A 1st and some prospect may be an overpay but the Avalanche would be wise to think about it if it gave them top lines that could compete for a Cup. With their blue line also pretty good, they have a contending team they can improve.
The Penguins made trades that people thought they lost but they have a few more Cups and they don't look bad trades. Contending teams don't care about value the same way, it is more important to improve the team during their contending.
