The whole gang is getting back together for season 46 of Saturday Night Live.

NBC confirmed that all of the cast of season 45 including Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson will be returning as the sketch comedy series returns to Studio 8H on October 3.

There had previously been some talk that some of its bigger names were considering leaving at the end of their contracts.

McKinnon was thought to have been previously been mulling her future on the show, having become one of the breakout stars of the last few years and ahead of her role in Hulu limited series The Dropout. Bryant and Strong were thought to be coming to the end of their contracts but will also remain with the show.

The fact that season 45 was interrupted by COVID-19 may have played a part in some cast members’ decisions, with the lure of getting back to some normalcy with familiar faces not an unattractive option right now ahead of one of the most important, and unusual, Presidential elections.

Definitely Kate MacKinnon, Pete Davidson, and Kenan Thompson. The first two have made the jump into movies, and everyone knows Kenan.

Pete Davidson blows.

I'm not a fan of his at all and I think he's better known for his off-screen antics than anything he does on-screen. I give him about 3 years before he falls into the " whatever happened to..." category.

Is he really a big name? I guess for the current cast maybe, but I don’t know if I’d call him a big name in show business.

“The King of Staten Island” was the biggest movie release of June. If he wasn’t a big name before that, he definitely was afterward.

Also, he was engaged to Ariana Grande which in its own way was probably a bigger spotlight than SNL.

I don't fall for publicity stunts.

Kate is the only talented cast member with Beck. Keenan is so so.

We were talking about big names, not most talented.

Fact is, Pete Davidson is a (much) bigger star than Beck Bennett, regardless of talent.
Is pete davdison a star because of his talent or is it because he had a publicity stunt with Grande?

Pete is not a star. Have you seen his stand up special? That didn't make him a star, that's for sure.

This is easily the worst cast the show has ever seen.

I wouldn't call dating her and getting engaged before breaking it off after her immediate ex-boyfriend died a "publicity stunt". People have personal lives, even people you don't like.

Again, he was the lead in the biggest movie release of June. Everyone who has commented in this thread has posted their opinion of him. I'm not saying you have to like him, but he is indeed a big name in the context of SNL casts.

This is easily the worst cast the show has ever seen.

Has there ever been a cast which was not called the worst cast ever, and then celebrated 10 years later?

This is said every time a new cast comes along.

Chase, Belushi, Curtin, Murray...

What? Dana Carvey? Phil Hartmann? Who are these guys?

What? Mike Myers? Adam Sandler? Who are these guys?

What? Will Ferrell? Bill Hader? Who are these guys?

What? Kate MacKinnon? Kristen Wiig? Who are these guys?

Dumping on the current cast of SNL is as big a tradition as SNL itself.

Or just dumping on the show itself. People always love to say the show sucks. They’ve said that for decades. How it used to be so much better.

I've been watching SNL for about 35 years. The writing is not as good as it used to be. Between transitions it always dips but over the last 5 season it has been in decline.

I don't find them individually funny. The characters they play have no depth. The don't push it or make it convincing. the few that do can't carry the show.

To be honest, I think we tend to remember only the highlights of the older shows. I’m in the group that favours Chase, Belushi, Murray, Radner etc. But I can also remember some pretty bad episodes from that era as well.

It really depends on your age.

I liked some of the old stuff but I found it was pretty hokey too.

When I really started following was the mid 80s so it was Dunn, Hartman, Carvey, Lovitz, Miller, Jackson, Nealon.

I think you always have a bit of a soft spot for the cast that brought you into the show.

I PVR it every week and watch it on Sunday mornings and there's still some great stuff out there.
