Hey Bad Goalie, it's been a while since I've posted here but I just wanted to get your thoughts on this article I was reading over at Canucks Army - what do you think of Holm and how accurate is this breakdown?

Deep Dive: The Canucks Might Have Something in Philip Holm

We have seen Holm on home ice in 5 games and the Comets were not good in most of them and the D was very weak on many occasions and no D-man was innocent. Holm like the rest had serious difficulty dealing with forwards making life difficult by taking up positions in or around the crease and then having a mate carry the puck into that area. Do I play the guy I'm covering or take on the serious danger of the puck carrier entering the scoring area? They were confused as Hell and got little help from forwards especially the Centers who should have collapsed down low in the slot.

let me come back to this

Utica Comets at Laval Rocket (Montreal affiliation)

Laval 3rd in the North Division at 8-5-2-0
Utica tied for last in the North Division at 5-6-0-1, but also 2 points from last in the entire AHL.
It's very early in the season, but this spot in the standings IS cause for alarm.

Forwards:
Goldobin/Bancks/Boucher
Laplante/Cassels/D'Aoust
Carcone/Chaput/McEwen
Megna/Darcy/LaBate

D-pairs:
Sautner/Sifers
Holm/Brisebois
McEneny/Subban

Goal - Demko

Scratches:
Hamilton (INJ)
Archibald (INJ)
Woods (INJ)
Rodin (ILL?)
Molino
Chatfield
Bachman

McEney takes a big hit and is down. Now on 1 knee, but the trainer is out. Being helped skating off the ice and down the tunnel.

Comets down a D and the rotation will begin. The Comets only have 1 extra D on the roster. It's Chatfield, scratched tonight.

If Rodin is ill and it's anything like Carcone's illness, the Comets only have 1 extra forward as well, Molino tonight. Cull or Johnson are slow on the trigger. Green never allowed his available reserves to shrink. PTOs or call-ups occurred with regularity to insure against manpower emergencies. By bringing them in whenever #s were threatened, they were able to practice and learn the systems before their emergency services were required.

A lot of perimeter play and no chances from the 1st unit.

2nd unit out and not doing much better.

No go.

Big scrum before the play gets going and Carcone is in the middle of it. Majors issued. Terry escorted out. Could be a 10 or a game. We are dealing with Zilch so who knows. He doesn't . They were sent to the locker rooms for the major. no biggie.

Comets get the extra man out it.

Third PP, and no significant danger has occurred on any of them. This one included. 0/3.

3 for their last 33! That says it all.

Now Laplante wants to go with Carr, but it's broken right up. Laplante had drawn a penalty, but with his midget mind all he could think of was go get bad man, fight bad man. Coincidental minors.

Now Bancks gets 2 for slashing.

Rocket 4 on 3 and a one timer off the face off and it's in.

2-0 Rocket. 19:29

Rocket 2/2 and the Comets 0/3 with nary a threat.

As I have stated in prior recent posts the Comets are not good in their own end and who the keeper is won't matter. Demko is likely not going to be sharp tonight with his time off siting on the Vancouver bench.

People will disagree with me, but if the Canucks have no plans to use the call-up, Demko should stay put in Utica. His development is more important than a "reward" for some good play early in the season. He should be striving to take the #1 spot and holding it for the season. Bachman should settle in as the back-up. He's not ready for the big time and he needs to play regularly in order to get there.

Cull refuses to put a lineup together with the top 3 followed by next best 3 and then next, etc. with all the forwards he has available. He keeps trying to fit pegs into the holes and come up with a balanced roster. It's why none of the lines have any chemistry or scoring touch. Having 2 lines you know are dangerous every shift beats 4 lines of guessing games. The Comets are almost the lowest scoring team in the AHL and with their D-struggles it doesn't bode well the minute they go down.

Comets to PP #4

Carcone/Megna/LaBate/Chaput/Subban

This is new.

They make something happen and a good save is made.

LaBate now involved in nonsense. The Comets have 3 guys who don't have any idea how to handle the rough stuff. They have cellophane hides and go nuts at the blink of an eye, LaBate, Carcone, and Laplante. They are so easy to bait it's beyond words. Comets are on a PP and LaBate is responding to a needle that could end the PP. So stupid.

PP is over. 0/4.

