbage and go all in for two guys you had no shot at
Don't sign Glass
Fire Meloche and get MAF a real coach

Not cheating (by reading other posts) I would say the following 20/20 Hindsight moves would make us all happy campers:

1. Summer of 2010 (that counts right?) we trade Jordan Staal to Ottawa for Pick 16 (Tarasenko) and Chris Neil. Once the injury debacle clears from the upcoming season, Dan Blysma has the opportunity to **** this up in 2011-2012:

Dupuis - Sid - Tarasenko
Kunitz - Geno - Neal

(He will **** this --and other things-- up, but he won't be fired. Yet.)

2. Summer of 2011 we Draft Saad, not Morrow.

Despite Sid and Geno being healthy during the 2011-2012 season and having two young studs that are NHL ready and close to it, Bylsma will "disco" that lineup into oblivion. But not fired, cuz he's grindin' out them reg'lar season wins, baby... and bringing those young studs along the WBS way!

3. During the 2013 season, Shero sees the light that Mario shines in his face, and Dan Bylsma and his minions are fired (including Craig Adams). Ray Shero has learned his lesson about being overly loyal to the "gritty guys of the glory years" and

4. We all leave in peace and harmony, our Cups floweth over.

Today top F could be: Sid, Geno, Neal/Hornqvist, Tarasenko, Saad. The only thing we'd be missing is DP. Seems like a perfectly fair and reasonable trade-off to me.
