I'll be looking for some value in the Queens Plate.
Think i'll keep an eye on the 15 and see if the M/L odds hold up, he's got a chance with Contreras on board.

This was on frenetic Saturday across the circuits. It was so crazy that Laurel, Woodbine, Monmouth, Gulfstream and Churchill all had races go off midday nearly the same time. It was tough to follow but Saturday's are supposed to be different.

June 30, 2018

Belmont (New York):
  • Many riders were at tracks with bigger purses including Woodbine, Gulfstream and Monmouth.
  • Junior Alvarado won the first two races and three total. He is now sixth at the meet in wins.
  • Manny Franco, someone I expected to have a productive day today, won just once in nine starts. He had runner-up stamped on him as he went 9 1-6-0. Six second places is probably rarer than six wins.
  • Flavien Prat, expected to make NY his base this summer, came in from California and won twice.
  • George Weaver was a perfect 2-for-2. The trainer has won three in a row at Belmont and four of his last five starters a the oval.
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $23,000.
  • Race 8: Midnight Bisou (Mike Smith/Steve Asmussen) dominated a reduced field of four in the $250,000 Grade II Mother Goose. Smith had five starts, including three non-winners for Chad Brown, a duo that has rarely -- if ever -- gets paired.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 11: Funtastic (Antonio Gallardo/Chad Brown) shocked in the Grade I United Nations Stakes, as the longest shot on the board at 23-to-1 and won gate-to-wire.. It isn't often Brown pays $48.00. Brown had four entered in the race and finished 1st, 2nd, 5th and 8th. Gallardo won a Grade I race for the first time and earned Jockey of the Week status on Monday (July 2). Among the defeated were Oscar Nominated and Money Multiplier.
  • Race 9: Dream Awhile (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Grade III race in a field of five fillies and mares..
  • Race 8: Harlan Punch (Joe Bravo/David Jacobsen) won the $100,000 Grade III shortened field of four. Page McKenney, one of the best claimers ever, finished second and is now 56 22-16-4 and the 8-year-old PA-bred has earned over $1.89 million.
  • Race 4: The $1 super paid over $25,000.
  • Antonio Gallardo won three times including two of the highest odds at 12-to-1 and 23-to-1.
  • Joe Bravo hit the board six times in seven starts but had just one win. He was 7 1-3-2.
  • Chad Brown won two of the races he entered, a total of seven horses.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 11: The $2 Pick 5 paid to those who won three legs. The $2 Pick 6 paid to those who hit four legs. That was the difficulty for some at Laurel today. The $2 Pick 3 paid over $3,300. The $2 pick 4 returned more than $32,000.
  • Race 8: The $2 double was an astounding $1,666.80. A 58-to-1 shot blew up the Tote board and paid $118.60.
  • Race 7: A 44-to-1 ridden by Al Cortez, who is nearing 60 years of age and rides occasionally, paid $91.20. The $1 superfecta was a phenomenal $61,283.90.
  • Weston Hamilton, once a leading contender for Apprentice of the Year, has now lost 42 straight mounts after a 0-for-9 day.
  • Kevin Gomez won four times. He has been on fire, winning 11 of his last 24 rides. Gomez was winless in his first 36 rides at the meet but has won 8 of his last 20 at the track.
  • Jevian Toledo won three times.
  • Lacey Gaudet had her first win of the meet after 17 losses. Kevin Gomez rode.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • The meet closed today. Churchill is dark until Sept. 14. Kentucky racing shifts to Ellis Park tomorrow.
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. (43) won the rider's title and Steve Asmussen (30) had the most wins among trainers at the meet. Hernandez comes across as astute and dignified in interviews that I have seen. The racing community seems brokenhearted by the loss of Corey Lanerie's wife but it is a good sign that he showed at the track today.
“It's a nice accomplishment, but it's a bittersweet accomplishment to have it happen this meet with what happened with Corey and Shantel,” Hernandez said. “It would mean a whole lot more if Corey was here to battle it out."
  • Race 12: The $1 super paid over $37,000.
  • Race 11: In the Grade III $100,000 feature, Sir Truebador (Ricardo Santana, Jr/Steve Asmussen) won and paid $5.00 as the favorite in a field of 12. Perhaps the real story was a 103-to-1 and a 99-to-1 followed in the exotics. The $.50 tri paid over $2,000. The $.10 super returned over $3,000. When was the last graded stakes races to have two horses at 99-to-1 or higher make the board?
  • Steve Asmussen won three times among the nine he had entered.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • The 91-day meet closed today. The track hasn't conducted live racing since May 6. Tomorrow, the track officially opens its 2018-19 next meet for one day before a summer break until some time in November (dates not official yet).
  • The track had an 8-race card.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • There were 14 races on the card on mandatory payout day, the "Tropical" meet closer. More than $3.400,000 was added to the Pick 6 pool which exceeded $4,000,000. So much for off-season racing in south Florida.
  • Todd Pletcher, Oscar Gonzalez and Victor Barboza each had 17 wins to lead the trainers at the meet. Eleven trainers had 14 or more wins.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the rider's title at the meet with 63, two more than Emisael Jaramillo. It is Gaffalione's sixth rider's title at the track. He is only 23 years of age.
  • Race 14: The $1 Pick 6 paid a staggering $984,769.20 or a $196,000+ for the minimum $.20 bet. The $2 Pick 5 paid over $85,000. The $2 Pick 4 paid over $18,000.
  • Race 13: X Y Jet (Emisael Jaramillo/Jorge Navarro) won the $250,000 Grade III Smile Sprint in gate-to-wire fashion. The 6-year-old million dollar winning gelding won for the 10th time in 22 starts and is 5 4-10-0 since the start of 2017 with the only loss coming in Dubai.
  • Race 12: Stormy Embrace (Wilmer Garcia/Kathleen O'Connell) was the unlikely winner in the Grade II $250,000 Princess Rooney at 15-to-1. The winner receives and automatic bid to the Breeders' Cup. O'Connell has just one other Breeders' Cup start and that was Lady Shipman.

