Ottawa doing Ottawa things

I hope one of those things is repeatedly turning down building permit applications for a new rink in Kanata.

Why would EM even bring it up if it’s admittedly just « blue sky »?

he has to be insane. #1 complaint about the team is the arena location. But maybe he’s betting big, we know he’s not afraid to gamble

He probably just wants to diversify his assets like most wealthy people do and sees an opportunity to add real estate and a casino as part of the new arena deal.

And he’s probably getting tired of the red tape and time the NCC puts up.

I would not be at all surprised to see this happen. I don’t support it but I understand it.

Arena building costs have skyrocketed, and are double what they used to be a decade ago. The longer this drags out the more it will cost everyone.

From a bleak perspective:

Has the pandemic changed the way we view sports and entertainment?

Will bars, restaurants and clubs ever be the same? Will new arenas that get built still have 15,000+ capacity seating, or will it be reduced to >10,000 for the future?

I guess my point is, in a few years time, will " a downtown arena" matter the way it used to?

Behind you, look out
The arena is fine (minus the fact its cold water in the washrooms) It it the location that is the problem. (for people of Ottawa, since I drive in from Kingston it doesnt affect me)

Asked to clarify whether the new Kanata arena was simply a “blue sky” idea without any real meat on the bones, a spokesman for the team wrote Friday:
“Yes, it’s just ‘blue sky’ at this point as there are no plans in the works to build an arena anywhere, especially at LeBreton, as that’s in the courts. If plans start being made down the road, we will certainly let you know.”

I bet they are not saying anything now for legal reasons, as stated above.

It surely is still on the table to build at Lebreton. This whole developer court case needs to be resolved first... otherwise they would put their new plan at risk.... as well as the risk of losing the cash that Eugene believes he will be winning from the case.

Sign me up! This owner has never misled anyone before! lmao
who would believe a single sentence out his mouth? Liars and cheats going to lie and cheat.

also, good thing the team can break even at 6,000 in the stands. I know how concerned some people were that this owner was losing oceans of cash and going to have to relocate the team. Thank goodness we can put that lie to rest, just take the owners word for it.

It isn’t a lie and no one is cheating - we all know he can easily support a real payroll of $40m+ off your suggested revenue calculation ... I think the issue with most people relates to them wishing he spend more on payroll than revenue supports. We get what we Pay for.

Trying to come up with a way to make a big splash the top selection, Melnyk was noodling over ideas with his girlfriend, Shari Anderson, an Ottawa native, when they brainstormed the though of having Trebek make the pick.
“We were just thinking about what can we do to make it a little different because we were wondering what to do with those two picks (at No. 3 and No. 5. This draft was always planned to be a game-changer,” Melnyk said. “We wanted to do something special. Originally, we were going to hold a big party at the CTC with a free concert and all the elaborate elements that make for a great party at the rink.

MELNYK:

Kuddos to Melnyk and his GF for coming up with the idea.

RIP Trebek.
