The Scorers' Contraction Draft
This is a draft of players who will contribute offensively POINTS, goals and/or assists, in the 2011-12 NHL regular season. Can you predict who will be the scorers? Show your stuff. Yes, this is biased toward forwards, though some defensemen are worth drafting in this game, and no goaltenders will be of any value. So be it. This is about predicting who'll get a lot of points! It doesn't matter if it was powerplay, shorthanded or overtime. However, shootout goals do not count. Any player is eligible, even unsigned 2011 draft picks if you have the gall to think they will be a significant point producer immediately, or KHL players if you think they'll be on an NHL team this fall. The NHL point totals for your squad will speak for itself.
Rules:
* 30 teams to start to draft a 12-man squad of scorers, one pick per round for 12 rounds. It'll be a snake draft, randomly ordered. There will be a 3-hour clock without any overnight freeze-breaks. A missed pick should simply be made up ASAP. Mistakenly drafting a guy already taken moves the clock to the next team, simply fix your mistake in a new post asap. Everybody is encouraged to send a shortlist to me or the next GM to draft AFTER you, to ensure a smooth flow.
* Draft has begun. If you can't make your time slot, simply send a shortlist to me or to the next GM on the clock.
* There will be no trades. This is about your drafting acumen. The only kind of trade will be wholesale trading of draft position before either team has made any picks (e.g., 3rd overall and 22nd overall decide to swap all their draft picks, in essence, just change draft position).
* Abandoned teams at any point in the draft simply fold (contracted, eliminated from draft record, yet their players are not available for drafting or add/drop); three outstanding missed picks automatically fold a team.
* 1 NHL goal = 1 game point; 1 NHL assist = 1 game point
* the top 16 squads in terms of points at the end of November continue
* the top 8 squads in terms of points at the end of December continue
* the top 4 squads in terms of points at the end of January continue
* the top two squads in terms of points at the end of February continue
* the top squad in terms of points at season's end is declared champion.
* there will be a 48-hour add/drop period immediately following the draft to make up any mulligans, to cover for any bad picks made during the draft. The ONLY other times that players may be added or dropped will be the monthly add/drop Saturdays.
* the monthly add/drop periods will be on the first Saturday of the month following the contraction (first one on Dec. 3rd) and that monthly draft will be clocked, each squad having time (an hour between 8am-midnight eastern time on Dec 3rd, two hours per team the first Sat. in Jan.), in reverse order based on accumulated points as of the end of the preceding month (e.g., the squad 16th in points at end of November will get first crack at add/drop, making 0 to 2 additions, the 15th in points gets second crack to make up to two changes, etc.). If you can't make your window, simply PM me a list and it will be used. There are no add/drops at any other time: if you draft an injury-prone player or simply have bad luck, well, that's the risk a squad faces!

Remember: Don't bother drafting goalies. Go for the players who get the most points!! That's the point of this draft (re-read the rules to be clear). Any bad picks made during the draft can be re-done after the draft during the 48-hour postdraft add/drop period. Watch out for injuries too! A guy injured through October isn't going to help your squad much get the points it needs to be a top-16 squad by the end of November. You draft him, he's yours! Make dumb picks and watch your squad get contracted early.
RULE: Every single bad pick counts from the end of round 1 onwards. If you draft a broken leg you can wait until after the draft to re-pick during add/drop or else just let your team be contracted. The only exception to this is if the boo-boo is a goalie or non-NHLer taken when one is sick, then a re-pick is allowed within 24 hours of the original boo-boo pick.
