Ted Leonsis: We will do everything to help Ovi to beat Gretzky's goals record

I say as long as he's still putting up good numbers and helping his team win, all good. The season though he just sticks around for 10-15 goals per season just to break the record is when it becomes a bit meaningless. Gretzky may have scored only 9 goals his final season, but didn't he still lead the lowly Rangers in points at age 38?

OV will be well over 1600 games barring no injuries in 5 years. At some point it gets rather embarrassing trying to chase a record when you play 120 so games more then the guy your chasing.

It will be fun though. Remember * people think it will be easy for OV. It won't be. As he inches closer the grip gets tighter, the body gets slower. The pressure gets amped up. Can a 40 plus year old OV get it done ?
10 years ago the record was considered unbreakable, now it’s embarrassing to break it if it takes too long? Come on now

It won't be embarrassing unless Ovechkin's play becomes an embarrassment, and I'm sure he will stop if that moment comes.
Also, to be honest, "embarrassing" is a word that often comes to mind when watching the 80s NHL players Gretzky put his stats against, so they are kinda even ;)

I once believed Ovie would do it. I'm not so sure anymore, but it's nice to know that he's going to be given the chance. Dude's going to have to age like Jagr.

Ovechkin is the Patrick Marleau of goal scorers. And his comparable would be Brett Hull, not Wayne Gretzky.

Oh yeah so embarassing

As opposed to detain the record by virtue of playing in a higher scoring league? Adjusting for era, Howe, Jagr and Ovechkin have higher goals than Gretzky already...

For the record I'm not talking about points total, because there there's no one even close to Gretzky!

Maybe it'd be better if they played for wins and cups instead of trying to help Ovechkin break some completely meaningless record.

Just because the media attention is what it is and people talk openly about how cool it would be, that doesn't mean the guys inside that locker room are like "today the plan is to get Ovechkin goals, screw the 2 points".

Ovechkin has been breaking records for years, the media made him the center of attention for years, his teammates have been answering questions about his accomplishments for years, it's nothing new.

It's embarassing to have the most goals of all time? Was it embarassing that Gretzky played in such a high scoring era?

How many other players have gotten close to the record or played that many games and haven't come close?

They know their days as any sort of contender are done, they know they can't start any real rebuilding because of the contracts, so go all in on fan service.

What are you guys talking about that it was "embarrassing" for Gretzky to play in a higher scoring era?
Sure he did, but he still destroyed his competition in that era. A prime Gretzky today would destroy the league today as well.

Get a grip. You’d be one of the first people to acknowledge that McDavid is better than a guy like Yzerman, because raw point totals don’t tell the whole story when looking at vastly different scoring levels between eras.

Those people are referring to a poster stating that it would be embarrassing if Ovechkin had to play 120 more games than Gretzky to break the record.

It’s satirical because it’s very blatantly ignoring the very large difference in goal scoring levels across both eras. Ie. 730 goals in Ovi’s era is already objectively harder and better on a relative basis than 894 in Gretzkys era.

Nah, not really given all gretzkys high goal scoring seasons came right after massive expansion when league scoring was off the rails in the 80s

I can agree to that, but this era is far better scoring than the dead puck era that Gretzky ended his career in. Scoring is only increasing now as well.