  • Race 7: Good Good (Tyler Gaffalione/Todd Pletcher) was good good in his maiden race at 5 furlongs.
  • Race 2: A 15-to-1 closed like a freight train to track down a 2-to-1 shot. The $2 double paidover $600.
  • Race 1: The $.50 tri paid over $1,000. A 13-to-1 topped the ticket.
  • Luis Saez was 7 1-1-1. I thought he would have a more successful day.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Ramon Vazquez won four times in seven starts and for four different trainers. He had the natural hat trick to end his day. He has won seven of his last 12 starts covering the last two days.
  • The track has the highest carryover entering today at $113,000+.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Race 6: The $.50 tri paid over $2,800, topped by a 33-to-1 shot.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 2: A 43-to-1 shot won and paid $88.60. Kellie McDaid, the winning rider, won on an 18-to-1 earlier in the week. Originally from Ireland, she is riding in the U.S. for the first time on a regular basis this year.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Woodbine handled $14,625,756, second highest in track history to the 1996 Breeders' Cup.
  • Mark Casse won four times with 17 starters. He was the only trainer with multiple wins.
  • Patrick Husbands (3), Gary Boulanger (2) and Florent Geroux (2) combined to win 7 of the 13 races.
  • Rafael Hernandez , the meet's leading rider, won the opener but was just 12 1-2-0 in total. Eurico Da Silva, second in the meet in wins, was 9 0-1-1. The duo combined to go 21 1-3-1.
  • Race 1: Rafael Hernandez rode the longest shot on the board in a field of nine to an $88.50 victory. The $1 tri was over $2,000.
  • Race 6: Delta Prince (Javier Castellano/James Jerkens) won the Grade II $175,000 King Edward.
  • Race 8: Santa Monica (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the Grade II Dance Smartly.
  • Race 9: Long On Value (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $250,000 Grade I Highlander Stakes. The victory is part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series.
  • Race 10: Wonder Gadot (John Velazquez/Mark Casse) was sent off as the favorite and finally met expectations in 2018 as she won the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown as the favorite in the $1,000,000 Queen's Plate. The filly, one of two in the race, is now 12 4-4-3 lifetime. She was winless this year in six starts. Velazquez won this race for the first time in his Hall-of-Fame career. It is the second time Casse won this race, both times with fillies and each for owner Gary Barber. The runners up, both ridden by local riders, were sent off at 28-to-1 and 46-to-1. The $2 tri was over $3,000. Dixie Moon, the other filly in the race, finished last in the field of 16.

