June 19, 2018

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Race 1: Accidental Agent (Charles Bishop/Eve Johnson Houghton) pulled a shocker and advanced to the Breeders' Cup in winning the Grade I Queen Anne Stakes. The jockey and trainer both won Royal Ascot races for the first time. The winner paid $84.80. The $2 exacta returned a jaw dropping $1,948. The $1 tri was over $6,000. The purse was worth $874,000.

  • Race 2: Frankie Dettori, riding Calyx for trainer John Gosden, won the Grade 2 Coventry Stakes.
  • Race 3: William Buick, riding Irish-bred Blue Point, won the Grade I King's Stand Stakes
  • Race 4: Frankie Dettori rode Without Parole to victory in the Grade I St James's Palace Stakes for trainer John Gosden.
  • Race 5: Lagostovegas (Andrea Atzeni /Willie Mullins) paid $27.40 in winning the Ascot Stakes Handicap. The trainer had five entered in the race and among those finished 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th.
  • Race 6: Frankie Dettori/John Gosden teamed for a third victory this time in the Listed Stakes. Monarchs Glen paid $15.80. The exacta was $622.60. The $1 tri paid over $13,000.
  • Frankie Dettori was a perfect 3-for-3. In each win he rode for trainer John Gosden.
Presque Isle (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 8: The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot paid out over $45,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $11,000.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Interesting couple days for Keivan Serrano. Yesterday, he rode an 88-to-1 to third place in race 5. Today, he rode a 115-to-1 to 2nd place, a 38-to-1 to second place and a 3-to-1 to the same position. Those were his three rides for the day.
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Trainer Brad Cox was 2-for-2.

Caught three races today and will be working from home tomorrow so I'm going to watch the whole card. Like I said last year, it's a whole different deal than US racing. Really glad NBC expanded the coverage for RA this year.

A quick scan but it appears Frankie Dettori went 3-for-3. Equibase doesn't list international races as such. Now confirmed with the article below. That is phenomenal.

Frankie Dettori seizes centre stage with treble at Royal Ascot

AAySvfI.img

For the second year running, Frankie Dettori was the big news on the opening day of the Royal meeting. The difference this time around was that he could pose for the photographers as well. Twelve months ago Dettori was ruled out for the week a few hours before the first race, but on Tuesday he seized centre stage at his favourite course as only he can.

Calyx and Without Parole, Dettori’s partners for the Coventry Stakes and the St James’s Palace Stakes, were short on experience and stepping into Group-race company for the first time. Both rose to the occasion impressively for their rider and his day was complete when Monarchs Glen took the concluding Wolferton Stakes to conclude an 87-1 treble, from the jockey’s only three rides.

Dettori has now passed Willie Carson to take third place on the all-time list at the Royal meeting with 59 winners stretching back to Markofdistinction’s win in the Queen Anne Stakes in 1990. He is also now a strong favourite to finish the meeting as its leading jockey for the first time since 2004.

“Packing a suitcase to go to Sardinia,” Dettori said, when asked what he had been doing on the same afternoon a year ago. Like any long‑term riding career, Dettori’s has had its disappointments and setbacks, some of which – a six-month ban for failing a drugs test in 2012 being the most obvious – were self-inflicted. But he is approaching his 47th birthday in December promising to ride for another five years and showing every sign that he will stick to it.

============================
Top class jockey Frankie Dettori won three races on opening day at Royal Ascot for trainer John Gosden: the Group 2 Coventry Stakes aboard Calyx, the Group 1 St. James's Palace aboard Without Parole, and the Wolferton Stakes on Monarchs Glen.

After the day's races, the British Horseracing Authority announced that Dettori would be suspended seven days and fined £4,300 for over-use of the whip in his win aboard Without Parole. The suspension will take place from July 3 through July 9, 2018.

Also earning a two-day suspension for whip use in the St. James's Palace Stakes was jockey Donnacha O'Brien, aboard second-place finisher Gustav Klimt.

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Race 1: A bomb opened the second day as Signora Cabello (Oisin Murphy/John Quinn), an Irish-bred, won and paid $68.20 in winning the Grade 2 Queen Mary Stakes. The $2 exacta was over $1,500. The $1 tri was over $12,000.
  • Race 2: Irish-breds finished 1st through third in the Grade 2 Queen's Vase. Each was trained by Aidan O'Brien who has won this race six of the last 12 years. Ryan Moore rode Kew Gardens to the $8.20 win.

