That's not even a great offer for him as a rental, let alone with an extension in place. That's a ripoff.

Or teams can just wait until July 1 and the blues get nothing...

It's already been made clear he is not going to be a blue next year, that hurts their bargaining ability a bit.

It's funny, the Shattenkirk consensus was that he was a top 2 Dman a couple of months ago, is scoring a lot of points, has performed great in the playoffs (offensively it seems atleast). What does the regular Blues fans think?

very good #3 dman who should be sheltered from heavy competition. Elite powerplay specialist, great in o-zone. Weak defensively, sometimes looks lost in own zone but is at least willing to get aggressive. Bad first pass for a guy so good offensively.

What exactly is your point? This is the second person I have seen try to make this point and it still has zero logic behind it.

There is logic to it? If they pay the extra price to bring him in early it massively increases the chances he re-signs there over the other teams.

Hopefully TB will work a Tyler Johnson deal with Shattenkirk. Maybe TJ & Coburn for Berglund & Shattenkirk.

Going to be interesting to see where Shattenkirk goes, guy is one of the better offensive defenseman in the league. He's going to have loads of teams interested in him.

Maybe the Leafs have better luck with Shatty than they did with Stamkos and maybe they don't. But they're a young team who is going to get beat up in the first round or two--if they even manage to hold on and make the playoffs. Absolutely no point in giving up Kapanen/Leipsic and a 1st just to get hammered by Washington in the first round.

In summation: Leafs fans KNOW that Shattenkirk will sign with them as a UFA so there is no need to trade for him. They also say he is too old for a rebuild so don't trade for him, but sign him as a UFA.

Rangers fans say he will sign with them, so there is no point to anyone trading for him, including them.

Many people claim they KNOW he will only go to an Eastern team.

Everybody who was raving about him a month ago when they thought he would only sign with Boston or the Rags is suddenly downplaying his talent.

Does that sum it up?

Meh. Garrioch isnt much better then an unnamed internet source. The fact he somehow thinks only the Bruins have the ability to sign him to an extension speaks to that.
That statement has me curious as well.
I'm wondering if it's a situation of him thinking the Bruins are the only ones with the cap flexibility to do a long term deal at the price Shattenkirk will likely be getting.
I don't know, but it is an interesting statement to make without context.

I think it was a typo....Blues can sign him longer than anyone.

The Leafs have the most cap flexibility in the league (or pretty close to it).

IMO its just another hilariously wrong comment by a terrible "reporter".

Gardiner + Bozak
For
Shattenkirk + Lehtera @ 3M + conditional 1st (turn to 2nd if Shatty re-signs)

Marner feeding Shatty on the PP would be lethal

 The conditional 1st is on the wrong side here...if Shatty re-signs, there will be a condition that the Leafs give up a high draft pick. I can see the Blues giving up a draft pick if Shatty doesn't re-sign, but if he does, then the value is just way off in favor of the Leafs. It's not that lopsided, but I just see a signed Shattenkirk >> Gardiner, and Bozak >> Lehtera @ $3mil. Perhaps just rid of the conditional pick altogether if Shattenkirk re-signs. The difference between a signed Shattenkirk and an unsigned Shattenkirk is not the Blues giving up a 2nd instead of a 1st.

Wow!

I haven't seen Chuck Lefley since he was a late-season addition to the Brandon Wheat Kings in 1970. A lot of water under the bridge since then.

You're misreading the smoke signals, Chuck. Leafs Nation doesn't know where Shatty will sign, and we really couldn't care less. If it's with the Leafs, that's nice unless it gobbles up cap room that will be needed elsewhere.

We're focused on building for the future, not going after older players who will be past their best-before dates when our young core is ready.

Whatever happens, Leafs Nation does not want to waste any futures to acquire him. Otherwise, he can go for a walk.

I'm not reading any "signals" I'm reading the nonsense posted in this thread.

The only teams that will trade assets for Shattenkirk are teams on the bubble that desperately need top end D. I don't see the Habs or Leafs getting him.

Leafs don't KNOW that he will sign with them, just like we didnt KNOW Stamkos would sign with us. The point is that we're not willing to pay the trade price when there is a chance to sign him in FA. Especially when the trade price doesnt come with a guarantee he'll sign. Pretty simple arithmetic, really.
