The disgraceful oversight of Nick Backstrom

Backstrom is good but this is nearly meaningless when half his assists are from the power play where ovechkin is one of the best power play shooters of all time.

Sorry, but this is stupid. Everyone knows the pass to Ovechkin is coming yet Backstrom is still able to consistently make it happen. The PP runs through Backstrom. If anything, Ovechkin benefits from him as much as the other way around.

Sounds like a lot of handwaving to fit a narrative. Ovechkin has been a 50 goal scorer without him and is one of the best power play goalscorers ever. If Backstrom were elite he would be able to produce at elite levels at ES but its severely imbalanced to the power play. Without ovechkin a disproportionate number of his points go poof. Facts.

As much as I love Ovechkin, I love Nicky more. He's still underrated as evidenced by people still thinking he's a product of Ovechkin. Come on and win the Ross Nick.

86 of his 520 career assists come from goals scored by Alex Ovechkin on the powerplay.

That is 16.5% of his total assists.

If one subtracts all of Ovechkin's powerplay goals from the equation, Backstrom still would have 434 assists in 708 games, or 0.613 assists per game. That would slot him comfortably in 8th place on that list, just underneath Patrick Kane.

Backstrom assists on an Ovechkin powerplay goal at a rate of once every 8.23 games, or approximately 10 times per season. Of course, it takes some work on the part of Backstrom as well to create the opportunities for Ovechkin to score in those situations.

If we halved the number of Ovechkin powerplay goals that he assisted on -- let's say, for example, throughout his career he only assisted on 43 of Ovechkin's powerplay goals, or played with someone half as proficient as Ovechkin is on the powerplay -- he would be in 5th place on the list, just beneath Jaromir Jagr, with an average of 0.673 assists per game.

Right now, Nicklas Backstrom is tied for second in NHL scoring with 60 points in 56 games; he is one point behind Connor McDavid. So far in 2016-17, he has assisted on only 13 of Alex Ovechkin's goals. He currently has 43 total assists, tied with McDavid for the league lead.

This season, Backstrom has scored at a rate of 2.54 assists per 60 minutes. McDavid has scored at a rate of 2.17 assists per 60 minutes.

Sidney Crosby, meanwhile, has only scored at a rate of 1.92 assists per 60 minutes this season; Evgeni Malkin: 2.21 assists per 60 minutes.

While it's appreciated that you keep reminding everyone that Toews can't stack up against top players on his own, I think everyone knows it already.

He is a very good passer. I have nothing against him. Playing your whole career on a pp1 with ovechkin is an extremely special situation that would boost anyones scoring. And not by a little.

So why have Ovechkin struggle so much internationally when he has played with Malkin etc, while, Backstrom has been playing in the same way internationally as he has in NHL, and he usually hasnt play there with any forward of Malkins caliber. So it is much easier to make a case for that Ovechkin needs Backstrom than the other way around.

Crosby plays with good players in PP also, never hear that being use against him etc. Most players that play in PP1 play with other elite players in PP.

It is funny that this season when he hasnt play nearly as much with Ovechkin in 5v5, he produce more in 5v5.

But i agree that where Bäckström really shines is in PP, but it has nothing to do with Ovechkin. It probably has to do with that Backstrom has probably the best hockey iq in the world, but lacks speed etc, which he do not need in the same way in PP. He is probably the best PP player in the world, but lacks little bit in 5v5.

Also, that is only assuming Ovechkin's replacement misses every one of those shots, which is far from the true obviously. It's not like every single Ovechkin goal is some impossible feat only he could pull off - the average NHL winger still scores on 43 of those passes.

Bäckström do not need to apologize for his points just because he happens to play with Ovechkin. Its a team sport, and everyone benefit from having competent linemates, not just Bäckis.