  • Race 3: Aljazzi (William Buick/Marco Botti) paid $10.60 in winning the Grade 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes. The trainer won for the first time at Royal Ascot.
  • Race 4: In the $1,000,000+ Prince of Wales Stakes, Poet's Word (James Doyle/Michael Stoute), an Irish-bred, upset 1-to-5 Cracksman ridden by Frankie Dettori and paid $13.20. The trainer established a record with his 76th lifetime win at Royal Ascot.
  • Race 5: Settle For Bay (Billy Lee/David Marnane), a French-bred, won the Royal Hunt Cup Heritage Handicap. The excessive field of 30 was reduced by two scratches. The eight outside runners were listed as an entry and that field was sent off as the 4-to-1 favorite. The race was run on a straight line for one mile. The winning exacta of 21-10 was more comparable to a U.S. football score than a racing one-two.
  • Race 6: Expert Eye (James McDonald/Michael Stoute) paid $20.00 and topped the field of 21 in the Grade 3 Jersey Stakes. The trainer won for the 77th time, a record, at Royal Ascot. The lead horse drifted.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 paid over $23,000. There was $1.3 million added to the pool.
  • Brad Cox won the finale (race 9) with his only starter in North America. The trainer has won 9 of his last 17 starts dating back to June 15 across four tracks: Belmont, Parx, Indiana and Churchill.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 was over $13,000.
  • Race 2: Junior Alvarado went gate-to-wire on a 9-to-1 shot that bolted from the inside gate and never looked back. Speed has been a factor on turf the last few days at Belmont. The 1-1 double both had similar looks.
  • Race 1: Rajiv Maragh, who was off his mounts the most recent racing day, returned and won the opener by 8 1/2 lengths in a gate-to-wire victory from the inside hole.
  • Among the U.S. riders in England are Jose Ortiz, John Velazquez and Joel Rosario.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 8: The exacta was $585.40. The tri was over $3,300. The $2 Pick 4 paid over $4,500. The purse was for $50,000. Graham Motion, the winning trainer, is 11 6-1-1 at the meet (55%/73%).
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Luis Quinones had the natural hat trick tonight. He finished the night 4 3-0-0. Earlier today, he had five starts at Thistledown (Ohio).
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Race 8: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $5,900. The Pick 6 paid out to those who hit three legs; it was that tough to handicap Indiana today.
  • Race 7: A $155,40 winner. The tri paid over $1,500. The Pick 3 paid out to "all" in the third leg. The double was $1,093.20. The occurrence of consecutive doubles more than $1,000 is uncommon but it happened here. The purse was $100,000.
  • Race 6: The $2 Pick 3 was over $6,800. The $2 double was $1,122.80. The purse was $100,000.
  • Race 5: A $75.80 winner. The $2 Pick 4 was over $4,100. The $2 Pick 3 was over $1,600. The $2 trifecta was also over $1,600.
  • Trainer Brandi Steele, a former assistant to Michael Lauer, is out on her own for the first time and is 13 7-2-0 (54%/69%). Impressive numbers.
Evangeline Downs (Louisiana):
  • Timothy Thornton, second sin wins in North America this year, had four victories including a natural hat trick.

Here is one person's preview of the third day at Royal Ascot:

Race-by-race previews (by Chris Cook)
Royal Ascot 2018: Gold Cup day – live!

2.30 Norfolk Stakes Wesley Ward having had a couple of reverses this week, his Shang Shang Shang might be weak in the market and, as a filly, she’d be an unusual winner of this race. Vintage Brut will attract interest, having been sold for £280,000 since winning a good race at Sandown but he might have been a lucky winner, as Konchek had a luckless run in third and might only have needed two more strides to hit the front. Clive Cox’s youngster is the one to be with.

3.05 Hampton Court Stakes In an open race, Silver Quartz might be able to outrun big odds. Seventh place from nine runners on his most recent outing at Sandown does not inspire, on the face of it, but he was going on at the finish after a bit of trouble in running and ended up a mere four lengths behind Without Parole, a Group One winner here on Tuesday. The extra distance on a faster surface will be a big help and he comes from the Hugo Palmer yard that is going well just now.

3.40 Ribblesdale Stakes Having finished runner-up behind a good winner in the Oaks, Wild Illusion is the obvious one here, though the ground here will be very different to the soft going that prevailed that day. One could fret about whether Magic Wand might reverse that form with her in the circumstances. But perhaps Magic Wand’s stablemate Athena has an even better chance, having belatedly blossomed when tried on a sound surface in her two most recent starts. It was only a Fairyhouse maiden that she took last time but her second place to Sea Of Class in May puts her right in the argument and she is going the right way.

4.20 Gold Cup The John Gosden / Frankie Dettori express, which was chugging along very nicely on Tuesday, went slithering off the rails and down a mountainside yesterday. But the Newmarket duo have an excellent chance to get back on track with Stradivarius in this race, highlight of Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot. This flashy chestnut, a winner in this week last year when the ground was similarly quick, started his season on a very encouraging note when scotting clear in the Yorkshire Cup. A strong finisher over two miles in August, he has a fine chance of seeing out this extra half-mile. Order Of St George remains a classy opponent but both he and Vazirabad would probably prefer some give in the ground. One of the outsiders might be able to nick a place here, perhaps even Scotland, who has form on fast ground.