Belmont (New York):
  • Canceled due to the heat.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Jason Servis is on fire. The trainer was a perfect 3-for-3 today and is now 31 17-4-5 at the meet. His winning percent is 55 and he has been in the money 84%. Absolutely gigantic numbers.
  • Race 6: A $62.60 winner. The $2 Pick 3 paid over $5,500.
  • Race 4: The $1 super paid over $20,000.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Canceled due to weather.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 7: The $2 Pick 4 paid $17,000+
  • Race 5: The tri paid close to $10,000. The $2 Pick 3 was over $8,000. The $2 Pick 4 returned more than $56,000.
  • Race 3: Staggering numbers as a $176 winner topped an exacta that paid $1,899. A tri returned over $23,000. The $1 super paid over $101,000. 87-to-1, 13-to-1, 6-to-1 and 2-to-1. The recent bombs have been done on turf.
  • Weston Hamilton's skid has not hit 48.
  • Kevin Gomez came back to Earth with an 0-for-8 day. He entered with wins in 11 of his last 24.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • The meet opened today. Kentucky racing is held here for the summer.
  • Race 4: Samuel Camacho, Jr. rode at the track for the first time and won with a 43-to-1 shot. He has been riding in the center of the country recently (not to be confused with his brother Samy Camacho who generally rides in Florida).
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $7,000. The $1 double paid over $1,400.
  • Race 6: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $4,400.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • The meet opened today but takes a break until November, dates have yet to be confirmed.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $6,000. The $2 Pick 5 paid over $86,000.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • The meet opened today.
  • Richard Mitchell, who entered with two wins all year, won twice today.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Race 5: The tri returned close to $5,000. The exacta was a hair short of $1,000.
  • Race 4: The winner paid $88.20.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 6: The Grade III $125,000 Dominion Day was won by a 4-year-old who was the youngest in the race. Tiz a Slam (Stephen Bahan/Roger Attfield) pulled an upset at 11-to-1. He was 1-for-12 since 2017.
  • Race 7: The $1 Pick 4 paid over $5,000.
  • Race 8: Safe to Say (Jerome Lemyte/Mark Casse) won the $225,000 race.
  • Race 9: The $1 super paid over $14,000.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 4 paid over $9,000.
Note:
  • Parx (Philadelphia, PA) and Delaware Park (Delaware) have canceled Monday's cards due to weather. Both are among the few that normally run Mondays.

IOWA OAKS
What: Grade III, one of three graded stakes races held at the track during the meet.
Where: Prairie Meadows, Altoona, Iowa
When: Thursday, July 05, 2018, Race 8
Post Time: 9:28 p.m. Central Time; 10:28 p.m. ET.
Who: 3-year-old fillies
Distance: 1 1/16 miles
Surface: Dirt
Purse: $200,000
Notes:

  • Florent Geroux, one of the best riders in North America; makes a rare visit to Iowa. I touted Sassy Sienna prior to her maiden race, a win, at Indiana last year. She won twice in five starts this year but she was sent off at 37-to-1 in her last race in the Kentucky Oaks and finished midpack. She may be worth a re-visit. Brad Cox is having a stellar 2018.
  • When Steve Asmussen has Ricardo Santana, Jr. riding, the pair always deserves a second look.
  • Bob Baffert has Joe Talamo riding the 5-to-2 favorite Under Drayden Van Dyke, Baffert's current #2 rider (Mike Smith being #1), the filly finished 13th in the Kentucky Oaks in her first start for the Hall-of-Fame trainer.
  • Larry Jones has a filly at 12-to-1. I don't like inside posts as a general rule but Jones is a master with fillies.
  • Karl Broberg is the winningest trainer in North America this year.It will be interesting to see him in a graded stakes race.
  • Edgar Prado has over 7,000 career wins. I don't know any connection to the trainer but for him to go to Iowa to ride a Louisiana-bred is interesting to say the least. It is Prado's only ride on the card.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Canceled due to extreme heat.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Trainer Jay Bernardini won for the 1,000th time in his career. A very good trainer at this level. In his last nine starts, he was in the money 100% at 9 3-3-3. Can't do much better than that. Keep an eye on his horses at Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts) this weekend where he succeeded in past meets.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • The total handle for the Spring meet established a new record at $334 million. Remember, this is technically the track's off-season. Gulfstream didn't always operate in the Spring and for the first time the average daily handle exceeded $6,000,000. It looks as if the track is continuing a 10+ month operation (they go to the former Calder for a few weeks near autumn) but the turf course is not pretty the one downfall of so much racing.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Boy oh boy. My Minnesota guy can't get a break this meet. McLean Robertson finished 2nd and 3rd in the first $50,000 stakes race. He is 74 11-19-16, 15% wins and a strong 62% in the money. He is nearing $500,000 in purse earnings this meet which is number one at the track. But Mac is held in high esteem and we need more wins. He'll get it done eventually, a superior trainer in Minnesota and when he ships to places such as Oaklawn (Arkansas).
Edit/update
^ I think Mac just read my post following the 7th race. He finished the night 9 2-4-1.
  • Race 8: A win.
  • Race 9: A second place.
  • Race 10: The $50,000 feature race. He finished 1st and second and the all-Mac exacta paid $35.20. :naughty:
  • Race 11: The finale. He finished second...again.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • I don't know the last time a rider got eight calls on one card for the same trainer but Iram Diego did tonight for Steve Asmussen. He finished 8 4-1-2. Fantastic night for them.
Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Julien Couton won six times and finished 9 6-1-1. It is the third time in track history a rider won six times on a card. The 37-year-old French native broke a toe Sunday which gave today's accomplishment an added thumbprint. He won consecutive races three times on the card.
=========================

