Pronger/Niedermayer. You don't need an elite center to win with them.

Yup and in the 3 seasons they played together, their Norris record was pretty decent. Had they been on separate teams, their finishes would have likely been higher.

2007 - Nieds 2, Prongs 3
2008 - Nieds 10 (48 games), Prongs 8
2009 - Nieds 9

I was going to say why include Konstantinov with 3 other guys who all won a Norris but then I researched and saw that Stevens never won one, which kind of surprised me until I remembered what a tough era he played in in terms of elite defensemen. Just bad luck overlapping his career with players like Lidstrom, Bourque and Chelios .

no reason... I just like all four players and thought it would be interesting lol... its a landslide right now which I wasn't expecting
yeah Id say

Pronger>Stevens>Nieds>>>Konstatinov

Vlad's career was just too short, sadly, but that duo doesnt nearly have the offensive talent Prongs-Nieds had. Almost too defensive.

Replace Konstatinov with say... Leetch or MacInnis.

Stevens has the highest point total for a season out of all the 4... keep in mind that was before Lemaire turned Stevens into a physical monster during the trap era...
honestly I can't say I agree with the poll results... I feel like Stevens and Konstantinovs physical presence would make this closer... not to take anything away from Pronger... he was a physical monster too

true, SS was more offensive in STL/WSH... but which Stevens are you getting with Vlad then? I assumed his prime years in NJ.

I like Konstantinov and Niedermayer does often get overrated, but Konstantinov really doesn't belong in this poll with the other guys.

He's not if your just stat watching he was a force. I can see him being rated the 4th out of this group but he belongs with them.

He's obviously nowhere near the level of Pronger or Stevens, so the question is whether or not he's as good or close to being as good as Niedermayer, and if Niedermayer is close to Pronger and Stevens. Like many, I share the view that Niedermayer gets overrated by the hockey media and many fans, however I do think that Konstantinov trails behind him far more than he (Niedermayer) trails behind Pronger and Stevens, with all due respect to Konstantinov.

I see that Stevens and Pronger are clearly 1 and 2 (personally I take Stevens but that's another discussion). However for myself Konstantinov wasn't far off from Niedermayer might have been the system with Detroit. However he was always so calm never made mistakes and was very physical. He didn't put up the points the other three did but he was a defensive force who could chip in when need be. Shame we only saw him for 5-6 years.

What sets this poll so far off is "in their prime".

At his best, Pronger won the Hart. It's no disrespect to Stevens to say he never came close to that level. And Pronger is one of the few defensemen who was just as much of a playoff terror as Stevens, so that card doesn't work. Basically, Pronger > Stevens by a clear margin if we are talking about their top level of play.

80% of Niedermayer's career isn't all that far above Konstantinov. Both were good 1B type defensemen, with very different styles. But if we're talking about 2004-07 Niedermayer, that's a different story. A lot of people felt he was the best D in the league at that time. Again, it's no disrespect to Konstantinov to say nobody ever had that argument about him.

Putting Pronger and Niedermayer together, you've got arguably the two highest peaks for any non-Lidstrom defenseman of the past 30 years. Unless we dial this back and talk about the weak parts of each career, there's not much argument to be had here.

Vladdie doesnt get the respect he should in a poll like this. Its because his career was shortened right when he was hitting his stride unfortunately. We only got to see about 2 years of his prime. If he got to play 2 more years, people are talking about him in a very similar breath with most of these guys. If he plays a few more years, he probably wins another cup or two with a couple more top 3 norris finishes. And thats at a time when there was still Anti-Euro bias in voting. The only guy who hit like him was Stevens as well.

I definitely get why people are saying he doesnt belong with this grouping, based on the fact hes only got like 2 years of play to go off of but going into a playoff series I have no problem taking Vladdie over Neidermeyer when looking at those 2 years and his resume to be honest. I would put them very close/splitting hairs but he definitely belongs in the conversation

Pronger best of this bunch by far. Nieds and Steven's are close. One of these is not like the others.

Pronger/Nieds by a pretty big margin.
