It is true, if any team is playing with house money it is the Pens. Two cups in the bank, three to five years to add to the total.

But I am greedy, I want more.

It's like money, if you had some or lots you want more. But can never get tired of stanley cups.

So then the Penguins have to go out and sign or trade for another Top 4 defenseman, all while guys like Guentzel, Rust, Hornqvist, etc. have their contracts expire and get raises.

Bad. Asset. Management.

Maatta is 22, under contract for the next five years, and is very likely to improve. Trading him for a 3rd line center and signing Markov is just bad. Bad. Bad. Bad.

Lol, Hypothetically, If Maatta was moved in a trade for a 3C, signing Markov for a year to replace Maatta's spot in the line up is not poor asset management at all. And Markov isn't "bad bad bad".

But you don't need to move Maatta to get a third line center. You can get one without moving him.

Markov is 38, wants a 2-year deal at $6 million. If you get him down to one year, he'll likely want to stick as close to a $6 million hit as possible.

So now you're paying a guy who is 16 years older than Maatta, paying him $2 million more than Maatta...and you have to replace that spot the following year when you have a ton of other expiring contracts.

That's the definition of bad asset management.

Leafs don't HAVE to make a move, as Horton will go back on LTIR. But maybe Bozak is available now.

First, it is a hypothetical.
Second, you are not accounting for the center we would get, and need.
Third, you are assuming we would pay Markov at 2x6. That is what he asked from the Habs. The Habs might not be able to afford him at that. My scenario would be a one year deal at 4.
Fourth, and most importantly, we would be better equipped to threepeat.

Marleau becomes the Leafs highest paid player by about a million.

Not really surprise about Marleau contract. It was going to take them a lot of money to get him there. I bet they initially made a similar offer to Thornton but he turned them down to say in SJ.
