It's the Canes. It's impossible.

Well, 6 of their last 11 are at home (where they are 21-10-4) and 6 are against non playoff teams (Detroit twice, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Dallas, NYI). If they continue their strong play (5-0-3 last 8 games) and go something like 8-3, that gives them 91 points. If Boston only goes 4-6 in their last 10, the Hurricanes will have passed them (which is totally possible, they have a pretty tough schedule). Its much more likely than I would have thought.

We'll be looking reel stoopid with these avatars of ours if that hypothetical perfectly impossible thing was ever to happen, at least.

LOL, you think the Canes are going to finish 5-0-3?

Let me tell you something about the Carolina Hurricanes...

what a tragedy that would be

we would have to keep them for the playoff run, naturally

Yes. What a hypothetical windfall it would be for us, though, because our playoffs avatar business would be already dealt with.

We're a JMCC franchise, not a 503 one.

No, he said you had gone 5-0-3 in your last 8. Is that true?

He then projected that if you go 8-3, you would end up with 91 points, which could be enough, theoretically.

It would be a massive inconvenience for everyone on this board, obviously. Hopefully Carolina doesn't selfishly complicate things that way.

Well, I'll go on record as saying that if the Canes do make the playoffs, and then do play the Sharks (who drafted me) I will bring my metal shark to the games in Raleigh.

Got to honor the process, as it were.

Not that we'd have anybody to do them. We haven't even had a proper GDT in...how many years now?

You would think f=26 would be a pulsating nest of fresh ideas and vigor after having sent everyone around the HF for the post-season year after year to learn all the winning practices. :sarcasm:

Oh, I misread. Either way, this team ain't going 13-3-3 to finish the season and then somehow make it with 91 points. That would be beyond miraculous in the context of the bigger picture here.

True, but is that the gambler's fallacy at play? They've already gone 5-0-3. That part is done. Going 8-3 isn't terribly unreasonable.

I say they do it just to **** everyone off.

Sports Club Stats gives us a 4.4% chance of making the playoffs. We have a better chance of finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference than we do of making it to that last wild card spot. I know hope springs eternal, but this team making the playoffs isn't happening.

If a pilot told you your airplane had a 4.4% chance of failing, would you feel safe?

I don't think 4.4% is an accurate number. They arrive at it by crunching a bunch of data about winning odds, but you're talking to fans who know the team very well. There's like one guy on the Canes board who still thinks we can make it, and he's been pretty open that it's more of a "never say die" principle than a real expectation.

Knowing this team, they'll somehow come almost all the way back, wind up in a "win and you're in" scenario, and get demolished.

I would tend to agree with you, but the fabric of this team is significantly different than in past disappointing years.

+ Added Aho, Teravainen, Ryan, and Stempniak
+ Emergence of Slavin and Pesce
+ Maturation of guys like Lindholm, Rask, and Skinner
+ No Eric Staal

Another thing that might help is that Ward has looked like a decent goaltender for stretches of this season.

This is a very different Hurricanes team then we've seen blow it in the past, and they are (statistically) a bit due for continued regression - they've got by far the lowest PDO over the past 2 seasons despite this latest stretch. It also helps they are playing their best hockey of the year right now. If they could just win a damn game after regulation.

Except in this case the pilot's telling us we have a 4.4% chance of successfully getting into the air and not leaving us in a heap of burning wreckage on the runway. I'll walk, thanks. Especially when, as Tarheel pointed out, I know the proclivities of this particular aircraft and buddy, she's a widow maker.
