Like Tallon not correctly submitting qualifying offers which caused him to sign his RFAs to millions more than the should have in 2009 which put Chicago in cap hell for 2010.
That's not what led to it.
Doak brought this ups few weeks ago in a previous roster speculation thread and this was my response........
Eight players were impacted by that mistake and the following are their contracts
Versteeg --> 3yrs @ 3.083mil per year (2yrs left summer 2010
Barker ----> 3yrs @ 3mil per (2yrs left)
Bickell -----> 1yr @ 500k (RFA)
Eager ------> 1yr @ 965k (RFA)
Fraser -----> 1yr @ 700k (RFA)
Brouwer ---> 2yrs @ 1mil per (1 year left summer 2010)
A. Johnson -> 1yr @ 540k (UFA summer 2010)
Crawford ---> 2yrs @ 850k (1 year left)
None of those contracts are of any consequence except Versteeg and Barker. And Barker was already gone in Feb and not a factor in the purge in the summer of 2010.
Now the changes to Kane, Toews, Keith and Hammer's deals.
Kane went from 3.75mil a cap hit (ELC + bonuses) to 6.3mil (2.55mil)
Toews went from 2.8mil (ELC+ bonuses) to 6.3mil (increase of 3.5mil)
Keith went from 1.475mil to a cap hit of 5.551mil (increase of 4.076mil)
Hjalmarsson from 645k (ELC) to 3.44mil (increase of 2.795mil)
These four anchors of their Cup winning team were going to take up almost 13mil more (12.921mil to be exact) in cap space than they did the year before.
Guys traded by the Hawks that summer
-Versteeg (2yrs left @3.083mil per
-Sopel (1yrs left @ 2mil)
-Byfuglien (1yr left @ 3mil)
-Ladd (RFA that summer)
-Fraser (RFA that summer)
Guys let go as they become free agents
-Madden
-Burish
-The Hawks also walked away from an arbitration award to Niemi of 2.75mil. He became a free agent and signed with San Jose.
-The Hawks also arranged to bury Huet and his contract in Europe to get out from under his 5.625mil cap hit.
Thats 9 players removed from the Cup winning roster in order to get under the cap. Two were easy (Burish/Madden) since they left as UFAs. The other 7 were good players they had to move. Most were good young players that were contributors to the Hawks success. The guys making peanuts on those 1 and 2 year deals from the QO snafu were not the reason the roster was purged. It was to accommodate the top players on the team and the 13mil jump they were going to cost the team. The only player from the QO snafu that was even an issue was Versteeg and he was traded. His 3mil cap hit was relative peanuts in the grand scheme that summer.