5.00 Britannia Handicap It can’t have been easy for Frankie Dettori to choose between the two Gosden runners here and he may have jumped the wrong way, as Stylehunter won with authority at Lingfield last time. The progressive colt looks handily treated for this handicap debut.

5.35 King George V Handicap A quick look at the mile and a half layout at Ascot would suggest those drawn near the inside rail would have an advantage in big-field handicaps. But results point the other way and no winner of this race has emerged from a single-figure stall since 2010. So the well-bred Dubhe is probably not badly drawn in 19 and he makes a lot of appeal, coming off an impressive handicap win at Sandown that showed he has improved for time and distance.

Put $10 on Shang Shang Shang at RA when the odds started to drop. Saw Rosario was the jockey and said what the hell, he wouldn't be up on a crap horse. Dumb luck and just wanted to say I bet RA. Officially retiring from RA wagering undefeated (1-0).

^ Stradivarius would have been my pick in the Gold Cup. Sent off at 8-to-5 but not the favorite. What a splendid ride by Frankie Dettori. However, I didn't play.

June 21, 2018

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Race 1: Shang Shang Shang (Joel Rosario/Wesley Ward) was victorious in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes. U.S.-based connections won for the first time at the meet. It was Ward's 10th win at Royal Ascot. With the win, Shang Shang Shang received automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup. Rosario has not won in North America since winning the Woody Stephens on Belmont Stakes day. He has a record of 33 0-12-5.

  • Race 2: Hunting Horn (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) won the Grade 3 Hampton Court Stakes. The winner is an Irish-bred. Moore won at Royal Ascot for the 50th time. After the race, Moore said "Having 51 winners would mean a lot more." That happened in the very next race.
  • Race 3: Magic Wand (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) won the Grade 2 Ribblesdale Stakes. The winner is an Irish-bred. The jockey and trainer won for the second consecutive race and third time at the meet. Moore won at Royal Ascot for the 51st time.
  • Race 4: Stradivarius (Frankie Dettori/John Gosden) won the $675,000 2.5 mile Grade I Gold Cup in fine fashion. A terrific ride by Dettori who timed the finish perfectly to nip French-bred Vazirabad. It was the fourth win for the team of Dettori/Gosden. The winner is an Irish-bred, the third straight to win today. Dettori won for the 60th time lifetime at Royal Ascot.

  • Race 5: Ostilio (Silvestre De Sousa/Simon Crisford) won the Grade 2 Britannia Stakes Heritage Handicap and paid $29.80. The winner, the largest win total of the day, was part of the field entry and came out of the 29 hole in a field of 30. The trainer won at Royal Ascot for the first time.
  • Race 6: Baghdad (Andrea Atzani/Mark Johnston), a French-bred, paid $23.60 in winning the 1 1/2 mile King George V Stakes.. Atzani, who hails from Sardinia (Italy), held off a late charge and claimed his first win of the meet.
  • Frankie Dettori (4) and Ryan Moore (3) lead the riders in wins. John Gosden (4) and Aidan O'Brien (3) lead the trainers. Both categories are through three days.
Belmont (New York):
  • Javier Castellano and Irad Ortiz, Jr. each won three times.
  • Jason Servis is now tied for third in wins (13) among trainers. He won with his only starter today. His numbers are fantastic: 26 13-0-3 (50%/62%).
  • Race 9: The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $23,000.
  • Race 6: Three horses were scratched at the gate including two that broke through. Junior Alvarado was unseated following the awkward moment.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • A 12-year old was out for the 143rd time (16-24-34). I don't recall the last time I saw a horse run for the 143rd time in the U.S. The horse finished second-to-last, however was slighly over one length from victory. In Chile earlier this week, a horse was out for the 404th time.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 4: The $.50 Pick 3 neared $1,000.
Race 5: The $2 Penta paid over $40,000. The $2 pick 5 paid over $361,000 (or whatever percentage people bet). They got over $90,000 for a successful $.50 Pick 5. The $2 pick 4 paid out over $36,000. The $2 Pick 3 paid out over $5,300.
  • Race 6: Another $.50 Pick 3 that paid close to $1,000.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won twice and leads the meet with 58 wins. Five jockeys have 50+ wins.
  • Jeffrey Sanchez won twice in five starts. He is 6-1-1 in his last 10 starts. Sanchez returned to racing this year after quitting and not riding in 2017 due to weight issues. He is winning at a 29% clip at the meet and is in the money 625 of the time.
  • Ralph Nicks and Ralph Ziadie each has 15 wins to lead the meet. Perhaps a statistical oddity but numbers 0 through 15 are each represented in the wins column for trainers. Five trainers, including Todd Pletcher, have 14 wins. Two have 13, one has twelve.
Evangeline Downs (Louisiana):
  • Timothy Thornton, second to Irad Ortiz, Jr. in wins this year across North America, was shutout in eight starts. Thornton did manage four seconds and one third.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • The track opened the card with two quarter horse races. Seeing horses bred in North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Missouri pops out. One later race had a Colorado breed.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 5: Faversham (Tiago Pereira/Art Sherman), a brother to California Chrome, broke his maiden in his sixth try and paid $36.40.
  • Race 7: The two longest odds on the board topped a ticket that paid $115 for a $1 exacta.
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid out over $64,000. The $.50 Pick 4 paid out more than $7,000. The distance between first and third was 16 lengths.
Monticello (New York):
  • Race 2: One mention regarding harness racing. The original finish of 42-to-1, 8-to-1, 99-to-1, and 21-to-1 drew some attention. But the placement was altered after a inquiry. The official order became 8-to-1, 99-to-1, 42-to-1 and 21-to-1. Still, stunning numbers especially when a 1-to-9 ran off the board. The show prices were $18.20, $51.50 and $20.80.

