Stanley cup finals = playoffs, the whole tournament

Stanley cup final = the final of the finals, final of the tournament

Thats what I understand

The Pens and the Preds are playing in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.

The Pens, Hawks, and Kings collectively have been to a lot of Stanley Cup Finals this decade.

People get confused because it's multiple games.
The fact that the NBA calls it the Finals and is played simultaneously as our league's "Final" doesn't help.

People get used to the word finals. Hell even in high school and college we call final exams "finals".

Plural. It is a set of games.

It was always called the Stanley Cup Finals. The above poster made reference to the NBA trademarking "The Finals".