As a side note, this weekend's only Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In..." race will be on NBC.

Saturday, July 7, 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm. ET: Broadcast of the Belmont Sprint Championship, Suburban Handicap and Belmont Oaks Invitational from Belmont Park

Considering that Belterra Park ran today with temps around 95-96 and a heat index between 105-110 and also given the fact that Belmont cancelled the other day right before post, why aren't the various state regulatory boards required to list temperature limits for racing publicly? Do they even consider humidity and the heat index or do they look at straight air temp?

Really more than anything, I'm frustrated by the seemingly lack of concern about the well-being of the horses running in absurd high heat and humidity. Anyway, it's been a hot and humid summer and cancelled cards seem pretty rare.

Presque Isle in PA canceled after the second race early evening. The track announcer cited the health and safety of both riders and horses (probably more than that, too; but from what I heard).

The state boards vary. I can't answer for each entity. As someone pointed out, Gulfstream is in south Florida and I don't recall the last card cancellation. It could be geography within the region with an example being Monmouth which ran the day Belmont canceled; however, the former is near an ocean. New York jocks have canceled in winter at Aqueduct. From what I understand, wind -- blistering cold -- is as much an issue as falling snow.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: The finish in the 6-horse field was a rare 1-2-3-4-5-6. John Velazquez rode the chalky favorite to as close to the rail as possible in picking up the win.
  • Race 3: In the $100,000 feature, Up the Ante (Javier Castellano/Christophe Clement) was the victor.
  • Races 8 and 9: David Cohen brought home the late daily double. In the finale, trainer John Kimmel snapped an 0-for-28 meet record.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three times and hit the board in each of his five starts.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 8: Valedictorian (Carlos Hernandez/Kelly Breen) won the Jersey Girl Handicap. The 20-year-old Hernandez had three wins including a stakes race for the first time.
  • Race 5: A dead heat for win.
  • Jason Servis was 2-for-3. The trainer is a staggering 34 19-4-5 at the meet, percentage 56% and 82%.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 1: Lacey Gaudet won the opener and paid $17.80 as the longest shot on the board, her first win at the meet in four starts. The Maryland-based trainer is going places, comes from a good horse racing family. If I heard correctly, Ron Paolucci may be sending her horses, at least that is what I think he said before the recent Ohio Derby. In this race, she seemed to be wearing white heels. Trainers outfits can vary greatly. I remember when Eric Guillot was holding a beer in everyday clothes talking to well-coiffed Todd Pletcher which set the stage for dichotomy of outfits and personalities. Gaudet, whose father passed away earlier this year, mentioned him on her Twitter account following the race:

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won three times. He was 8 3-1-2. Last year on July 4, he tied a track record with seven wins.
  • Race 3: The winner was 43-to-1 and paid $89.40. The $2 Pick 3 returned over $3,200.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $81,000. The $2 Pick 3 returned close to $3,000.
  • Race 7: A dead heat for win between two of three runners that nearly crossed the wire in unison.

Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Race 4: The fireworks came early. The winner paid $175.80. The exacta was $1,359.20. The tri was over $15,000. The $1 super paid over $70,000. The $2 double paid less than the win bet.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $9,000.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 8: Soi Phet (Alonso Quinonez/Leonard Powell), 10 years old, won the $100,000 Bertrando Stakes and increased his lifetime earnings to over $1,000,000. His lifetime mark is now 59 15-7-6. The winner nosed out favorite B Squared by an extremely close margin.

----------------
Corey Lanerie is scheduled to ride three mounts at Arlington on Saturday including two Grade III races. Maybe a change of scenery from Kentucky was planned, maybe not, but it is a positive indication that he is getting back to a normal routine following the tragic death of his wife a few days ago. He said a few days ago that new memories will be made with his young daughter. The horse racing community is pulling for him. He last rode June 17.

  • Trainer Jason Servis won with his only starter at both Belmont and Delaware today. His record in July is an unthinkable 8 7-0-0. He has had horses run at three tracks (also Monmouth).
  • $5,866,019,879 bet (nearly $6 billion) on racing through the end of June in the U.S. this year.
Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: Almost a repeat of yesterday's opener with the finish in numerical order. The 3 was scratched but the order was 1-2-4-5-6. Junior Alvarado went gate-to-wire from the inside hole and won by about seven lengths.
  • Race 2: Joel Rosario caught Kendrick Carmouche, riding the favorite, at the wire. It has been mentioned in this thread often enough but if Rosario wins early by the third race generally), he will repeat. See race 8.
  • Race 4: Jose Ortiz finished fourth then claimed foul against the winner ridden by Dylan Davis. John Velazquez finished second. Then the verdict. Revised order put Johnny V. on top, Ortiz in third and Davis in fourth.
  • Race 7: Flavien Prat moved his tack to New York for the summer. He is skyrocketing at the meet at 19 5-0-4 (26% wins).
  • Race 8: Joel Rosario rode French-bred Blacktype to a 10th lifetime win. Rosario was 3 2-0-1 today (see Race 2). Trainer Christophe Clement was 2-for-2 today, both on turf which is his specialty.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 1: Lacey Gaudet repeated yesterday's achievement. The trainer won the opener. She is 5 2-0-1 at the meet. Jeremy Rose finished second with the longest shot on the board; he has just 4 wins in 97 starts this year. The $1 exacta was a healthy $40.30 in a field of six.
  • Race 3: Jason Servis won with his first starter at the meet. He is having a spectacular 2018 with a 34% winning percentage.
  • Race 9: Claudio Gonzalez won with his only starter and now boasts a record of 14 8-3-2 at the meet. The win total is third most at the meet. His winning pct. is 57% and he has hit the board 93% of the time.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 5: Luca Panici doesn't get a chance to ride too many favorites but he ended a 21-race skid.
  • Trainer Georgina Baxter, a former exercise rider, debuted today and began her first day of training at 3 1-1-1. Apparently she will train horses formerly under the name of Ralph Ziadie who has been training since 1981; whether that is temporary or something else is inconclusive
Belterra Park (Ohio):
  • Race 8: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $9,000.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Canceled the card after the second race due to the heat.
  • Trainer Chris Hartman won both races.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Live streaming is located here for the night card (times are below): Race Replays | Prairie Meadows
  • Race 4: The team of Ramon Vasquez/Karl Broberg won for the second time. Broberg leads North America in training victories.
  • Race 5: I love 3-year-old gelding Got Mojo. Inside post, good rider. Profit!
  • Beginning with Race 6, I am using 7/4-6-9/4-9 in a Pick 3. Result: 7/9/4. $18 for every $.50 bet.
  • Race 6: #7 Golden Mischief (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox), won comfortably from the outside post in the $100,000 Saylorville. The 4-year-old filly is 19 8-3-0 and won on the track in her first try.
  • Race 7: #9 Dreamcall (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) has now won three in a row and won the $100,000 Iowa Distaff. The heavily bet Mended, who went off even money, exerted every ounce of energy in a stretch in a duel with Girl Power which set up the finish for a closer. Enter: Dreamcall.

  • Race 8: #4 She's a Julie (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $200,000 Iowa Oaks. The filly won for the 3rd time in 8 starts and second in a row. The rider celebrated a tad too early for my tastes but he won for the third time this evening and the combo with Asmussen was a perfect 2-for-2. Bob Baffert's morning line favorite, who I did not use or intend on using, was scratched.
  • Race 10: Ramon Vazquez won for a fourth time. Trainer Karl Broberg won for the third time. Horses entered were bred in six states including Nebraska and Tennessee.