Royal Ascot (England):
  • Race 1: Main Edition (James Doyle/Mark Johnston), an Irish-bred, won the Grade 3 Albany Stakes.
  • Race 2: Old Persian (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the Grade 3 $302,000 King Edward VII Stakes.
  • Race 3: Eqtidaar (Jim Crowley/Michael Stoute), an Irish-bred, won the $675,000 Grade I Commonwealth Cup and paid $24.80 in the upset special.

  • Race 4: Alpha Centauri (Colm O'Donoghue/Jessica Harrington) won the Grade I $727,000 Coronation Stakes.

  • Race 5: Agrotera (Jamie Spencer/Ed Walker) won the Sandringham Stakes Fillies Handicap. The loaded field finished 17-21-24 and the payouts shocked the most veteran of viewers. Though the win paid $11.00, runners up both were sent off at 99-to-1 and the subsequent $2 exacta returned $1,621 and the $1 trifecta a stunning $27,600.

  • Race 6: Dash of Spice (Silvestre De Sousa/David Elsworth) won the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes Handicap.
  • Frankie Dettori, winless in the fourth day of racing, leads the jockey standings with 4 wins. Ryan Moore and William Buick each have three victories. John Gosden (4), Aidan O'Brien (3) and Michael Stoute (3) top the trainer's standings.
Belmont (New York):
  • Days like today make racing extra entertaining from the perspectives of both handicapping and enthusiast. The card was anything but enormous and could have been called unremarkable yet it was exciting as the day transpired.
  • Race 9: Junior Alvarado was sensational in winning the finale at 7-to-1. The $.50 Pick 5 was over $50,000. The $.50 Pick 4 was over $19,000.
  • Race 8: A fourth photo finish for the win. Luis Saez won at 8-to-1. The $1 Pick 3 paid a hair under $4,000.
  • Race 7: A third photo finish for the win. The $1 exacta paid $147.50. Joe Bravo, in his only ride of the day, took a 5-to-1 who had been off since September 2016, to victory. Jonathan Thomas trainer had a 44% win mark off long layoffs. The runner up, at 24-to-1, was off since October. Joe Bravo: Have Whip Will Travel.
  • Race 6: Luis Saez had a $35.00 winner. Another photo finish for the win.
  • Race 5: Mike Luzzi finished with a furious rally to finish second. He has not won his last 27 starts but finished strongly for second on two mounts today.
  • Race 4: The high profiled connections of Javier Castellano, Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables had a 2nd-time starter break through the gate and of course caused concern. That is never a good sign and the heavily bet runner offered little during the race.
  • Race 2: Photo finish for the win with Javier Castellano on top.
  • Race 1: Mike Luzzi finished second with the longest shot on the board, a good rally with a first time starter that paid $9,50 in the middle.
  • Luis Saez had two winners, $21.60 and $35.00. Jose Ortiz also won twice. Trainer Linda Rice had two victories.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 10: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $3,400.
  • Race 8: A 70-to-1 nearly pulled a shocker but was caught in the stretch and finished second. The $1 tri returned over $2,200. The $.10 super paid out$2,500+.
  • Race 7: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $5,200. Taylor Hole, who doesn't have many mounts but is a god veteran rider, had a 12-to-1 morning line reduced early to 2-to-1 and then went off at 7-to-1. It was another great finish today. The $2 exacta paid $231.40 and bug rider Weston Hamilton nearly had the upset at 28-to-1. Hamilton has won just once in his last 30 starts.
  • Race 3: After a lengthy review due to an objection/inquiry, the 6 topped the 9 in what was an awesome finish. The victory was the first of the meet for Kevin Gomez who ended the day with a mark of 37 1-5-7. He is 5 4-1-0 at Delaware.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: The race stayed on the turf despite torrential rains just prior to the start.
  • Race 3: Jeffrey Sanchez, mentioned in a prior review, won for trainer Carlo Vaccarezza who had one starter. Sanchez is 70 20-9-12 (29%/59%) this year after a semi-retirement from racing in 2017 due to weight issues.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Hall-of-Fame trainer Carl Nafzger, who is for all intents-and-purposes retired, had his first starter of 2018 but finished in last place.
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. leads the meet with 38 wins. He won twice today.
  • The entire horse racing world felt a blow when it was announced that Shantel Lanerie, the wife to jockey Corey, passed away with cancer.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Richard Eramia had four victories. He won three times for trainer Karl Broberg.
  • Race 7: Lane Luzzi won at 17-to-1 with the largest win price of the night. Five of the eight races were won by favorites.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: In a $75,000 purse, 6-year-old mare Vale Dori (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert), who has amassed over $1.1 million, dropped to third and looked tired. She is now 19 9-5-1 lifetime but has lost her last five races. She also has missed the board in three straight after beginning her career in the money 15 of 16.
Note:
  • Karl Broberg, who has more wins than any other trainer in North America this year, won at four tracks and finished 12 6-3-1. He won at tracks in Minnesota, Iowa, Louisiana and Texas.

