With his four points tonight, Rafferty is now second in scoring for AHL defencemen, just one point behind ...

Derrick Pouliot.

Rafferty was flying tonight, occasionally too risky but as is so often the case the net result is positive. During the summer I watched one of his university games from last season and the first thing that I noticed was that he was definitely a puck watcher. Good at it and anticipates a lot of plays but got caught occasionally looking at the puck in his own zone when he should've been paying more attention to his man. Same issue this season in the AHL; a little more attention to his guy is needed inside his own blue line. When all is said and done, 20 points and +11 in 25 games so at the least he is a quality AHLer. Has to clean up those defensive details and reduce overhandling of the puck to stick in the NHL.

Thought Juolevi was better than his box score line of -2 and 0 points. Did some good things out there, especially on the PK. To play in the NHL he needs to skate better and be more physical.

Lind needs to find two more skating gears to stick in the NHL and probability suggests that at age 21 there is only one more gear forthcoming from physiological improvement, but if he does find that second extra gear then he'll likely be able to stick around as a regular. If not, then will make plays in the AHL like Boucher scores goals and get called up occasionally. 20 points in 25 games this season compared to 17 in 51 last season.

Gadjovich is fairly good within about 12 feet of the opposition's goal crease thanks to strength, a decent pair of hands and an ability to work into the open passing lane. A lot of improvement is still needed in many other aspects.

Very roughly, how much time to Gadjovich miss tonight?

TJ Brennon was a AHL scoring machine but couldn’t crack any nhl team. It’s really hard to tell until they make the show

TJ Brennan is another shining example.

If he keeps playing D the way he has been lately, Rafferty may be another. Remember the points rung up by the AHL All-Star, Jordan Subban?

One of the best D-men to wear a Comets jersey, Bobby Sanguinetti, is yet another example.

Bailey rushes up the ice, nice drop pass to Jasek who hits the post but then cashes in the rebound. 1-0 Utica somewhat against the run of play.

Bailey made a nice play to Jasek for the Comets' goal, then made a poor play in his own zone that forced Jasek into a tripping penalty. DiPietro lets a rebound get away, former Comet McMaster follows up his own initial shot and goes roof to tie it at 1-1. First period now over.

Early in the 2nd, behind the Marlies' net it's Camper to Goldobin then out front to Perron who scores to give Utica the 2-1 lead as a few Marlies did not distinguish themselves with their defensive efforts.

Less than a minute later, Rafferty with a good zone entry passes to Boucher who finds Brisebois breaking in, he fires a strong wrist shot to make it 3-1.

Less than a minute after that one, Jasek steals the puck in the Marlies' zone, passes back to Goldobin near the blue line who returns it to Jasek, he scores his second goal of the game to make it 4-1 Utica.

Another good offensive play by Rafferty, finding Baertschi who is robbed by the goalie but Lind scores on the rebound. 5-1 Utica, they've scored four goals in a 2:37 span. Timeout Marlies.

How do you think listing the worst possible outcomes of a certain circumstance is meaningful or has any predictive value?

Marlies get a couple of power plays, cash in on the second one to cut the lead to 5-2. Seven minutes to go in the 2nd period.

Immediately after the 5-2 goal, Marlies' Mason Marchment takes a lead pass for a breakaway, his shot goes high but he collects the rebound and passed it to a teammate for a goal. Except that for some reason it is waved off and Marchment gets a bench minor "equipment" penalty??? Juolevi gets a penalty on the play too, so 4-on-4.

Marchment is only a few seconds out of the box when he punches Bancks in the face to put the Comets onto the PP. No shortage of thrills, excitement and strangeness in this period.

Gadjovich staples a Marlie into the boards; play goes on as Stevenson gets a good scoring chance as a result, then the Marlies get the puck, and then the Comets touch the puck and the official gives Stevenson a boarding penalty even though: a) it was Gadjovich who hit the Marlie and b) the Comets had puck possession for a couple of seconds and an excellent scoring chance without the ref blowing his whistle.

And on the resulting power play the Marlies score their 3rd PP goal of the game in the final two seconds of the period to cut the lead to 5-3. A wild 20 minutes.

Third period starts with a big fight between Stevenson and Ben Harpur, both guys landed a lot of punches but the bigger Harpur bloodied Stevenson. Harpur down the tunnel clutching his hand.
