The annual Canadian Christmas holiday begins in less than a month, on Dec. 26th and runs through January 5th. Buffalo may have a number of participants depending on the selection camps upcoming soon.

Potential players:

Sweden - Rosen and Ostlund
Canada - Savoie
Czechia - Kulich
Finland - Leinonen, Marjala (yes, he's still just 19 until the end of February)

Link to the IIHF website for the tournament - IIHF - Tournaments

Player rosters haven't been named. The above are possible participants.

Notable cuts

Matthew Savoie, C, Buffalo and Conor Geekie, C, Arizona: I’m discussing these two players together since they are on the same WHL team in Winnipeg and were picked in roughly the same part of the 2022 NHL Draft. Winnipeg has been one of the best teams in the CHL this season, and they are both important parts of that team.

That said, neither Geekie nor Savoie have really lit up the scoresheets consistently. They’ve both played well enough. I’ve liked Savoie more personally in my viewings due to his speed and effort, but as offensive-minded players, it’s hard to bring them into Team Canada on a top-three line given they haven’t scored at a high rate with their club teams.

Savoie’s cut is also interesting given his track record with Hockey Canada. He was brought into the U17 challenge as a 15-year-old and was a top player there. He was the captain of his U16 team. He applied for WHL exceptional status and has been a top scorer throughout his junior career. He’s still a very good prospect but this first half for him has been an unexpected twist in his development.

Finns name their team and the last Sabre darkhorse - Viljami Marjala - does not make the cut despite his junior stat-line in Finland (21 GP, 14-24-38). The Finns were stocked on the wing and he just wasn't good enough/well-regarded enough to dislodge the rest.

Not surprising considering Halttunen didn't make it and he's supposedly their top up and coming wing

WJHC lost some shine over the last few years for me

I'm more excited seeing Ostlund, Rosen and Kulich being show cased

Kulich not in the Czech lineup for tonight's tuneup game against Latvia. Doesn't sound like it is injury/illness, just looking at other guys.

Sweden-USA tuneup game.

1st period:
Ostlund with 2nd assist on 1st SWE goal, also looked good in 4-on-4 situation. Rosen with some nice work on early SWE PP, walking a defender and taking the puck low for a cross-crease feed (flubbed on).

2nd period:
Ostlund caught on ice for USA 2nd goal after getting the puck to #9 behind the net, who then gave it away up the wall like a young Fitz. Rosen loses a battle deep that gets turned back up the other side for a 2-on-1 USA SHG. Ostlund draws an interference penalty at the end of it for another PP, and has 2 terrific zone entries on the back half of it. He's got it on a string, gains the blue at will even 5-on-5.

3rd period:
Ostlund takes a penalty, although that Yank dropped like a sack to draw it. Didn't look like much more than body positioning on replay. USA cashes it, 5-1 Snuggerud. Rosen covers responsibly as aforementioned Swedish Fitz goes on a tour of the O zone. Ostlund/Ohgren get the 4-on-4 nod again, Ostlund very nearly pulled one away from Hughes at the blue line.

Random thoughts:
USA just skated the Swedes through the ice for most of it.
Lysell actually made a couple of passes. Not too many, just a few early on to let you know he could if he wanted to.
Rosen's line really only has one play, Lysell on the give-and-gone. You give him the puck, you're not likely to see it again.
Sandy Pelican is a cool name.
Gauthier is a bit of a criminal element, which makes sense on who drafted him.
USA has some depth. Hughes, Cooley, Lucius, Snuggerud standing out as expected.

Canada seems to be toying with the Slovaks tonight in pre-tournament action. As usual, they are stocked.

Wright ends his own team's shutout bid by accidently firing the puck off his own tender and in. Well, that'll be a topic of conversation, I'm sure.