[TBODY][TR][TH]June 23, 2018Royal Ascot (England):
  • Attendance estimated at 300,000 for the five-day meet.
  • Race 1: The final day began with an extraordinary story in the Chesham Stakes. Arthur Kitt (Richard Kingcote/Tom Dascombe) mirrored his Royal Ascot-winning dam Ceiling Kitty in victory; she died while foaling this colt. The trainer won at Royal Ascot for the fifth time lifetime. The winner was 7-to-1 in the U.S.
  • Race 2: A small field of five entered in the $304,000 Grade 2 Hardwicke Stakes run a at 1 1/2 miles and the favored Crystal Ocean (Ryan Moore/Michael Stoute) won with relative comfort. Both trainer and jockey won for the fourth time in this Royal Ascot which is tied for the lead in each category. Stoute has won more Royal Ascot races lifetime than any other trainer.
  • Race 3: Soldier's Call (Daniel Tudhope/ArcieWatson) won in a field of 28 entered in the Windsor Castle Stakes. The rare 20-19 exacta paid $541.20 with a $40.00 winner. The $1 tri paid over $6,000.
  • Race 4: Merchant Navy (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien), an Australian-bred, won the $810,000 Grade I Diamond Jubilee Stakes. The win received an automatic berth into the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
  • Race 5: Bacchus (James Crowley/Brian Meehan) won the $236,500 Wokingham Stakes Heritage Classic with 28 entered and paid a fantastic $94.00. The $2 exacta was $411.20. The $1 tri was over $15,000.
  • Race 6: Pallasator (Jamie Spencer/Gordon Elliott) won the Queen Alexandra Stakes. The runner up was a French-bred ridden by Andrea Atzeni who paid $25.00. The $2 exacta paid $517.60.
  • MOST WINS AT THE MEET: Ryan Moore's five wins was the most among the jockeys. Frankie Dettori followed with four. Michael Stoute, Aidan O'Brien and John Gosden each had four wins among trainers.

Nice touch by many tracks across the nation to have jockeys and other personnel gather to offer support for Corey Lanerie after he lost his wife Shantel to cancer yesterday. She was 42. Corey Lanerie is a hardworking, good rider and by all accounts a good person. To lose someone so precious at a young age is disheartening. Best wishes sent. Ron Paolucci donated a percentage of his purse winnings to a foundation, too, as he said prior to the Ohio Derby. I am sure many others contributed in some fashion.

back to racing...

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 5: An inquiry put Mike Luzzi up to the victory following a review by the stewards. When was the last time that happened?! Manny Franco initially won the race but was declared a non-starter for breaking early. Luzzi finally caught a break and at 11-to-1 whis is almost low considering some of the odds he rides. Luzzi's losing streak which included some decent finishes in the money as mentioned above is now history.
  • The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $33,000.
  • Jose Ortiz won three times. He is second in the meet's standings, four behind his brother Irad.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 2: A 67-to-1 paid $137.20. The $.50 tri paid over $2,100.
  • Race 8: The victory was by more than 13 lengths. An old-fashioned whoopin'.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Carol Cedeno had four wins including a natural hat trick. She leads the rider standings with 15 victories.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 9: Victor Carrasco won for the first time since September. He has eight starts in 2018. He has recently returned following rehab to a broken leg.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Core Beliefs (Joe Talamo/Peter Eurton) won the $500,000 Ohio Derby at 5-to-2, his second victory in six lifetime starts. He ran his first four races at Santa Anita before the Peter Pan at Belmont. He has a mark of 6 2-1-3.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Miguel Vasquez won three times and is now tied for second place at the meet with 55 wins, three behind leading jockey Tyler Gaffalione.
  • The carryover for the Rainbow Six will begin at $755,000+.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • The $.20 Pick Six Jackpot paid in excess of $33,000.
  • Race 8: My key race of the day was the $100,000 Grade III Chicago Handicap. I hit the $1 trifecta by using four horses, the 2-5-7-11, which is deeper than I usually dabble. The race finished 7-5-2-11. I felt comfortable with the picks but the risky investment was a worthwhile endeavor. The return was $100 for a $1 wager. The #2 was a California horse and they ship well. The #5 was 5 4-0-0 at Arlington. The #7 was once trained by McLean Robertson (now by his father Hugh) who has shown improvement in every race in 2018. The #11 was 7 5-1-0 at Arlington and bet down from 10-to-1 morning line to the favorite. As it turned out, the #7 was fine tuned to perfection and won convincingly. Hotshot Anna (Harry Hernandez/Thomas Swearingen) was sent off at 4-to-1 and won by more than five lengths. The rider won a graded stakes race for the first time. The trainer won for just the fourth time this year.
HOTSHOT-ANNA-The-Chicago-Handicap-G3-29th-Running-06-23-18-R08-AP-Finish-2.jpg

