Loved him as a Hab.
And Slavin changes the game keeping puck out of the net. Take Slavin away and see what happens with this team.Agree that Aho is better —but is he 75% better than Teravainen or 100% better than Pesce. The original point was about best contract.
Slavin is good—but not more valuable than Aho. I stated above he has a better contract. However, think about the Blues, they had two D-men pretty equivalent to Slavin, it was finally getting a 1C and reliable goalie that won the Cup. Pesce has a slightly more valuable contract (according to the Athletic's model) but even D-men as good as Pesce and Slavin don't have the value of a 1C like Aho who can change the game with the puck on his stick.
Agree that Aho is better —but is he 75% better than Teravainen or 100% better than Pesce. The original point was about best contract.
Agree—though "better" is a matter of semantics not math. Not saying 50% more productive. I was just making the case that based on contracts being a "steal" TT at $5.4 could be a "better" deal than Aho at $8.4, which I think is a damn good deal. That’s not how contracts work, though. A $7.5M player is not 50% better than a $5M player. You pay that premium because a small margin between top-end players makes a difference in end-of-season team results.

I get the feeling that the Canes are going to end up missing their window if they don't go all in over the next 2 seasons. No doubt they have the pieces to win the cup even this year with a few doable upgrades.

The thread is currently locked so no one can quote the post after the season ends as the terms go and thusly not qualify for free beer.
Do we have contacts to the administration to have the thread unlocked on April 5th?
He was a one hit wonder. Because he played one good season, finnish posters on HF board hyped him like he was a three headed Crosby.
Carolina made the mistake to pay him big time. He is not worth the money and never will be. I honestly think they should trade him as long as some other GMs think he only had a slow start.
I will give anyone that quotes this after the season ends a free beer if Aho will have more than 20 points at the end of the season.
I would even bet on Haula having more goals than Aho has points at the end of the season.
Haula deserves his 1C spot. Or at least make Staal 1C and Haula 2C.
And no, this is no trolling. I'm absolutely honest about it.
Here's your ticket to a free beer. Just start the quote with this (add brackets before and after): QUOTE="LD29, post: 165379151, member: 312537"
Here's what it looks like:
Cup winners top scorers ages to start the season:
2019: ROR (27), Tarasenko (26), Schenn (27), Perron (30), Pietrangelo (28), Bozak (32)
2018: OVI (31), Kuznetsov (25), Backstrom (29), Carlson (27), Oshie (30), Eller (28)
2018: Crosby (29), Malkin (30), Kessel (28), Sheary (24), Schulz (26), Hornqvist (29)
Age to start the season of the Canes top scorers right now this season: Teravainen (24), Aho (22), Svechnikov (19), Hamilton (26), Necas (20).
IMO, the Canes are still a couple years away from their true cup window even being opened.
There's no debate. Matthews, Marner and Tavares are better than anyone on the Canes. Nylander and Rielly are in the same discussion as the guys you listed. Toronto's forward depth as a notch above. Their secondary players, like Engvall, Hyman, Kapanen, Johnsson, Kerfoot, and Mikheyev gives the Leafs a depth that few teams can match. One of the best young centers in the league. Tampa, Toronto and Colorado are the only teams with a more talented core than Aho, Svech, Teuvo, Slavin and Hamilton right now and even Toronto is debatable.

Where Carolina has a massive advantage is on the back end, where the sum of their parts is so vastly superior to Toronto's that it makes me cry just a little bit. They're just a better defensive team, without question. I'd gladly give up some of that offensive depth for better defensive players. I'm not even talking stars, just reliable depth defenseman that can be trusted to get the puck and not immediately turn it over.
So I agree that Toronto has terrific forward depth and overall their Top 6 especially is something to crow about. I do feel that overall the difference isn't quite as great as one would think (still giving the edge to Toronto). Given what Carolina has in it's system, it seems like the Canes are going to be an exciting team for years to come. There's no debate. Matthews, Marner and Tavares are better than anyone on the Canes. Leafs have Matthews but would probably take Svechnikov over Tavares going forward. Teuvo over Nylander. Aho over Marner due to position. So I agree that Toronto has terrific forward depth and overall their Top 6 especially is something to crow about. I also agree that the Canes back end is pretty stacked.
The one thing that I'd point out is that even though Mitch Marner has 33 more points than Sebastian Aho in his career, Aho has 32 more goals. I'd hardly characterize that as "better" and would easily "debate" the assertion.
I don't think that you can forecast that though, they have the studs now, and should be going for it.
