Should the Red Wings buy out Niklas Kronwall

Kronwall had a bad knee injury that prevented him from playing at the start of the season. He now has a groin injury that seems to have completely eliminated his ability to be a contributor. He's on pace to put up 7 points this season. Frankly, the team looks much better with him off the ice. He has two years remaining at just under a $5 million cap hit per year.

Should the Red Wings buy him out?

His buyout numbers aren't bad and if we need to work the preseason numbers in order to accommodate players like AA and Tatar in their RFA deals it would be a solid option. But LTIR is more likely and absolves us of the cap hit, albeit with the stipulations to start the season.

You buy him out, then what? Depends what you're doing with the cap space and roster spot.

This is what it would cost (Thanks, CapFriendly!)

17-18 Buyout Cap-Hit - $2,125,000 (Savings of $2,625,000 of what his cap-hit would have been)
18-19 Buyout Cap-Hit - $3,875,000 (Savings of $875,000 of what his cap-hit would have been)
19-20 Buyout Cap-Hit - $875,000 (Added on Cap-Hit - $875,000)
20-21 Buyout Cap-Hit - $875,000 (Added on Cap-Hit - $875,000)

because of the structure of Kronwall's deal we don't save a whole lot on the cap. We might as well just ride it out, and let LTIR handle it when the need arises. Or just bench him.

I know a lot of factors come into play here, but if he's unable to play, he should retire. I know that's leaving money on the table, but Rafalski set a pretty good precedent for it.

If not that, LTIR. The worst thing would be that pride would keep him trying to come back, management supporting that and Blash continuing to play him and give him significant minutes.

You could put Erickson in that same boat, as well.

That's another thing, his cap recapture upon retirement is way more attractive than his buyout number. They'd rather he retire before buyout, but that's on him it's his money. So LTIR

No, no more buyouts, we don't want never ending dead space on the books Weiss is bad enough. this team could be in the same place in the standings having let Weiss's contract run out like they should have.

No they should not. They also couldn't even if they wanted to because of Kronwall's injury.

Out of respect he should be LTIR, not bought out. In no way should he return to play hockey for the Wings, please no.

It's not hatred for Kronner to be as revolted by his play as I am this season. It's the opposite. I have loved #55 as one of my favorite D in the league. In his prime he was always underrated (by this board too), yet his stats consistently placed him in the top 15 D. Too many amazing attributes of his game to recall in one post.

That's why it's so difficult to watch Kronwall in this current state. I've said before that literally anyone, Smith or Lashoff, are better hockey players right now. It's too bad injuries cut several years off his career but that's life. Kronner at his peak was a legitimate star- this version of the man is far from that greatness, he should be calling it quits.

Use him, or LTIR him. If we buy him out, we lose cap space and a player. If we LTIR him we just lose the player.

I wouldn't mind either situation as long as Holland isn't dumb enough to protect him in the expansion draft.

This is a silly discussion to have with so many questions about the organization at hand.

No. He will be that experienced lockerroom guy, which will mentor kids, until the end of his contract. On-ice level becomes a non-factor as longer we go.

Could be 7th D on his last season.

Gunna keep saying this till it sinks in: The LTIR isn't a blackhole that will eat anything you throw in it. It's more like a toilet that will backup when it's full of too much **** and ruin things. Throwing Kronwall and Franzen on there for the rest of their contracts will hamstring Detroit, especially if Helm, or another glass princess who has a large cap hit goes down.

What should happen to Kronwall? Don't protect him at the expansion draft. If Vegas doesn't take him, then waive him and take that cap relief.

Screw you NHL for your recapture BS and your willingness to stand behind it.

Meh, Kronwall only has 2 years left on his deal after this season. He'll be gone soon enough.
