Speculation: Stamkos?

So believe me when I say, I am a monumental proponent of making fiscally responsible signings in the hopes that we lock up a very solid young core for the foreseeable future, and still have cap to fill out the roster.

All this said, it seems Benning is bent on spending as much as he can for.......reasons.

Instead of taking on OEL which we seem to be relatively ok with doing (Benning, not necessarily us), would it make more sense to try and instead allocate that money to a guy like Stamkos? Difference maker when healthy, LTIR candidate when not.

TB needs to get rid of salary, and could basically bring back the entire team (minus Stammer) with this move. He also famously only played about three minutes when they first win the cup, so they may view him as an EXTREME luxury.

Thoughts on what a deal here might look like? Thoughts on whether it's even worth exploring?

Don’t think we have the prospects or picks to entice Tampa to do this. He won’t go for as much as Eichel but he will definitely cost more than Reinhart. We’ll also have a tough time of fitting him into our salary cap unless we are able to move Myers and Ferland off our roster. I still think our number one priority should be on the backend.

He was 9th in toi among tampa forwards in the playoffs. It’s the obvious choice for them purely on ice but trading their captain after back to back cups is probably not the best move for morale

Yes why not he seems young and healthy enough to carry this team....

We don't even use the one-time options on the PP we already have.

As for Stamkos's willingness to come here? You never know. A guy who has made his money and has cups could be interested in experiencing life in a hockey-first Canadian market.

He is a power play specialist at this point on an 8,5 m/year for another 3 years and he is 31 years old with multiple bad injuries. We need defenders and forwards who are responsable, cheap and can score at ES.

This is not some game where you make all kind of fantasy trades and clear cap space at the press of a button.

Without salary retention, I don't think Stamkos is seen as having much value. Injuries and age is making him more and more of a PP specialist. At ES, Stamkos scored at a rate similar to Brandon Sutter this season.

I think if our situation was different it would make more sense. We need defence more than anything and if we're trading the 9th overall pick it should be to acquire a young defender.

Somebody like Cernak would be perfect but of course guys like that are rarely available.
