Sports betting is currently legal in Rhode Island and the state has now approved the use of mobile apps to let people who ARE PHYSICALLY in the state to bet on games including updated props during a game.

Xfinity has developed software to allow instant sports betting using the X1 box which they have licensed to Cox Cable in Rhode Island ( Contour ) and the system is being tested on several cable systems in New Jersey and Pennslyvania.

NESN envisions using the ticker to display real-time odds during a game. :help:

NESN currently supplies Rhode Island cable companies with a separate feed for all Red Sox and Bruins games and viewers there get to see the NBC 10 Rhode Island weather forecast instead of the Boston 25 one seen in Eastern Mass and Southern NH.

Sports betting is coming to Massachusetts and now that the mega-casino in Everett has been cleared to open it won't be long.

Charlie Jacobs wants to be allowed to have a betting kiosk INSIDE TD Garden next season and it is expected that Encore Boston, MGM Springfield, Plainridge, Draft Kings and the Massachusetts Lottery will be offering mobile apps. The idea that you might see betting props displayed on the advertising ribbons at TD Garden is not fantasy.

Like it or not, this is the future as nobody can deny it will be an enormous source of revenue.

My parents always talked about how much the world has changed.

I’m starting to feel like them.

Amen

The reality is while many reading this thread will be offended, many others will be pleased.

Wynn has spent $2.6 BILLION on that monstrosity in Everett and they will recoup that investment.

I guess if it's used for something that's more modern than mid 90's technology (i.e. checking scores) then it'll serve some use. NESN still teases their sports shows with crap like "Did the Sox do well in fillintheblank today? Tune in later on Sports Yak Crappy Show to find out!!"

I'm sure they'll also run little ads on the ticker as a "public service" like this:

I believe we’ll have an entire media brand(TV station dedicated 100%, radio, website, etc) to sports gambling ala CNBC, Bloomberg, Fox Business is to the stock market sooner than we think.

They are making it so easy for people to blow their mortgage money gambling. Predicting gambling becomes America's biggest epidemic in ten years.

It will also be a hot button topic for political candidates to take stances on.

Also, not a fan of this supposed ticker being able to be targeted at kids.

Kids watch sports on NESN, now they'll have gambling ads aimed at them. Awesome.

The only thing bigger than gambling on real sports will be gambling on E-Sports IMO.

As someone who works in the gambling industry, one of the number one concerns for any e-gambling venture is keeping it out of the hands/eyes/minds of minors. As a software person, I can't think of a way that TV based voice gambling can be put out to the masses without exposing it to minors. Also problematic is keeping minors from participating.

Trust me, there are anti-gambling groups out there waiting to pounce on this subject. Within seconds of this hitting the streets, I guarantee there will be a video of an 8 year old betting on Bruins games heading to the legislature. Xfinity/NESN has some pretty big hurdles to overcome before they can assure those videos don't happen.

I don't know if I see that happening. I'd think most people who want to sports gamble already do, despite the legality. I know plenty of people that use private bookies in states where bets can't be placed legally. Legalizing sports gambling is very similar to the legalization of marijuana in the sense that its something thats already widespread, so the states might as well take advantage of the potential tax revenue.

Being someone who sees the negative impacts of gambling, I'm not a fan of gambling, especially when it may have an impact on kids and the ignorant. Thing is it's so prevalent nowadays all over the place. I wish the access to sports gambling would be curtailed but the opposite is happening. Almighty dollar wins out in this system. Quality of life and people's well being, not so much. Btw, I'm cool with people who have the means to gamble, and know when to stop. There should be access to gamble legally for those folks. Just don't like the idea of yet another way to push and promote gambling to the ignorant and the young.

A state could demand that an adult sets up the account in person but then?

Mobile apps are the gold mine and having a TV remote do the same thing is a logical progression as obviously the location of a cable box being in state is easy to prove.

There are way more people that don't do pot or gamble. To serve both up on a silver platter, being able to get/do both with ease is absolutely insane, but both will bring mega bucks in so they are all for it. A lot of people didn't do that stuff because it wasn't the easiest thing to do or get.

It's a logical progression, but the big pockets of US based media companies are not going to go unnoticed by the anti-gambling establishment. App makers can shelter themselves by setting up entities in gambling friendly locations, but Xfinity/NESN cannot, and will be targeted. It's something I'm going through in my own industry as e-gambling is being sussed out.

There will also be a time in the next ten years where you will have tablets on the seat in front of you where you can bet live in game. Who wins the next faceoff...next hit...next shot on goal...Prop bets are going through the roof right now...Imagine all those drunks with the ability to gamble as well that easy? Going to be a disaster.