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • One of the track's signature cards with five stakes races.
  • Race 3: I'm Betty G (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes. Adam Beschizza, riding for Joe Sharp, finished second.
  • Race 4: My Bariley (Hugo Sanchewz/Anthony Granitz) tracked down Hay Dakota. A 1-11 $1 exacta paid $196.80.
  • Race 5: Sniper Kitten (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby. Journeyman rider James Graham rode a 42-to-1 Eric Heitzmann 3-year-old to second place. The 41 exacts paid $138.80. A deep field of 13.
  • Race 6: Creative Art (James Graham/Shawn Davis) won the $50,000 Dark Star Cup Stakes. Graham won for the 2,322nd in his life with the second longest shot on the board at 12-to-1. Creative Art won for the 16th time in 70 lifetime starts. The 8-year-old Illinois-bred had been running at Turf Paradise in Arizona but likes the surface in Minnesota as he is 4 3-0-1 lifetime. Davis, the trainer, won for the 300th time.
  • Race 7: Puntsville won the $50,000 Host Her Flag in a small field.
  • McLean Robertson is one of my top trainers. He is 10 3-0-5 with his last 10 starters. Good, not sensational but that depends on how he is played.
  • Robertino Diodoro, who trails only Karl Broberg and Steve Asmussen among trainers' wins in 2018, was not only 0-for-11 he hit the board just once.
Louisiana Downs (Louisiana):
  • Jockey Joel Dominguez won six times among seven races. He began the night by winning the first five races, finished third in the sixth and then won the finale in race 7. The last two days of racing, he is a total of 11 8-1-1.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Lane Luzzi won the opener for the third time in the last four cards. He has won six of his last 20 rides.
  • Richard Eramia/Karl Broberg teamed to go 5 2-3-0.
Santa Anita (California):
  • SUNDAY IS CLOSING DAY: $821,858 Pick 6 Carryover With Mandatory Payout. Southern Cal racing then focuses on other tracks.
    • Los Alamitos runs June 28 through July 15.
    • Del Mar runs July 18 through September 3.
    • Back to Los Alamitos for a September 6 through September 23 meet.
    • Santa Anita returns September 26 and runs through November 6.
  • Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was a magnificent 5 4-0-0. Two wins came with bug Asa Espinoza.
  • Race 11: American Anthem (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) won the $250,000 Grade II San Carlos at 4-to-5. The longest shot on the board came in second place at 42-to-1.

Woodbine (Canada):
  • The $.20 Super High Five Jackpot paid out over $72,000.
  • Race 8: Shahroze (Alan Garcia/Graham Motion) won the 1 1/2 mile Singspiel Stakes. The Irish-bred entered after a win at Belmont last month.

Belmont (New York):
  • Junior Alvarado culminated an excellent week with a 3-win day. He was 6 3-0-2 today. He won 7 out of 27 beginning with June 17.
  • Race 10: One of the best stretch battles of the week as Junior Alvarado nosed out Jose Ortiz in a rousing duel.

  • Race 7: In a race limited to New York breds, the Ortiz brothers finished 1st and 2nd and the sire Cosmonaut did the same.
  • Race 6: In Junior Alvarado's second win, odds changed dramatically near post: from 9-to-2, to 7-to-2, to 5-to-2 to 2-to-1. A good bet was stunted by the late drop in odds.

