You can move Ekholm to the right side, he plays both. Broberg could move to the right side as well but not ideal.

Nurse Ekholm
Broberg Ceci
Kulak Barrie
as a 6

Nurse VD/Ceci
Ekholm Broberg/VD
Kulak Barrie
as a 7

Either way we could use a top 4 LD and a RD - maybe you move Kulak for Ghost.

No easy solutions to this salary train wreck of a D corps we have.
Sure I just just don’t think playing d off side is all that smart. Sure some can do it but they are usually better on their natural side as picking picks up coming with pace to keep them in the o zone and sheltering it under pressure in your own end is easier without the puck being held towards the slot.

I think we legitimately need two new surefire top d in the next 12 months ideally one comes in the next few days. A left handed second pairing guy who can push nurse. And then a top pair RHD sadly which is near impossible

The odds of the Oilers trading Campbell are incredibly low, not necessarily because of his contract/performance (we've seen worse players be moved), but because he's a recently signed UFA on a long term deal and those contracts are almost never moved. Holland is too respectful to give up on Campbell so soon, even if it hurts the team.
Fair enough but I despise this option when we need to compete if the player isn’t doing it sorry you are letting down your end of the bargain we had to move on.

If there is a big upgrade it is a business. I am not saying do it every year but we need to do what is best for the team. I don’t care if Campbell is pissy mcdavid needs a cup and most outsiders looking in if we landed a definitive upgrade would understand the trade

Where did you hear this? I thought his entire career has been on the left.

Again, I am not expecting this to happen but if there was any thought of moving Campbell is this the sort of deal that could make sense. What more needs to be added to get SJ to bite.

To SJ Bouchard, 2013 1st, Yamamoto, JP, 2024 2nd, Petrov, Campbell $1.2M retained

To Edmonton: Karlsson $3.2M retained, Reimer $1.125 M retained by third team

It might seem that Campbell is untradeable but SJ will need a goalie for the next few years and the FA market for goalies is brutal next year Campbell at $3.8M for 4 years may not be a terrible risk for a team that is definitely not going to be in a win mode until at least 2026-27. They will pau about that for any of the FA's they might sign. At that point Campbell has one more year left and could be bought out very cheaply.

Including Bouchard is risky from the Oilers perspective but he is also potentially looking at a bigger cap hit than his contribution might justify. For SL he would be moving into his prime years just as their picks start to mature.

I'm with you on that. But If we can retain less on Campbell (make it around 500-750k) and give Barrie instead of Yamamoto, I'd do it. Heck, I'd even do a condition on the 2nd 2024 if we make the Stanley Cup final this year and Karlsson plays 60% of games next year, it turns into a 1st (Protected Top 10)

(FYI you mean 2023. 2013 has passed us already)

I absolutely agree with your assessment on the odds of them trading Campbell. It was more about the structure in the unlikely event they did look at it. I also think the only way that it would happen is if Campbell wanted a restart in a market with less pressure.

I agree 100%, I'm just highlighting that Holland doesn't strike me as a cutthroat "win at all costs" kind of GM. If he was, he JP would have been shipped out for cap space months ago.

I'm not so quick to move Barrie. He's struggling right now, but he's a very popular teammate by all accounts, and he's been money in the playoffs each year he's been here. I hesitate to ruffle the team chemistry too much right now if possible.

For sure and sorry if I took the post wrong!

I have had that conversation in January but I find it funny when we are pissy at holland to get us upgrades but the second someone mentions Kulak or anyone who signed recently it is like oh no that is a forbidden fruit I don’t care if we are getting a big upgrade.

At this juncture it is win at all costs if we don’t win in the next 2-4 years that is unforgivable for the calibre of stars he had and just needed to surround them

I think the Oilers could make a couple straightforward trades that could significantly improve the defense.

In ($7.1M):
Jensen
Chychrun

Out ($7.25-$7.6M):
Barrie
One of Pulj/Yam/Foegele (I don’t care who)
Picks and prospects

This leaves you with a strong, deep defense:
Nurse-Jensen
Chychrun-Ceci
Kulak-Bouchard
Broberg-Desharnais

My only concern would be losing Barrie from the power play. But I think the improvement at even strength and the penalty kill would be well worth it.

This is literally what constitutes hockey journalism now.

Someone has a gut feeling something might happen, and tweets about it.

I’ll disagree that it’s “journalism” - hard to be a journalist in one paragraph.

But they tweet it because it’s what people want. Fans hang on every word no matter what the person tweeting says.

Any time someone tweets anything remotely relevant to the Oilers, people here treat it as gospel, and then blame the team or the tweeter for whatever happens next. It’s really silly.

Oh I like Barrie, but if it means we can give them more value to take less in a cap retain on Campbell, I do it. Karlsson is a huge upgrade on Barrie anyways, so it'd be redundant to have Barrie and Karlsson. I just don't know if San Jose values Yamamoto as much as Barrie. I know Yamamoto is younger, but maybe they want to keep a puck moving dman and PP Specialist on the team when Karlsson is gone.

I have a feeling we see a minor move today, I don’t have any sources, just a feeling in my gut… could be too many Zyn pouches. Holland knows the pressure is mounting and a minor move would keep the wolves at bay for a few days.

Kostin is ready to return and I don’t think we want to send Desharnais down. We clearly value Lafferty and Jeannot just went (for waaaaaay to much).

Calling JP + 2nd for Lafferty. 3:07 PM. First broken by Mean Gene Principe. Mediterranean Pizza will be Bob’s go to pizza today. (I know I’ll get one of those right at least)
Im actually with ya on this one as well. I expected to wake up this morning and something would have been done

Ken Holland is the Joe Biden of hockey.

Even Biden can multitask!

Looking at that Jeannot trade again, I think the Bolts get burned on this one. That was a ridiculous return for a player with less of history than any of the guys they overpaid for before.

I get the theory about them targeting this player and paying the price for him but it’s ridiculous. At some point you have to step back and say I want him but not at that price.

I'm upset at Holland for dithering, but not paying that for Jeannot is fine, I don't think he's "that much" of difference maker.

Karlsson on the other hand.

I’m not getting stressed about Holland not doing anything yet. The main pieces we should be targeting haven’t moved yet.

That being said…he’s got to do something before the deadline passes.

I honestly think people read cap friendly and see Ekholm and Chychrun as LD/RD and think they can play RD. Maybe they can but it would be nice to base it in reality than what a website says. From what I gather, neither guy plays the right side much.

My 3 way trade for Karlsson
To SJ: Edm 1st 23 + bouchard + bourgalt + barrie + campbell
To edm Karlsson retained 25%, reimer 50% retained by arizona, bjustad, ghost 50 %.
To Arz: yam + 2nd 2023 + 2nd 24 and 3rd 23 or 24 from SJ

Out equals 5 + 4.5 + 3.1+ .8633 = 13463300
In equals 8.4375 + 2.25 + 1.125 + .900 = 11813400

Would clear a little cap add the player we need on the right side.
