How about if the league tallied how many points teams eliminated from post-season contention earned after being mathematically eliminated? The worst teams would still have an advantage as they'd theoretically have longer to bank points, while the teams that need it the least wouldn't have time at all. Would keep games for the bottom teams interesting.

Could hurt the trade deadline. For a generational player wouldn't you be less likely to sell off to be more competitive. Or more inclined to leave one or two stars on IR longer than needed and bring them back once your out?

Good point. Wouldn’t be able to pry good players off of tanking teams and the TDL would be more boring than it already can be.

Just award the first overall pick to the 32nd place team, it's not that hard. FFS. It's so simple. Who needs this elaborate shit? Lottery, then a tournament now potentially? Horseshit.
I think the old lottery was fine. Worst five teams have a shot at #1, can only move up 4 spots. Any non playoff team having a chance at #1 is kind of crazy.

Can't see the video but in theory... cool. In reality... disaster.
Transcript starting at around 3:24:
James Mirtle: "When you guys were down in Florida, Gary Bettman didn't like the idea of the play-in round, but - another novel idea being kicked around, CJ?"

Chris Johnston: "Yeah. Fair to say you might like this one even less, although when we're on that boondoggle we're not just sitting around the pool, James, we're talking to people. And one idea that I know was discussed a little bit, at least quietly, at the Breakers Hotel is the idea of potential[ly] having the teams at the bottom of the standings play a series of games for the right to draft Number One overall. This of course would replace the NHL Draft Lottery. I don't think it has a good chance of taking hold, but it certainly was something that a few people were discussing."

Mirtle: "And the forever problem with that is the players on the team do not care if they get any first overall pick, so they would have little incentive. But, fun that they're thinking outside the box, anyway."

Just give first pick to the worst team.
Why is intentional tanking seen as such a grievous offence?

Be a shit team and shoot yourself in the foot financially and reputationally for a hope that the player you draft is the next superstar. Seems like a lose/maybe win situation
I'd suppose the bolded is potentially a factor - shooting yourself in the foot financially has a negative effect on the League's bottom line, and it also reflects even more poorly on the league than the lottery itself does (since the other major pro sports also have them). Also, the lottery is another Event that can pull in some advertising dollars and media influence.