  • Jose Ortiz won twice and had multiple wins on three straight cards. He closed the gap in the meet's riding standing to three behind his brother Irad.
  • Three trainers who have strong numbers: Jason Servis 27 14-0-3, Brad Cox 27 10-3-2 and Jonathan Thomas 10 5-2-0.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 12: The $2 Pick 5 returned more than $32,000.
  • Race 11: An odd moment when 54-year-old jockey Jose Ferrer was unseated near the starting gate prior to the race which caused a lengthy delay in search for a replacement rider. Ferrer, who is tied with Paco Lopez for the meet lead in wins, was hospitalized as a precaution but deemed OK following an evaluation.
  • Race 10: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $4,400. There were horses that ranged in age from 3 to 10. The least experienced of the lot won in his third outing. The 10-year-old was out for the 73rd time.
  • Race 8: The winner paid $104.60. The $2 exacta was $868.80. The $2 tri was over $2,900. The $1 super returned over $15,000. The $2 Pick 3 paid over $3,800. The $2 double was $1,097.
  • Trainer Jorge Navarro, who leads the meet in victories, was winless in four starts.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Kevin Gomez won three times in four starts and improved his meet record to 42 4-5-9. He was winless in his first 36 rides. For the week, including rides at Delaware, he was in the money 100% of the time at 11 6-2-3.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: The $2 Pick 4 paid an incredible $52,099.20. The $2 double was $1,170.60.
  • Race 9: A $69.20 winner. The $2 Pick 3 paid $3,435.20.
  • Race 7: What a finish! The longest shot on the board nipped the favorite. Races like this don't need any financial involvement to be of interest.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Mitchall Murrill won three times with five starts. He is one of the few jockeys who hails from Alabama.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 11: I really like Bella Vincenza. She is now 24 6-7-1 and fights. Under the direction of Luca Panici, she won for the second straight time and is a superb 7 4-3-0 in 2018.
  • Race 8: The $2 Pick 4 paid over $4,500.
  • Race 6: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $7,000. The $2 tri returned more than $1,700.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid $65,629.80 The $2 Pick 4 paid $59,571.20.
  • Race 4: The $2 Pick 3 paid over $8,800. An 18-to-1 won the race.
  • Race 2: A 25-to-1 set the tone for much of the early part of the day.
  • The $.20 Pick 6 carryover for the next card will begin in excess of $800,000.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Good job by Lane Luzzi with three wins today in six rides. I mentioned in yesterday's review about his recent propensity for winning openers. It happened again today which now makes four times in the last five cards. Lone Star is the type of track he needed to gain experience. His father was the Apprentice of the Year in 1989 -- a year that featured Garrett Gomez and Joe Bravo. I thought younger Luzzi would be awarded as Apprentice of 2016 while riding in East coast tracks but that attempt was derailed partly by injury.
Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 3 paid close to $5,000.
  • Race 4: The $2 Pick 4 paid $11,955. The $2 Pick 3 paid over $10,000. The $2 double returned $648.60.
  • Race 3: The $2 trifecta paid over $1,500.
  • Rocco Bowen, the leading rider at the meet, won three times including race 4 in which he was put up after a DQ with the longest set of odds on the board at 11-to-1.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Over $1,000,000,000 (one billion dollars) was bet at the meet which closed today. The meet had 102 days of racing and began in late December. Today saw over $18,000,000 bet. California racing was hurting slightly which was a reason why Tim Ritvo of Stronach/Gulfstream (Florida) relocated west to boost the presence.
  • Mandatory payout in the $2 pick 6. Each winner -- there were 208 -- received $20,255. Handicappers added $5,200,182 to the pot today. Santa Anita is dark until September. The southern Cal racing schedule is listed in yesterday's review. Onto Los Alamitos.
  • Jerry Hollendorfer was a perfect 2-for-2. This closing weekend, the trainer was a combined 7 6-0-0 on Saturday and Sunday. Brilliant numbers.
  • In the only graded stakes race in the U.S.A. today, Storm the Hill (Rafael Bejarano/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Grade III Wilshire Stakes. The winner paid $21.

Woodbine (Ontario):

  • Norman McKnight, who led the last meet in wins, won twice today and trails leader Mark Casse by two victories, 36 to 34. McKnight has 52 less starters. His winning percentage is 39 and his percentage in the money is 70.
Note:
  • Jason Servis is having a tremendous 2018. He is 177 56-33-26 (32%/65%). Combined at the current meets of Belmont (NY) and Monmouth (NJ), he is 53 27-4-7 (51%/72%) which includes 27 14-0-3 at Belmont and 26 13-4-4 at Monmouth. Those numbers are awesome.

Jockey of the Week is open especially without many larger purses run this week. JoeTalamo won the Ohio Derby but didn't have too much else. Louisiana is a smaller venue but a rider winning six times on one card is nearly history-making at many ovals. I don't see a front runner.

UPDATE:

^ Tyler Gaffalione won Jockey of the Week. The selection was open as indicated by "several jockeys..."

