From The Athletic :

Red Wings

Sticking in the Atlantic, there’s the Red Wings. While the Senators were busy renovating their offense last summer, Detroit focused on defense. The problem is, their forward group in terms of GSVA, currently ranks 22nd in the league. That should change if (or when) Jakub Vrána returns to the NHL level, but it will only help so much. Meier, however, would be a game-changer that could really kick this offense up a notch. It would move some players into more appropriate roles, and help refine an area ahead of Dylan Larkin’s next contract. This would be a better route than just adding a likely overpriced player in free agency and trying to maximize their next few seasons before an inevitable decline considering the team’s timeline. And Detroit has the capital to move in both draft picks and prospects. Would anyone be surprised to see Steve Yzerman with a trick up his sleeve to land a player like this?

I voted "Yes, but in the offseason" unless the Sharks really wanted to move him before the deadline to avoid the whole qualifying offer (it's north of $10M)/negotiating a new contract mess of the offseason.

Not sure, I think he is going to cost too much being per year and not necessarily be a bus driver type player, although he will definitely get paid like one.

Perfect scenario, resign Larkin, get Horvat in UFA, steal Meier in a trade and get serious lottery luck and draft Bedard.

Now someone make it happen.
That's $30M+ in salary. Timo's QO is $10M, if he gets $10M then Bo and DBoss will both ask for the same.

While it's a good trio, it's too much salary cap.

Is he like upgrade over Bert? It will be pricey and going to move needle

Yes, and it’s not even close. Meier is second in the NHL in shots; the guy just knows how to make space and more importantly, get shots off.

Pssh, absolutely not. They need a center and Larkin resigned before even thinking about something like this.

Pretty unlikely he gets 10M.

With Vrana's future uncertain and Bertuzzi unable to stay healthy I wouldn't say this team doesn't need another high end winger or two.
Which is why a trade isn't gonna happen. His current salary is $10M on a back loaded deal, so his QO is $10M.

As for wingers, the team is doing fine without Vrana and Bert. The wingers can all score with DBoss, but none of the other centers.

Can you provide some comps?
He's like... 80% of a young Ov. He's a volume shooting winger that creates chances for himself and is pretty physical. He leads SJ by a healthy margin in shots and hits.

He's not as big, not as fast, shot isn't as good but style wise young Ov is closest comparable. Or maybe a better Tarasenko.

That doesn't mean he'll get a contract with a 10M cap hit unless he desperately wants that 1 year contract (a huge gamble).

Larkin comes in around $9,000,000 and Horvat and Meier $8,500,000 apiece all on 8 year deals it's very doable. Bertuzzi will be gone both Zadina and Vrana are out the door. We could have close to $50,000,000 to spend this coming summer. Plus still have tons for both Raymond and Seider in the summer of 2024.

Meier isn't getting anywhere close to $10,000,000 per. On a long term deal he should come in around 8 x $8,500,000 perhaps slightly more.
Why would Meier sign for less if 10 mio is his qualifying offer? I certainly wouldn't trade for Meier if I'm not willing to pay him.

Bandaid. We need elite players. Like Horvat, he doesn’t move the needle enough.
Horvat is tied at #7 for goals this season with Ovechkin. McDavid and Pasta are the only players that have more than 2 goals more.

So basically you're saying McDavid is the only player that can move the needle, yet everyone here expects Kasper to do so. Kasper is not McDavid, and chances are he'll be less of an impact player than Horvat.

My concern here is overpaying for a player that had a career season with numbers well above career average. That usually doesn't work out well, Copp for example.