  • Race 3: The first T-bred race and McLean Robertson was the victor. He has now won 5 of the last 11 races in which he entered horses. That is more along the line of what I expected and stated within a review of the past week.
  • Race 5: McLean Robertson finished 1st-2nd. He ended the evening winning two of the three races in which he entered and 6 of the last 13.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $145,000.
  • Race 9: Jonathan Thomas, former assistant to Todd Pletcher, is now 12 6-2-0 after a gate-to-wire win by Javier Castellano.
  • Race 8: Joe Bravo, in his only ride of the day, was superb with a 6-to-1 winner. Bravo is 7-5-4 in his last 24 starts, close to 30% winners. Excellent streak. The winning trainer John Mazza, based out of Monmouth (New Jersey), won with his first starter at the Belmont meet. He has been training since the 1970s and is 80 years young.
  • Race 3: In the $100,000 feature, Jason Servis improved to 10 8-0-1 in July. Improbable numbers except they are real. Servis has the following numbers at the current meets:
Belmont 33 16-0-4 (48%/61%)
Monmouth 34 19-4-5 (56%/82%)
Delaware 1 1-0-0 (100%/100%)
-------------------------------------------
Totals: 68 36-4-9 (53%/72%)
  • No jockey or trainer won multiple times.
  • Bill Mott has been suspended and after a lengthy battle is in the early stages of serving the 7-day punishment. He originally was suspended 15 days back in 2013 but after legal action, the sides agreed to a reduced sentence. In his place is assistant Leana Willaford.
  • Saturday's card is exxxxxxcellent.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: An 8-year old made his debut. Not too many that age without a race.
  • Race 8: Kelly Rubley is now 16 6-4-1 after a win (38%/69%). Those are strong numbers. The former school teacher has been training for about five years. She also had a second place finish in her other start today.
  • Race 9: Magical (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Trimble) improved to 5 3-1-1. The jockey-trainer, who are engaged to each other, have hit the board in all five starts with Magical. They won for the first time together in March with a first-time starter named Always.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 10: A dead heat for win between a 19-to-1 and a 9-to-1. Reynier Arrieta won for the 3rd time in 86 starts. He rode for his brother Michel who is now 1-for-35 as a trainer in 2018 and was on a 45-race losing streak. The jockey is not a Gulfstream rider, I believe this is his first start at the track. He rides mostly at Fairmont Park, outside St. Louis in Illinois.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $53,000. The $2 Pick 4 was a sensational $40,000+
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Fernando De la Cruz won four times in six starts.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Race 5: Substitution (Robby Albarado/Kelly Von Hemel) won the $70,000 Iowa Stallion Futurity.
  • Race 6: Done Deal (Chris Landeros/Ian Wilkes) won the Iowa Sprint Handicap.
  • Race 7: High North (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $250,000 Iowa Derby. The colt came out of a third place finish in the Grade III Peter Pan (Belmont). The race finished 1-5-6 and a dead heat for 4th with the 3-7. Tight finish, nonetheless. Track announcer "It looked the entire field was coming across the wire..." I had the winner but used him in an exacta with the 4 and 6.
  • Race 8: Remembering Rita (Alex Birzer/Doug Anderson) staged a massive upset at 19-to-1 in the Grade III $300,000 Cornhusker Handicap, the signature race at the track. The win paid $41.50 and the $2 exacta returned $363.60. The win odds were the seventh highest on the board in a field of eight. It could very well be the jockey's biggest win among his 3,100+ career victories. The colt is on a 3-race win streak, after starting his career with eight losses, and is a perfect 3-for-3 at the track. He is also 3-for-3 since the addition of blinkers. Among the defeated was McCracken who ran in the 2017 Kentucky Derby. The only longer shot on the board was Krewe Chief who unseated Chris Landeros at the start. Landeros replaced Tyler Gaffalione who was scheduled to ride three mounts but was replaced on each. Birzer also won the 10th race, the finale on the card.

Evangeline (Louisiana):

  • Karl Broberg, North America's winningest trainer, was a perfect 3-for-3.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Racing was canceled after the second race due to the high temperature.
