Will Darryl Sutter be able to pick his own assistant coaches or will the team just keep the ones they have?
No one here would actually know. All we can do is speculate and I would speculate that...
  • Ryan Huska (Assistant) is safe, he seems to be the heir apparent.
  • Martin Gelinas (Assistant) is safe-idh, could be moved to a different role, he was dir. of player development in Nashville before he rejoined the Flames IIRC.
  • Ray Edwards (Assistant) is safe-ish, could be moved back to his previous or a new role, he was dir. of player development before Ward replaced Peters.
  • Jordan Sigalet (Dir. of Goaltending) is safe, they literally just created a new position for him to oversee the organizations goaltenders with some scouting duties involved.
  • Jason Labarbera (Goalie Coach, is safe-ish, he was just plucked from the Hitmen and I think it'd be poor optics to punt him after 1 season. However if Ian Clarke is available and wants to come here, maybe Labarbera gets moved to the AHL or becomes a goaltending specific scout?
  • Jamie Pringle (Video) is safe, IIRC he was initially a Sutter hire and working with Chris Snow, they've basically developed our video system from scratch.
  • Ryan van Asten (Strength & Conditioning) is safe, he's one of the very best in the league and a huge reason why we're always near the bottom of the league in man games lost to injury.

The strength and conditioning guy should be fired. Team is at the bottom of the league in term of conditioning. Run out of gas most games. Even Sutter said so. Injuries are mostly a fluke, even that why is Monahan injured all the time if you give the coach the credit ?

The goaltending coaches continue to be a joke of the league, they turned a Vezina caliber goalie into below average. Want to make these guys your scout? All the sudden they know what a goaltender is supposed to look like? Lol.

Ryan Huska is the heir apparent? For what?

Stop rewarding incompetence or become another Oilers.

They should all be dismissed as none of them have shown why they're above replacing

They should allow Sutter to pick his own assistance as well.
Guys want their own team around them, not the bastards of bastards.

Sutter is already going above van Asten's head and assigning dates for when individual players should start training in the summer. The entire coaching staff outside of Sutter is the epitome of the "What would you say you do here?" Office Space meme

Getting rid of Huska would be a godsend. Let some other franchise fall for the mistaken hype.

And lol at giving Ryan van Asten credit for mitigating injures when in reality, Flames players just play injured all the time because ownership/management have created a culture where that's encouraged, probably to save costs.

When Sutter signed here he gave Huska a favourable endorsement. We will see if that was lip service or not.

I think some real questions need to asked about how our defense was run before Sutter got here. Why was Hanifin receiving 0 pp and pk time? Who's decision was that, if it was Ward's call then I think Huska gets a pass but if it was Huska who made that call than we have to ask wtf was going on. Hanifin is to good to not pk and our pp is in desperate need for some help from the backend, if we don't trust Kylington or Valimaki on the top unit then it needs to be Hanifin that is given a chance.

Huska did alright with the Heat and knows the younger players and the system, I think that could buy him another year under Sutter and that experience could bring him along way... hard to fault him if he was following instruction from Ward / Peters. Sigalet should have been fired long ago.

Kirk Muller is a great hockey mind. Great add.

Cail did a really good job with the players he was given IMO. They were really young in comparison with other AHL teams.
