probably more than they've added in almost 20 yearsBob Melvin probably thinks he died and went to heaven, SD probably added more payroll in 48 hours than the A's did in the decade or so he was in Oakland
No protection for him, no one behind or in front of him to help...............he took a ton of walks....ESPN is calling Soto maybe the best young player ever?? Idk seems way over the top, he hasn't even hit that well this season and his WS run has made his hype enormous
That's clearly hyperbole - Trout was better than Soto at the same ages, just as one recent example - but Soto is very clearly in pretty rarified air. There aren't a lot of players who have hit as well as he has at the same ages, and they're mostly clear Hall of Famers or future inductees.ESPN is calling Soto maybe the best young player ever?? Their owner isn't that rich(for mlb standards) , how are they affording this?
Read the other day that the Nats have only the 8th best farm system despite trading Soto, Scherzer and Turner in the last year. Not exactly good news.
It's Machado's call what to do, San Diego has no say if he opts in or out. They're at his "mercy" regardless his contract.Padres attendance has been stable around 2.1 million for most years. But their revenue is up $95 million from 6 or 7 years ago.
When the Chargers left SD for LA, the Padres got an influx of revenue via advertising and fan dollars that used to go to the Chargers.
Despite the same attendance, Padres ticket prices have risen to 5th most expensive in MLB, because fans who were buying Chargers tickets are going to more Padres games. They priced out some people so the total attendance is about the same, but it's more money.
Plus they can blow it up and reduce their payroll after 2023. They're trying to win a World Series this year or next year because Machado can opt out of his contract after 2023, which is a year before Soto hits FA. They'll have the option of "Replacing" Machado with Soto by signing Soto, OR they can let Machado walk and TRADE SOTO themselves with 1 year of control left, bringing in a haul of prospects which will probably be about the same as what they gave up to get him.
Cohen and Arte Moreno after losing out on Shohei, he's still gonna get 400 mill eventually.I would say no, he won't.
But he may end up signing 2 contracts that bring him more $ than 440 M over those 15 years.
This Padres tenure has definitely quieted down comparisons to Ted Williams and co.
