Key matchup: Morgan Rielly vs. Jack Eichel.
As both teams improve over the next few seasons, this matchup will become ever more important. The Leafs will rely heavily on Rielly in all key situations, including playing against the best players on the other team. Eichel, a rookie, leads Buffalo with 19 goals and has taken over lately as the Sabres’ No. 1 centre.
Need to know: The Sabres are 1-6 in shootouts . . . Eichel is second in rookie scoring with 44 points, 15 back of Chicago’s Artemi Panarin . . . Eichel and Sam Reinhart (30) are the first two Sabres rookies with 30 or more points since current Wild forwards Thomas Vanek (48) and Jason Pominville (30) did it in 2005-2006 . . .
