So if Dallas is willing to move the 3OA because their winning window is now, can we afford it? They could do it for a goalie ( Cory Schneider for the 3OA ) and I'd absolutely trade Varly for it but after missing an entire season the value is probably not there unfortunately.

How else could we get that pick? The good news is we now have cap room to spare so we can take one of their overpaid goalie back in a trade. That alone is probably worth a chunk of that 3rd OA pick.

Having #3 and #4 would likely mean Hieskanen + one of Mittelstadt/Vilardi/Glass, which would be awesome.

Would do that without hesitation, but there's no way Varly is worth a 3rd overall pick. Schneider is a top-5 goalie in the league, and actually stays healthy.

But could it help if we take Niemi as a cap dump or how much would we still need to add?

I mean, you'd have to ask a Dallas fan, but I would think you'd have to add quite a bit. I'd offer Varlamov + JCB + 2nd. Even then, still not sure they do it.

If Sakic could somehow pull that off, I'd forgive him for this season. Heiskanen + Villardi would be huge going forward.

Varlamov wouldn't return a second round pick right now. He wouldn't be the best, probably not even the second best piece, in a package to acquire the third overall pick.

Unfortunately this is probably true. Until he can show that he can perform at that high level again, and show that he can be somewhat healthy, his value will be low.

As for this draft...I want Vilardi so bad. It'd be nice to have a Getzlaf/Benn/Stone type player...not that he is guaranteed to be at that level at all, but it's nice to dream.

And there's more:

On the surface, Heiskanen seems like the obvious and safe choice. However, I don’t expect Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill to do the obvious or safe thing here

3 Reasons Stars Should Trade 3rd Overall Pick

TL;DR
1) Hiring Hitchcock is a win-now move
2) Aging players (Spezza, Sharp, Hemsky) means win now
3) 3rd OA wont help them this year, they need immediate help at D and G

Also, they have plenty of youth in the pipleline for the "after".

Stars do appear to be a win now team so it makes sense to try and get help right away. By the time whoever they pick starts making an impact, Benn will be in his 30's and Seguin will be looking for $9M+ or he'll be on another team. They'll also need good cheap talent because of some of those contracts though so I can see the other side of it as well.

The thing I'd be more interested in doing is moving down in the draft.

Now that we're assuredly not in the Top 2 and wont get the Patrick/Hischier combo, if Dallas takes Heiskanen at #3 I would be looking to move that #4 pick down a few spots and pick up another 2nd rounder or something instead.

The team I'd be looking at is Arizona. They have that extra 1st from Minny already. If Arizona has a guy they really like from that "2nd tier" in this draft, I would be happy to move the #4 + a small piece to Arizona for #7 + #20. Gives us the opportunity to still get a good player from the 2nd tier(Potentially one of Glass, Mittelstadt, Pettersson, Makar, Liljegren, etc.) but also gives us another useful pick later on in the 1st round. Not to mention another potential 1st round pick in a Duchene trade.

I know a lot of people think this draft is weak, but IMO it's only weak at the very top and the depth of the draft is still pretty decent.

So lame that we've gone from trading the 1st overall pick to gain assets and draft Heiskanen, to having to give up assets to move up and get him.

I just hope that the top 3 picks are all forwards so it can finally force the Avs to take a D man with the top pick and develop him.

Between Patrick, Hischier, Vilardi, Mittelstadt and Glass; there's enough forwards for the organization to pass on Heiskanen if they want to.

Patrick and Hischier yes, Mittelstadt I can see the Avs loving him.
Glass and Vilardi... no reason they should be chosen over a D man.

If they're not sold on Heiskanen, then I'd rather they take Vilardi or Glass than any of the other dmen in this draft.

I don't think there's necessarily a force there. I want Heiskanen personally, but there are forwards in that same tier that I wouldn't be mad about leaving the draft with. As long as they don't reach for Rasmussen there (I like him, but not at 4) or something crazy like that.

I know hindsight's always 20/20 and all of that, but I still can't believe we traded a 3rd for Eric Gelinas

For some reason I thought it was a 4th, which was bad enough... 3rd is even worse.
