This pretty much cinches it that a trade is imminent to free up a spot for Carter on the team. Thank goodness.

And by imminent you mean Lou is calling every GM in the league going... You know you need a Zubrus on your fourth line... How about a Ruutu? Ok ok ok... Bernier... Oh, I just signed him? Please please please take Salvador, I'll throw in a Gionta.

I can't imagine a trade not happening. I went to capgeek and fiddled with some lines, and if my only stipulation is that Gionta and Bernier are my two forward scratches (Carter isn't signed), my fourth line almost always ends up something like Ryder - Josefson - Brunner. There's no way that's gonna happen, but I can't imagine Deboer sitting two scoring forwards, on a team desperate for goals, just to keep his fourth line looking more like a fourth line.

No wait, I can totally imagine that.

No it doesn't, it just clinches the fact Carter's the new 'stalker' (what the Devils kiddingly called Albelin when he hung around the team for months before finally signing in January).

Salary numbers aside, what I still don't get is why is Carter the one made to wait around instead of Gionta or Bernier? Was there ever a point were Lou thought he was leaving for a better contract he didn't want to match? I could see how out of the three he drew the most interest from other teams but if they really wanted him, why not wait until he signs else where or not then sign the other two (more Gio than Berner since his contract is practically nil). Were they that afraid of losing Gio?

Just seems like an odd turn of events from the outside.

I am eagerly awaiting whatever trade or trades Lou is going to make so that this roster makes sense. Re-signing Gionta & Bernier still baffles me. Put them on waivers and hope someone takes them. Carter still not being signed doesn't make any sense, but this camp tryout must mean he has a verbal agreement.

I'm still wondering if Clowe's concussion situation might be worse than the Devils are leading us to believe.

They've been swearing up and down that he's fine, he's skating and whatever. Part of me still won't believe that until he's skating at camp though, since we're notorious for lying about injuries (though not quite to the extent of say, Bill Belichick)

Albelin was skating with the team on a verbal agreement until freaking January a few years back. But he was at the end of his career too, Carter is a bit weirder since you'd figure he could actually get a contract from a team outside the Devils.

Maybe either Lou has promised him some serious pay raise, or he's unusually loyal? I would gladly give Carter Gionta AND Bernier's money if it would mean he'd be on the team and both of them would be gone.

You, bleedred, myself and others in this entire forum would probably agree.

He's the only player who has any semblance of talent out of that 4th-line.

I hate to beat up on Cordell, but I've been thinking of something.

How does he know this about Carter? It makes sense, but I don't know man. I'll be skeptical until TG or even Chere confirms it.

I thought I heard Swede here mention something too. I don't remember exactly though, and could be totally off.

Oh yeah, Carter will be there, one way or another.

But it will be interesting to see how this FW situation will be solved. I'm hearing Bernier could be on a really short leash. If his game isn't where it needs to be during camp he could be on his way out.

I actually like Bernier and hope he does well. But it sounds like Lou has some sorts of ultimatum with him.

If you like Bernier, you're the only one, Swede.

We'd like Bernier.....to LEAVE.

I like Bernier. He might not be good enough to take a roster spot because we have more warm bodies than the Moulin Rouge, but I'd rather him be a 13th forward than, say, Gionta.

I do hope we see some trades or waivers or something of the sort though, because until we do I just see Jake being shafted yet another year

I like Bernier, I just hate watching him try and play above his talent level. But I think that's more Deboer's fault. There's a reason Bernier was a first round draft pick while Gionta was barely a scoring forward in the AHL and Carter never had a season of double-digit points until he was put in a favorable situation with the Devils.

Bernier had one of the lowest on-ice shooting percentages in the league last season. It's probably a good bet that it won't stay that low. I think he at least deserves a shot to see if he can bounce back.

Some big time loyalty from Carter.
4th liners don't usually have this type of security, could be a risk. (Then again Tanner Glass got 3 yrs right off the bat, so what do I know)

“I’m here right now because I want to be here,†Carter told me today. “We’ll see if everything else can get worked out by then. I know there’s not a lot of time, but we’ll see. Anything can happen.â€

***

Right now, if another team called with a contract offer, would Carter be interested?

“I would have to say most likely not,†he said.

He's either too loyal or Lou basically told him he's going to be offered a contract

Based on what the quotes from carter I'm assuming he at least has a verbal agreement with Lou, but nothing yet because a trade or move needs to be made first.

or Lou basically told him he's going to be offered a contract

"Carter would not discuss whether the Devils made him a contract offer at any point this off-season"

So you know what that means
I think it is both. If he's going to make 4th liner money, he'd probably rather do it on a team he's comfortable with and a coach who trusts him. He was on waivers last time he was not in a Devils uniform.
Which is still a risk to wait around, but it makes a bit of sense.

Thirdly, also worth nothing that he just had his 2nd child. They're both very young, so he probably also has it in his mind to not uproot and play for a team where travel is minimal and he gets more nights at home.
