I thought first that we should just pair him with Severson- that it was obvious he'd be the balance the guy needed -

But maybe we pair him 1st pairing with Subban to really eat minutes - and see if he can recapture something of his true value. We have Subban for 2 years and Severson for 3 at current contracts - and we probably can't dump Subban...

Murray - Subban
? - Severson
Smith/Butcher - ?
Carrick

I don't think Smith is ready for 2nd pair left side - I don't know if Butcher can really be 2nd pairing guy either.
I'd love it if we picked up one or two more stable Dmen - Tanev, Hamonic, Gudas, Shattenkirk or Schultz even.. but they all shoot right...

but maybe the way to go is through another cap dump trade... somehow thief Ethan Bear or Sergachev...

Given that Butcher has played both sides in the past then maybe we should just ride with a bottom pairing of Smith - Butcher?

Look at the guesses in the official trade thread. Palms, two 2nds, or Zacha.
I just read that first page...

I like this move a lot.

At first I got confused with Jack Johnson lol that would've been bad

Health is obviously a big concern for this guy but holy smoke, I didn't expect us to get an actual quality defenseman for basically nothing.

Good trade. Excited to see what he can do when he's healthy. So what's the extent of his back injuries? Spasms? Chronic pain? Paralyzed?

Disc injury.

“We dealt with it differently this time,” Murray said.
Murray and Blue Jackets head athletic trainer Mike Vogt traveled to see a doctor in Canada, one who specializes in the body’s core muscles and has studied extensively the interconnected mechanics of the back.
After he examined Murray and studied his long history of injury, there was good news and bad news.
The bad news: Murray’s back will need to be a daily priority — repeated exercise and stretches, proper moving and lifting techniques, etc. — for the rest of his life, not just for the rest of his playing career. At 26 years old, he has the back of a much older man.
The good news: Doctors don’t see any reason why Murray, if he keeps up with the daily exercises, shouldn’t be able to play regularly and sustain a long career.
Murray won’t be doing some of the same strenuous workouts as the rest of the Blue Jackets, but he’s spent the last two months doing daily workouts to build up his core muscles and to help relieve stress on the lower back area where the affected disk resides.
In the morning, when he’s just out of bed. In the afternoon, say, after practice. In his hotel room on the road. Each night before bed.
“It’s going to be constant. You have to keep up with your body,” Murray said. “It’s an everyday thing now, and you have to take care of it. For me, it’s thinking about the rest of my life, too, not just hockey.

Doing a little more reading up on Murray, and man, I really feel for the guy. What a tough go for a long time. I hope this is a turning point, things work out and we can re-sign him to a fair deal.

It'd be pretty ironic if we got Shattenkirk now. Not that we really need him, though.

A very nice deal for us. Low risk, possible high reward, only had to give up a fifth round pick. Murray's someone I've thought we could maybe target for some years now due to his injury history possibly affecting his value on the trade market. The hard part was always gouging out what his actual value is because when he is healthy he is a good two-way defenseman. It's just that he rarely has been healthy.

Very happy with this. Was bugged that we missed out on Nutivaara but Fitz delivered. A good stop-gap at the very least. Hopefully he stays healthy for most of the season.

Love this trade on its own. However, is our defence better today when we had Vatanen? Probably yes but not significantly. Still work to do.

a lot of that depends on smith. and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the coaching staff.

it’s a crime that scotty isn’t running our defense

I feel bad. :(

Now you can add sentimentality to my desire to see him succeed to go along with how he would do with the Devils.

I don't think we want to be putting this guy on the 1st pairing and play big minutes. That's just too risky. Less minutes would probably be better for him, even if he's talented enough to play a lot.

Don't really have the option given the rest of the LHD we have
