this is OT and i DO NOT want this to turn into a bashing DP thread....but i am absolutely SHOCKED that we have not heard any news in any capacity on DP.....i was really assuming wang would throw him a bone and give him some sort of apprentice role within the organization....i do not believe he has retired, but he is not even playing in the ECHL or anything right now...

does anyone have any insight or comments? i am truly just wondering...was always a big proponent of his

**ONCE AGAIN,THIS THREAD WAS NOT MADE FOR OPINIONS ON WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF HIM AS A PLAYER OR PERSON...SIMPLY ON HIS STATUS NOW**

I'll admit, I'm surprised too. I figured if and when the cord was cut, he'd be doing the Doug Weight thing, brought on for some sort of consulting or assistant coaching gig. My guess is the buyout hurt the relationship a bit, evidenced by some of those comments DP was making during the run up to and shortly after the buyout.

The CBA prevents players from playing for the team that bought them out for a year. I presume that has nothing to do with any jobs outside of that, but just a thought as well.

Its not even 6 months. I'm sure no NHL organization was beating down his door after we cut him loose. I expected he would take some time to himself, to figure out what he wants to do the rest of his life. That sort of thing.

I'd expect him to either be back in the organization as a goalie coach/scout or as a game commentator sometime in 2014.

My guess is he was offered maybe assistant coach in Bridgeport or vice president of the islanders, something like that. My other guess is he is angry we had the nerve to think we could win a stanly cup without him rather then with him. His ego is three times bigger then Derek jeters or mariano rivera's. DIpietro should wisen up quickly, if wang suddenly sells then nobody will be offering him a thing around here.

I think he was hoping to keep playing elsewhere. Honestly surprised he didn't get an AHL gig, but who knows, maybe he has too much pride for that.

it is 100% that he is not getting a shot as a backup in the NHL right now....id even be shocked if he got an AHL gig....if he wants to keep playing, i think he would have to goto europe or the ECHL, etc.....

i think we hear him call it quits at some point this season and i would assume he will be in the isles org in some capacity...id love to see him as the color guy or take over for ruttgaizer, but i think it may be too soon for that and he may want to stay out of the spotlight a bit...

if i hear ruttgaizer say the "big leagues" or "the law-firm of hamonic and macdonald" or "the professor" one more time, i am gonna lose it! hhaah

I am surprised to, I wouldn't be surprised if he had some offers, but turned them down, I wouldn't be surprised if his injuries are worse then we thought and that is his real motivation for not playing, I would figure someone would take a chance on him even if it is in Europe

I think eventually Rick is going to go to broadcasting and not into management/coaching. He's really bright, obviously has the face for it as well. Also seems to follow and like sports as well (from past interviews and tidbits). I remember he did a little guest spot on VS. a while back and he did very good for a player.

I bet we would have if he asked but Im sure he's not over trying to be an NHL goalie. Maybe a year or 2 down the line we will hear about it.

ha there is no way he is going to be that guy doing the interviews, maybe I can see him doing the Color job at some point, but the guy who hangs by the locker and interviews the players, no NHLer would want that job especially a guy like DP

and I think the fans burned the bridge of DP staying on the Island in any capacity, with the way the fans booed him in his final games at the Coliseum last year, I am sure the Isles are his least favorite team in the league

If I was Isles MGMT -- I wouldn't offer a job, and if I were DP, I wouldn't take one.

From an Isles perspective -- The DP era was a flop. The guy had a couple of decent seasons, but the team didn't. Then the injuries.. and the dumb contract. Honestly.. If the isles are trying to turn a corner in the standings, as well as off the ice/front office/impact in the league, I wouldn't want ANYTHING to do with him. Just the name makes peoples eyes roll into the back of their heads (similar to what I did when I saw this thread :) )

And look at it from DP's side -- The guy was signed for huge $$ ( and the expected pressure to perform), really fell flat on delivering that. Not a fan favorite and gave the team and its fans nothing but aggravation. The guy was demoted, finally,, fans celebrated, the team went on an amazing run, and he admitted he was thinking of suicide..

Why would he want to come back into an environment like that?

I just don't see it happening.

I'm not surprised at all that DP is on the sidelines.

If I was a team owner, and my GM was exploring the possibility of adding Rick DiPietro to the roster, I'd be exploring the possibility of replacing my GM.

Based on what I've seen and moreso what we've all read and heard, DP just isn't agile enough to be an NHL goalie right now. DP will have to improve his physical condition and then regain his goaltending form before he can even THINK of asking a team for a try-out..

And even then, the try-out would have to be a double-super secret probation try-out that "never happened" -- for the GM's sake.

But in the end, what DP's future holds depends exclusively on his abilities to stop a puck... and if he can prove he can do it, he will be back in the league.

Throw him a bone? They're paying him $1.5M for the next 15 years. They owe him nothing else.

The guy is 32 years old, has more money than he knows what to do with, and just went through a physically and mentally grueling six-year stretch during which his career went down the tubes. Is it really that surprising that he's decided to disappear and maybe put his feet up for a while?

This. I hope for Ricks sake that he is finding a new passion in his life, I don't care how much money the guy has, it has to be hard watching your lifes work just go down the tubes like that.

It's too bad he wasn't a plumber or typist or restaurant worker. They get the fulfillment of a job they have to slave over until the day they die, ever changing employers, getting their wages cut and benefits taken away while trying to stay above water.

Yes I too feel bad for Rick. As he cruises the Med on his yacht named "Eat Cake" eating creme brulee and drinking Cristal, his eyes must cloud a little and he must feel some discomfort at having had his dreams die playing a game for a living. The Duck liver pate and dinner parties in the Hamptons are ruined forever because he can never add the Stanley Cup to his swimming pool filled with gold.

Why didn't he simply become a bicycle repair man, or sewer worker, or sweat shop sewing specialist? Yes, I feel bad for Rick too. That kind of longing must be worse than spending all day in a field gathering rice while contracting cholera. The horror.

If I had his financial resources, I probably WOULD be an ice cream cart guy in key west!

Not surprised at all we haven't heard anything about him. Hopefully he's spending quality time with his family, taking as much time as he wants to figure out what to do next. No reason at all it has to be hockey related. Clark Gillies does financial planning, Steve Webb does ink and toner cartridges, etc.
