Thanks for the videos!

How does he compare to the Blue Jacket's first rounder Chinakhov?

Just purely by stat watching, they seem very similar. Same age, similar point totals last year in to MHL. Where Chinakhov seems to stand out is he is in the KHL this year and doing well (7 points in 13 games) whereas Gordin is being shuffled between KHL,VHL and MHL.

Purely in terms of the attacking upside I'd say their talent level is kind of similar with a slight edge to Chinakhov because his shot is pretty much elite (and Gordin's shot is "just" great) and I think he is a bit better in terms of passing abilities. But it's all the other all-around components that Chinakhov has clearly on a different level: intensity, work rate, willingness to play two-way game, physical game (even though Chinakhov is smaller) - so you can see why Chinakhov is in the KHL and Gordin still needs to establish himself on the VHL level.

Hopefully he gets out of MHL soon. Otherwise he might just be a guy that looks good on video.

His shot is definitely very good. I hope he can improve on the things that are holding him back (skating, pace). In those last 3 goals, he just basically stands around and waits for the puck to get to him.

The problem is that some teams prefer playing older players even in the VHL. St-Petersburg's core in the VHL is 22-28. They're in the bottom tier of the league. They have scored a total of 20 goals in 11 games (Gordin scored 2 of those in his 6 games). It's possible they keep him in the MHL to have a top team there and he'd have to earn a callup straight to the KHL... but then like Khusnutdinov he could just be called up to play very small minutes.

At his age, another season in the MHL is likely. He'll only turn 20 next summer.

Thanks for the added context. It's very different than the logic we see in NA.

Good to know.

that's what i saw, lots of standing around or coasting, he's going to need to break that habit.

Only that is not exactly true. Go see for yourself.

SKA-Neva St. Petersburg at eliteprospects.com

The size of the roster is obviously due to a lot of movement between leagues for young players. Otherwise they have exactly 3 forwards who are 1990-1991 born. All others are 1997 born and younger, the majority being 2000-2002 born.

I did say their core was 22-28...

Glukhov - 25
Nazarevich - 28
Ozhgikhin - 22
Kosorenkov - 22
Gimbatov - 29
Kurbatov - 23
Polodyan - 22
Ovechkin - 21
Vashchenko - 25

Those are the main players that have only played in the VHL. The younger SKA players sometimes play in the VHL, but they also split time in the MHL and the KHL. I'm not saying it never happens, but 19 years old are rarely used as "regulars" in the VHL from my experience. There was the Marchenko-Morozov-Podkolzin line, but that was an exception.

You are bending it to make it fit. Vaschenko, Nazarevich, Glukhov are defencemen. They might be a part of the core, but Gordin is certainly not competing with them for spots.

You also disregard the fact that we are talking about this certain team. Other VHL teams are different. There are VHL teams that are basically just second tier men teams without emphasis on development of prospects(in fact those might be even better spots for the teenagers to play on in terms of development, to really grow among vets. SKA Neva is nearly a MHL team with some vets influx). SKA is using SKA Neva first and foremost for player development and uses a fairly young roster with plenty of opportunity for a 19 year old to get playing time if he fits in. And the Marchenko-Morozov-Podkolzin line stepped right into the KHL from there, so basically if you are good enough you can move up in no time.

Could he make the Russian WJC squad if he keep up the pace? Maybe as a 13th forward / pp specialist?
RW is the one posistion that does not need improvement on that squad. He would have to have some sensational month, which is unlikely, to get there.

Well, he's 6+3 after just 5 games in the MHL, he's obviously too good for the league. I bet, Larionov will invite him to the camp (I hope, we'll have one).

he's up to 11 pts in 6 games, eliteprospects shows that going into today's games he was tied for the league lead in ppg for players that played more then 3 games. The player he's tied with is a 20 year old Emil Galiaskarov.

If he keeps this up and is one of the best players in the MHL at least hope he gets invited to the camp assuming there is one.