I just finish mentioning it and here goes Laplante. Haymaker traded back and forth. Laplante does not defend he just throws right hand after right hand like a machine. 5 each.

Comets to the PP again and it's becoming old hat. Comets get a PP and 2 minutes later it ends with no serious threat.

Big save. At least a chance!
Holm one timer blocked.
Comets dump and chase on the PP. Lose it.
Breakaway SH. Shoots over the net. GETS IT AGAIN! and gets another try. Did anyone even bother to get back?
This is just too much to even believe. Almost every game SH breakaways against the PP.

This game like most of the recent is heavily one sided. The chances are far more dangerous for the opponent than the type of shots the Comets put on net. The foe sets up and gets real good, close, unchallenged scoring chances. The SOG end up being close, but the shots missed, blocked, tipped, and pucks bouncing over sticks or just out of reach add up to 2 to 3 times more dangerous chances. Right now the Comets SOG have mostly been easy saves just like on the 5-game home stand. Every goalie becomes a world beater.

Rocket hits again. 3-0 11;15

Got something else to do? This is likely not going to get much better. Cull has done nothing to fix the team's defensive woes. Thye took a lot of time after practice the other day to practice 1 on1s in small space. Doesn't seem to have had any influence.
Sautner was never a good D-man. Subban was never a good D-man. Brisebois is a rookie and often looks like it. Chatfield has been fine until the pressure is applied in a 5-man zone possession attack and then he becomes a rookie as well. Holm has problems in the same situations. Sifers is maybe not quite the Huskins veteran type presence the Comets were hoping for. This is where McEneny caves in as well. It's not a case of first pass or creating a breakout. They can't ever get possession of the puck and go into desperation mode trying to block shots, tie up any wrong colored Jersey, mindless play. They are flat out not able to handle the speed of a strong puck moving possession attack like Charlotte showed and from Laval's past history as St. John's they attack in similar fashion. So does Toronto, Rochester, and Syracuse. Binghamton has a much more patterned offense, but it still maintains puck possession in the offensive zone. Who the Hell doesn't??? That's what will make this season very long if he can't get a grip on this soon. You can't be successful being helter-kelter in your own zone or the other technique, just fade back allowing huge gaps in their own end and sit in a five man pack that prays.

Comets going to the PK.

LaBate for hooking. His skating is becoming a problem and these behind the player trying to catch up calls of tripping, slashing, and hooking are becoming very common. It was the Hamilton disease last season, but Wacey added to it with a consistent retaliation cheap shot epidemic. Joe is showing he can't keep up with the speed of the opponents.

Kill is successful.

But now they are whistled again. Darcy for slashing.

McCarron, breakaway and hits the post. How do you get a breakaway on the PP?
The rest of the period was constant PP pressure. Their PP is constant attack and the Comets are always on their heels. The Comets PP is slow methodical around the perimeter until someone takes a shot the keeper can see or they lose possession and it's cleared, or worst of all a breakaway against takes place. Where is the attack mode, speed, player movement, shots in close, rebounds, Point blasts, retrieval - set up - start all over again? Never a second to breathe, let alone rest.

I'm going to have to say I am not impressed with our new head coach at this time.

I also have to say it might not all be him because the talent level is really limited to a handful of players and they have gone quiet now also. Goldobin, Boucher, Archibald (hurt pretty bad), Rodin (not going yet and now he's ill), Chaput and Megna really not showing anything yet, LaBate joining Cassels on the free fall and Molino looks like them right now, Carcone, MacEwen, and D'Aoust trying to assert themselves into the pro game and they are in the background right now. Darcy and Woods are what they are.

I already went into the D above.

Demko looks like the real deal, but with the help he isn't getting his numbers are going to fall if the team doesn't get their defensive scheme down.

Laval just filling all the lanes and making the neutral zone a quagmire.

Cassels gave it away in the slot for 2 shots.

The Rocket score again while Zilch is talking about Sifers actually being from the Kansas City area rather than Stratford, Conn where he was born or some nonsense. The horn broke up his train of thought and then he had to try to recreate the goal that he wasn't actually watching.

4-1 Laval 3:45

EDIT: He never did go back to his story about Sifers. LOL

Seeing a pattern of 4-5 goals against as becoming the new norm.
5 of the last 8. That's not good at all and Demko hasn't been spared as it's happened to him in 2 of his last 3 starts.
