The best backhand shots I ever saw came from Maurice Richard, playing right wing with a left-hand shot. He also had a fine wrist shot from his forehand, of course.

If I recall correctly, his last goal, against the Leafs in the 1960 Stanley Cup finals, came when he circled round the back of the net, picked up a loose puck in front and fired it in off his backhand.

I use a very small curve (Malkin) because of this. Having a good backhand gives you secondary options.



The minute he started skating backwards, the defenseman was beat.

Don't most righthanded people shoot left and vice-versa? Or has that changed since when I played (the 1960s!)

In Europe I think this is more true than in North America. In North America the percentage of righty shooters is much higher than the percentage of left handed people, while in europe the difference between the two numbers is much smaller.
