Genuine question, what happens if the Leafs have to match a huge offer sheet for Marner, could teams then not also offer sheet Matthews and put the Leafs in a bind?

Wouldn’t be the first time a team tried something like that. The Sharks did it with Hjalmarsson and Niemi (although Niemi was a UFA)

So Marner and his agent know teams want to offersheet him 11m+. I can't see him settling for the 9.5m Kucherov comparable.
This is probably why they want to get Matthews locked in first, and as close to 11m as possible.

I think it's going to be 11.5m for Matthews (5 years) and 10.5m for Marner (8 years)

the funniest part of the offer sheet talk is the fact that Tampa is unanimously considered to be a much better team than the Leafs, have a player in Point that is having a similar season to Marner, and Tampa is also in some cap trouble, and yet you hear absolutely 0 about him (or any other RFAs outside the Leafs) getting offersheets. This is a narrative that was entirely driven by people who don't like the Leafs hoping something bad will happen to them after they signed Tavares, and then picked up by the Leafs-obsessed media who overblow everything so they have stuff to talk about, and now people are acting like something that never happens is likely to happen. Comical.

They could, but teams are professional. They are not out to get the Leafs.

This thread would be locked if the topic was about a player for any other team than the Leafs, and the player came out when ask the question as to whether he would accept the offer sheet and he responded with "Definitely Not." (which negates the threads relevance) Instead we let a second part to the thread start.

Yeah, a lot of people need to learn to tuck it in their waistband.

How does it negate the threads relevance?

This is the NHL not the NBA, guys don’t talk to the media about potentially switching teams or signing offer sheets, just doesn’t happen.

HF Boards needs to know who drives their traffic.
