It really isn't.

You have at least one more cost controlled year and more often than not, players sign multi-year deals.

The players that do that would have resigned as UFAs anyway. If not they're traded like Trouba, Josh Anderson, O'Reilly by Colorado. Or resign for a year and walk like Parise did.

Players have virtually the same amount of control if they choose to exercise it.

In Dunn's case, if Seattle traded him tomorrow, the team acquiring him would have 3 guaranteed years, not just the two that he is signed for, which would be the case if he were a UFA. That is a minimum of 50% more. Minimum.

RFAs have a HUGE incentive to re-sign long term if they feel the money is decent. Taking a one year deal or arbitration ruling can be a big risk. Injury or a down season can cost them millions. Signing for 3 or 4 or more years for a RFA with only one year left can be contract security.

Obviously all RFA's with only one year left don't sign long term, but if you look historically, more of them sign for more than one year. Contract and salary security are usually more important than to rush to become a UFA. The main exceptions are players playing on cap strapped teams that won't spend the cap and don't offer the players fair market value to buy up any UFA years.

Without knowing what type of deal may have been out there for GMRF to take Taransenko and flip him at the ED, it is beginning to appear to me that he made the right decision by taking Dunn. The AAV on Dunn's contract may be a bit high but two years with one more RFA year at the end makes it easy to take. Maybe Dunn being "unsheltered" in Seattle as some say will be a good thing for him. Not too much risk and the contract should be tradeable at deadline in year two.

Are people really sleeping on Dunn this much? After seeing some of the defenseman deals this offseason this is fantastic for both sides. And short term so not really much risk.

If DeAngelos head was screwed on right he’d be looking at 6 million or more based on this contract...

Dunn has outscored DeAngelo in 3 of his 4 NHL seasons. The one DeAngelo outscored him was a complete blowout. So do you pay someone based on being more consistent or having the bigger year?

Dunn has similar career production to Montour who got 3 x 3.5M. Dunn is younger and your hoping has more to prove and this deal still leaves him a RFA at the end.
