The guys affected by the qualifying offer debacle were Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer. Of those guys, Barker had already been traded at the 2009-10 trade deadline, Johnson had been traded even earlier in the 2009-10 season and Versteeg, Fraser and Eager were all traded during the big salary dump in 2010. Troy Brouwer was the only player from that group that remained with Chicago for the 2010-2011 season and he was making $1.025M per season

The qualifying offer problem did not put the Blackhawks into cap hell. Even after getting rid of all of the players who hadn't been properly submitted qualifying offers, except for a guy making a million dollars a year, Chicago still had to cut bait on a lot of other players

Chicago will have $64.641M committed to 14 players (8F, 4D, 2G). Contracts they could shed are Bickell ($4M hit, 2 yrs left, 9 Mil real salary) and Sharp ($5.9M hit, 2 yrs left, 10.5 mil real salary). In order for them to fill their roster, resign RFAs, it's almost a forgone conclusion that they will have to move one if not two of their higher contract guys.

Kings are in a tricky situation with the Voynov litigation. With his contract still in place, the Kings will have $64.115 committed to 17 players (10F, 6D, 1G). The Voynov contract is a $4.167 cap hit for 4 more years, 19.5M in real salary left to be paid. Richards hit is $5.75 for 5 more years, $22M in real salary left to be paid.

Tampa will have $66.929M committed to 19 players (11F, 6D, 2G). Mattias Ohlund (3.607) will count against their cap over the summer, but will go on LTIR as soon as the season starts so his numbers won't be factored in. I'm pretty sure they could bury Drouin's contract in the minors if they wanted to start him off in the AHL to start the year, but they're going to be running into trouble in the next few years. Stamkos is up next year; Kiilorn, Kucherov, Paquette, and Coburn will be up next year as well.

Will definitely be an interesting next 2-3 offseasons, especially with the future cap numbers in flux. Hopefully our management group sees the potential landmines and works their way around them in the next coming years

Reinhart is a bust now?

For a few fans .... He will be a bust if he's not pouring in 70+ points a year without exception.

Injuries won't matter
Role won't matter
Line mates won't matter
Coaching won't matter

The vast majority will have reasonable, logical benchmarks before a whisper of disappointment is uttered. Let alone a bust.

In Tampa's case it's just a very good team with lots of young players coming together at the same time. It could potentially happen to Buffalo as well. If guys like Bailey, Baptiste and Fasching/Compher break into the league around the same time it's going to make the cap tight sooner rather than later.

Tampa is in a good situation to have. They also show you how early Stanley Cup windows open up. If all goes to plan then 2017/2018 may be Buffalo's first season with cup aspirations.

The funny thing about Edmonton winning McDavid is that although Edmonton will be a threat for the next 10+ years they are a team that needs to be gearing up not just to make the playoffs but to make a deep run as early as next season. A lot of Edmonton fans want to say how when Nurse develops Edmonton will have a balanced line up but they can't wait that long. If they want to have a bottom 6, some defensemen and a goalie then they aren't going to be able to have all of those high end forwards forever.

Like Tallon not correctly submitting qualifying offers which caused him to sign his RFAs to millions more than the should have in 2009 which put Chicago in cap hell for 2010.

That's not what led to it.

Doak brought this ups few weeks ago in a previous roster speculation thread and this was my response........

Eight players were impacted by that mistake and the following are their contracts

Versteeg --> 3yrs @ 3.083mil per year (2yrs left summer 2010
Barker ----> 3yrs @ 3mil per (2yrs left)
Bickell -----> 1yr @ 500k (RFA)
Eager ------> 1yr @ 965k (RFA)
Fraser -----> 1yr @ 700k (RFA)
Brouwer ---> 2yrs @ 1mil per (1 year left summer 2010)
A. Johnson -> 1yr @ 540k (UFA summer 2010)
Crawford ---> 2yrs @ 850k (1 year left)

None of those contracts are of any consequence except Versteeg and Barker. And Barker was already gone in Feb and not a factor in the purge in the summer of 2010.

Now the changes to Kane, Toews, Keith and Hammer's deals.

Kane went from 3.75mil a cap hit (ELC + bonuses) to 6.3mil (2.55mil)
Toews went from 2.8mil (ELC+ bonuses) to 6.3mil (increase of 3.5mil)
Keith went from 1.475mil to a cap hit of 5.551mil (increase of 4.076mil)
Hjalmarsson from 645k (ELC) to 3.44mil (increase of 2.795mil)

These four anchors of their Cup winning team were going to take up almost 13mil more (12.921mil to be exact) in cap space than they did the year before.

Guys traded by the Hawks that summer
-Versteeg (2yrs left @3.083mil per
-Sopel (1yrs left @ 2mil)
-Byfuglien (1yr left @ 3mil)
-Ladd (RFA that summer)
-Fraser (RFA that summer)

Guys let go as they become free agents
-Madden
-Burish

-The Hawks also walked away from an arbitration award to Niemi of 2.75mil. He became a free agent and signed with San Jose.
-The Hawks also arranged to bury Huet and his contract in Europe to get out from under his 5.625mil cap hit.

Thats 9 players removed from the Cup winning roster in order to get under the cap. Two were easy (Burish/Madden) since they left as UFAs. The other 7 were good players they had to move. Most were good young players that were contributors to the Hawks success. The guys making peanuts on those 1 and 2 year deals from the QO snafu were not the reason the roster was purged. It was to accommodate the top players on the team and the 13mil jump they were going to cost the team. The only player from the QO snafu that was even an issue was Versteeg and he was traded. His 3mil cap hit was relative peanuts in the grand scheme that summer.

Will fix everything
Maybe but the Bruins traded Boychuck so anything is possible for the right offer. Especially if we take back a cap dump like Versteeg or Bickel.

Versteeg is actually a pretty decent bargain since FLA retained salary.

Bickell has some sort of NMC/NTC.

I wouldn't mind Bickell but somebody of Kane/Moulson/Foligno would have to move to the right side or be traded.

That's why identifying a core and sticking to it is important. That's how Chicago managed to get back to the stop despite purging off significant pieces. I imagine Eichel, Reinhart, Kane, and Girgenson will be the guys they stick to up front no matter what whereas guys like Ennis, Moulson, Foligno, and the wingers in the system get cycled through and traded off when we get into trouble. Another reason why constantly restocking the cupboard is so important.

Bettman: “The system we have accounts for the Canadian dollar.” Cap projection now is around $71 million if C$ stays around .80 US$. from Jesse Spector

Toffoli, Tarasenko and Saad all day before the others. Kuznetsov and Galchenyuk to follow-up the rear. However, lets be realistic, there's not a realistic number that would work to get these guys. It's an automatic match. We're not going to give up 2016 1st round picks when the Sabres even with improvements could be at the hopefully end of the lottery.

Logical thinking - but I wonder if Murray is even allowing for the possibility. He's been pretty emphatic in forecasting a more competitive team next season and willing to mortgage some of the draft picks / prospects to do so. I get the sense that he expects to at least compete for the playoffs albeit maybe not make them so he may not be concerned over their lottery standing next season, especially with the frustration he feels currently over being deprived of the 1st pick in consecutive drafts despite their standing.
