A player becomes a UFA if they turn 27 prior to July 1st, Dunn turns 27 the October after this deal ends. Or if they have accrued 7 NHL seasons and Dunn has only 4 to this point and will be at 6 when this deal is done. So they still have his rights for 1 more season after this deal ends.

As for the deal it's a fine contract. He was already making about 2M and he paced for what would be a 11g 27a 38p season over a full 82 games. I think why a guy like Dunn would get a bit more than someone else with similar point totals is his goal scoring. He had 12 three seasons ago, paced for 10 two and 11 this past one. A D man who can pot 10 goals+ is a huge plus to have on the backend.

Seems like a bit much on the AAV side but it's only for two years and Dunn can now show he's a top four guy in the NHL.

This should also put an end to the discussion of where he'll be flipped cause I doubt Francis signs him to this contract to trade him before the season starts, IMO.

Very excited to see if he can flourish with the opportunity given in Seattle.

He was arbitration eligible. So, assuming the Kraken ran the comps then this should put them in the right range of what an arbitrator would rule.

Even with the arbitrator's ruling both parties could still walk away and he becomes a UFA and signs elsewhere. Even if Seattle were to trade him later, better to re-sign him or lose him for nothing.

I’m very happy with this signing. When I was looking through the roster after the expansion draft, Dunn was someone who stood out to me as a potential breakout candidate if he can stay healthy and if he’s given an expanded role.

Hi fellow hockey enthusiasts!

In the wake of Dunn’s recent signing at 4M AAV for the next two seasons, do you think that GM Francis might actually intend to use him as a trade bait to fetch the future assets he failed to acquire prior to the expansion draft - especially considering the rate at which offfensive-minded D are signing nowadays?

If so, I humbly think that with the Habs’ deep prospect pool, depth on the wings and numerous picks next year (10 in total, 6 in the first 4 rounds), Montreal would make a great dancing partner!

Such a trade would however entail that the Habs must shed salary in the process. In that regard, besides Lekhonen - and maybe Kulak - I don’t see any other contract who could be shipped without the Habs having to add some prohibitive incentives (Byron’s AAV and injury; Drouin’s AAV and clouded future, ie.)

Bearing that in mind, would a package centered around Lekhonen (LW/RW ; 2.3M AAV, still RFA next offseason)+ Kulak (LD, 1.85M AAV) as a stop-gap or « re-trade » asset + Prospect (LD Harris or Struble maybe?) + Pick(s) (2nd or 3rd + 4th) be enough to generate interest?

My personal opinion is that having Dunn on this team is critical given the makeup of our roster. Outside of Gio our D has no real offense. That and Gio is NOT going to be part of our roster going forward and our small prospect pool is unlikely to have a replacement in place.

I would have little to no interest in the likes of Lekhonen or Kulak. Some kind of deal with Struble/Harris + picks may be fair from a overall value standpoint but this is major quantity for quality type of deal. We are not overflowing with prospects that can replace Dunn and would prefer if we keep Dunn unless there is a proven top-6 forward or top-4 d-man coming back.

I think it would be prudent for us to stand pat as far as Dunn goes and see what he can do in an expanded role on the team. Nobody can guarantee how he does but I feel there is a good chance that 4M looks to be a steal after this season.

This is a nice contract. Dunn is still young and have already produce at a nice levevl. In the NHL he got 102 pts in 267 game. For a D this is really good. He has the same AAV than Adam larsson.

For the trade options, i don't think it is a great idea to trade Dunn. He is one of our young D that will still develop and probably be a really good PP specialist. We need to have some good puck moving D, and he is one of them!

The D that are locked in are Oleksiak, Dunn and Larsson, IMO.

Giordano is obvious, but for how long is up in the air. Since it seems unlikely we would extend him (he'll be 38 in a couple months), it's almost inevitable he is moved at the TDL unless we REALLY think we are looking at a deep playoff run. So with Gio and the 3 above, that's our top 4 at least until around the TDL. The other 3 will be here for the foreseeable future.

Fleury is another one that seems to be in the plans for at least the medium-term future. The team introduced him on ED day and has promoted him a decent bit. While he has some draft pedigree and possible #4 upside, he's been little more than a decent bottom pairing guy so far in his career. Francis likes him and drafted him in Carolina and I'm fine with him being a staple on the bottom pair - you could do worse. But that essentially leaves us with 4 LH and 1RH (Larsson) pencilled in and I'd certainly say Lauzon (LH) has the inside edge on the 6th spot. Having only one RH shot on the back end isn't ideal.

I can see Gio traded before trade deadline depending on record.
