Tavares/Marner/Hyman - Series Role

I see a lot of people bashing these guys for not producing offensively but they are being used as a DEFENSIVE line this series and they are doing their job. That is the reason Pastrnak was moved to a different line.

The main problem for them the past few games is that Tavares is getting eaten alive in the faceoff circle so they are always playing without possession. Bergeron is 73% on faceoffs over the last 3 games!!! These guys aren't going to generate much offense when they never start with the puck. Tavares, especially, is starting to look gassed and Hyman is definitely playing banged up and isn't able to battle as hard.

With that said the line is doing their job as 5on5 the Bergeron line hasn't scored much at all. Their damage has been mostly done on the Power Play.

The Tavares line hasn't been productive, but understanding they've been put into an attrition role to cancel out Bergeron which is a necessary evil. I wonder if we need to take Marner off the Tavares line and pair him up with Nylander for a different offensive look and let Tavares be wasted in the match up?

You can use this argument if they were still even or in the positives for plus minus but they're deep in the negatives. Furthermore, how much are we paying Tavares and will be demanded to pay Marner? It's not enough to simply use them as a shutdown line (which hasn't exactly even been wholly successful with consistency), they need to produce some more offense for that kind of money.

Like it or not, to win we need Tavares to score.
He should have scored today.

There is no guarantee Matthews or his line will be going in game 7.

The Nylander line has little offence with Brown and Marleau there.

Game 6 was our shot, we blew it.

It's an uphill battle now.

They're -3 at least. Not to mention JT and Marner have been bad on the PP, and Marner has been bad on the PK.

Not gonna score? Ok then you can't be a minus.

Agreed with this. Kapanen would look good on a line with JT that's tasked to shut things down.

That frees up Marner to play with Matthews (or Nylander).

You could also do Hyman JT Brown. Real shutdown line.

Kadri gets suspended last year we lose. Kadri gets suspended this year we lose? If we lose big changes will be needed.

The problem is the Bergeron line is scoring. Put brown on that line and move Marner to play with Nylander. Nylander line is dead with brown and Marleau on it. The leafs didnt pay $11 Mil to not produce. He needs to step up his game in game 7.

That’s the thing. Boston’s top line hasn’t been scoring at will but they’ve still out scored our line at ES. The real problem is these losers haven’t been able to match Boston’s top line production on the PP.

Tavares has been a total flop this series, when he was brought in to be the difference. He’s got one more shot in game 7 to be a difference maker.

What is eaten alive? He was 50% today. The problem is on the PK. Hyman was 17%.

I mentioned this in the game thread, but the Leafs should definitely take Marner off that line. The line is being used as a defensive line, so throw Brown on there and put Marner with either Matthews or Nylander. It doesn't make sense to have them have zero focus on offense and at the same have your best offensive creator on a defensive line.

Tavares had 47 goals in the season. They need him to put the puck in the net... whether he does so at ES or on the PP.

Why are you wondering this, it's the most obvious thing to do to put he best playmaker on the team with the best shooter (Matthews). The problem is that in game 7, Boston will have last change negating much of this. The time to have done it was today.

wtf is with this bullshit excuse that they aren't producing because they're used in a defensive role ?

wtf do people think spewing this bullshit think it actually means ?

Tavares is the 2nd highest paid player in the league this year and all he can manage 5 on 5 is an empty net goal and a couple of secondary assists which consisted of him chipping the puck back up the boards to the point

we're paying him 11m dollars to be an impact player and not to be dominated by the bruins top line

Defensive role?

Perfection line 2018: 9 goals in 7 games
Perfection line 2019: 8 goals in 6 games

It's a complete joke. It's impossible for some to be objective, they got their Marner or Tavares jersey on and they'll find any reason they can to defend their play and put the focus on all the players not playing against the "top line in hockey". Soon to be 22 million going to a checking line and claims of that's what their role is now lmao

It's fair criticism, although understanding they are being sacrificed in a matchup role, they do need to step up in Game 7. All hands on deck. If you look at the Bruins board, everyone's extremely critical of their big line after a loss, and they've had to come back and produce in Game 4 and 6. Tavares' speed has been an issue, it looks like it's taking a lot out of him because he doesn't have elite wheels to compete. Just need him to score in an unexpected situation and hope Matthews is producing.
