it was 2014. before he was even drafted, and he's now entering his seven pro season. they won't let it go, and they won't tell the truth about what he said (if they've even bothered to research what he actually said to begin with). if i were tony or his agent i'd get out aggressively in front of this instead of letting people like sara civian control the narrative.
You can't "control the narrative" because the only people it matters to are the ones you will never satisfy. The rest of us are LOLing at it.

It’s truly amazing. TDA, in their eyes, has to meet with and apologize to LGBTQ POC (I may be missing some, sorry) because …. They constantly call him racist and homophobic.
And yet….he hasn’t said anything on these subjects. Nothing. Not one thing.

F these people. Seriously. They are the epitome of disingenuous.

His Tweeter account helped build and foster the disdain beyond his past issues. He would post, like/retweet and often delete after the firestorm - either voluntarily or at the urging of his employer. He was an active participant in his current image situation on multiple fronts.

He's still on Instagram. He'll probably keep his nose clean for a while. But, 2022 is an election year so that's where I could see him landing in hot water again if it happens.

I don’t personally follow this guy on Twitter, but I came across this thread today, pretty interesting Waddell would reach out personally to a STM:

A little background - Doug Abrams has been a Canes fan for a long time. He's verbose and often outspoken. He's also an unabashed liberal.

Most importantly, in this context, he's a very large financial supporter of the Hurricanes. He owned something like 4 or 5 STMs, His law firm advertised with the Canes. And, I believe, that firm had a skybox (or whatever PNC calls them). He publicly threatened and actually said he did cancel all of that support.

He was outraged on Twitter about the signing and spoke his mind. As that type of long-time supporter of the organization, it would be professional malpractice for the front office not to reach out to him for a chat.

The Hurricanes established a Leadership award for someone who died driving drunk. Dany Heatley killed a teammate in another accident involving alcohol but was cheered by OTT fans (until he asked for a trade). Craig MacTavish killed a woman in a DUI and is revered as one of the top coaches in EDM history. Mike Danton went to prison for conspiracy to commit murder, then went to Sweden upon his release and was named team captain. Patrick Kane beat a cabbie up for 20 cents, and is a hero in Chicago.

We could take solace that the incidents like these in hockey trail other sports significantly. Fans hold NHL players to a high code of behavior, and generally, they oblige. But sometimes people do stupid things. TDA did something stupid. But he didn't kill, maim, physically injure anyone.

Is it possible he is truly interested in showing he can change? Absolutely. Is there a risk he will do or say something stupid in the future? Sure. But no one knows until it happens (or doesn't). I'm all for giving TDA and the Canes a chance to prove everyone wrong, but also know enough to understand the difference between a TDA "relapse" will still be 100% on TDA - the Canes aren't enabling his past behavior, they aren't condoning it, but also aren't just letting to go, I don't believe. But TDA's future is up to TDA. Canes might be guilty of a questionable decision, and that's what they will have to deal with, but that's it. Hoping it works out for everyone - TDA, Canes, Caniacs, NHL, NHL fans, everyone.

He also, after one conversation, said he re-upped his season tickets after initially canceling.

The latest from one hour back is a somewhat different take, and political as hell.

One last thought on that note: the way the Canes have gone about this so far, it feels like the ideas are coming from a bunch of old guys in the executive suite. The generic statements, the sit-down with a benign influencer, the way TDA hasn’t been mentioned in any of their communications. That all has a distinctly 20th century media vibe to it. Perhaps next they’ll send us all a prerecorded voicemail from Canes head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

People see through this corporate-communications fluff in 2021. This is the moment when you really need talented people who can design a strong crisis-management strategy, and communications pros who know their craft. This is an age of social media and social activism, when people are expecting a substantial, action-based response which is tailored to groups who are most impacted by the issue. Attempts to soft-pedal the issue end up making it worse.

It’s a really difficult, nuanced challenge and not something that a bunch of sports-management guys are going to be able to handle. It says a lot when a crisis like this just happens to coincide with Help Wanted ads for the communications and community relations teams.

@tarheelhockey

we’ll just disagree on it, which is fine as it’s not that big of a deal to me.

I do agree wholeheartedly with this statement of yours:

“If TDA keeps his nose clean, and especially if he has a good season on the ice, that pushback will dwindle to near-zero because the vast majority of the fanbase has far more of a personal stake in his performance than in his social behavior.”