Gaffalione Shines At Canterbury For Jockey Of The Week Title - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

One of only several jockeys to win multiple stakes last week, and on a night dedicated to raising money for disabled jockeys, Tyler Gaffalione was named Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week title for June 18 – 24, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America's #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

On Saturday, Canterbury Park hosted the Mystic Lake Northern Stars Racing Festival, a night of five stakes worth $500,000, including the premier stakes race of the meet, the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby. That night, Canterbury also hosted this year's Jockeys and Jeans event, an annual fundraiser for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

Belmont Park (New York):
  • The $2 pick 6 paid out over $20,000.
  • Jose Ortiz won three times. He now trails his brother Irad by two wins at the meet for the lead.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Carol Cedeno rode three more winners to increase her meet lead to eight with 19 victories.
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Nearly $200,000 was added to the Rainbow Six pool. The carryover for Friday's card is above $848,000. The meet closes Saturday. We could be looking at a mandatory payout day.
  • Leaders at the meet:
Jockeys:
Tyler Gaffalione 60
Miguel Vasquez 57
Emisael Jaramillo 56
Edgard Zayas 55
Nik Juarez 54

Trainers:

Oscar Gonzalez 16
Victor Barboza 16
Six with 15
Two with 14
Peter Walder 13
Two with 12.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):

  • Florent Geroux, Shaun Bridgmohan and Ricardo Santana, Jr. won twice each, all within the first six races.
  • Race 8: Adam Beschizza snapped an 18-race skid with a win.
  • Corey Lanerie, second in wins at the meet, is off his mounts tonight. His wife's funeral was today (info above in an earlier post).
Arlington Park (Illinois):
  • Race 6: The winner paid $46. The $.50 tri was over $1,000. The winning trainer, Al Ali whose daughter is one of the track handicappers/reporters, began the year 0-for-18 but has won with his last two starters. He is 2-for-20 in 2018 and has 69 lifetime wins, training since 1988 per Equibase.
  • Jose Valdivia, Jr., who won last year's meet by an improbable 83 victories, added two more wins to increase his lead this year to 17.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Race 4: The $.50 trifecta paid over $3,300.
Arizona Downs (Arizona):
  • A new simulcast facility is being constructed and to be opened next month. Live racing at the track, once known as Yavapai Downs, is expected to return in 2019.
Notes:
  • Richard Eramia, who is ninth in wins in North America this year, is serving a week-long suspension and does not have mounts again until July 1. He rides at Lone Star among other places.
  • Edgard Zayas returns from a lengthy suspension with mounts at Gulfstream tomorrow (July 29). He last ride June 17.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 5: Mike Luzzi won one of his two rides.
  • Race 6: Princess Mikayah (Talbert Howell/Eskei Beech) won with a 20-to-1 morning line bet down to 6-to-1. What made the result even more surprising is the jockey was on a 61-race losing streak going back to 2016, the trainer snapped a 27-race losing streak at Finger Lakes earlier this week (has now won two in a row) and the horse was 0-for-12 lifetime and hit the board just once.
  • Race 7: Joe Bravo won his only ride of the day and paid $14.60 with a very playable horse. The winner has a very nice lifetime mark of 20 5-4-8. Being in the money 17 times in 20 starts is noteworthy. Bravo is 11 5-1-1 since June 23. He is 23% (wins) and 50% (in the money) in 2018, two figures above his career averages.
  • Race 9: Junior Alvarado won for the second time today. He was the only jockey (or trainer) to win multiple times today. Alvarado has won five of his last 11 starts.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Edgar Prado won the opener and Mario Pino the finale. The riders have close to 14,000 lifetime wins between them.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Emisael Jaramillo won three times and is now in second place among riders' wins entering the meet's final weekend. Jaramillo won his first three mounts which came by the fourth race. The standings:
Tyler Gaffalione 62
Emisael Jaramillo 59
Migueal Vasquez 57
Edgard Zayas 55
Nik Juarez 54
  • Victor Barboza (17) has a one-win lead over Todd Pletcher (16) among trainers. Ten trainers have 14 or more wins.
  • Race 6: Incredible Grace (Tyler Gaffalione/Todd Pletcher) won her maiden race by more than two lengths and perhaps is worthy of following. Pletcher finished 1st and 2nd in the race.
  • Race 7: Jagr won for the fifth time in 15 career starts. Jagr is now trained by French-born Yvon Belsoeur and owned by Canadian Bruno Schickedanz.
  • Race 9: The $1 super was $18,000+. The winner was 22-to-1 but that almost pales in comparison to the 156-to-1 shot that finished fourth.
  • The carryover for the $.20 Rainbow Six will be $898,654 for a mandatory giveaway. It surpassed $1,000,000 today and will easily reach that mark tomorrow.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 3: Instragrand (Drayden Van Dyke/Jerry Hollendorer), who was purchased for $1,500,000, won his debut race by more than 10 lengths. The 2-year-old colt opened at 1-to-9 and went off at 2-to-5. He was an 8-to-5 morning line. Needless to say, many eyes were watching and he impressed mightily in round one.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 4: Bettors hoping a bomb comes under the favorite in an exacta had to be ecstatic when a 92-to-1 placed. The $2 exacta was $244
Note:
  • While some of New York's top riders (Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr., John Velazquez, Javier Castellano, Joel Rosario, Luis Saez) are headed elsewhere, Mike Smith is among the visiting riders. Smith will ride for Steve Asmussen in the Mother Goose but he also has two mounts for Chad Brown. I don't recall that pairing in the past though I could be missing an obvious one.
  • Luis Saez should have a successful day Saturday at Gulfstream.
