The first major event of the NHL offseason is upon us as all the teams have their protected lists in and now we........

Wait.

Rosters are frozen until July 22nd as the Seattle Kraken form their inaugural squad this Wednesday on July 21st.

All eyes are on Seattle, as they pick their players and tell them to come as they are, as they were and what Francis will want them to be (had to find a way to get Nirvana and Seattle grunge into a thread somewhere).

The expansion draft begins at 6 p.m. (in Alberta) on Wednesday night.

Continue on here!!

Can the Oilers buyout both neal and koskinen this Off-season?

I think the Oilers are smartly looking at trading Koskinen at 50% so they arent stuck with he 1.5M in dead cap space the following year. Nurse is at 5.6M and that would go towards his likely 2M raise.

Yes . just not smart

I thought there was a limit? We still have Sekeras contract on the books
AFAIK there is no limit on the number of buyouts a team can have. There was a limit on compliance buy outs, but that isn't a thing anymore, and there is a limit on the number of players a team can retain salary on. But no limit on buyouts.

Yes there is a limit of 3 retained salary transactions.

Buyout Koski now and Neal next offseason. 1.9x2 of dead cap is easier to digest than 1.9x4. Hang onto Neal's cap as a placeholder for Nurse/Pulju raises + 1.9M

Playing around with the Expansion Draft sim on Capfriendly and it seems super shallow at center.

I wonder if they do roll the dice on a guy like Johansen.

Holding off a year only saves you a year. There's no benefit to waiting out the buyout. They need the money now. They can account for the $2m it'll cost them in 2025.

Nice catch. Holland needs to bow out of the Hyman sweepstakes. That player and that contract is likely to disappoint on his new team.
I think we need to prepare for it. Seems like this move has been telegraphed for awhile now.

Retained Salary (1 for $750,000)
Lucic

Buyouts (1 for $1,500,000)
Sekera

RFA: Kahun, Khaira, Yamamoto
UFA: Barrie, Chiasson, Ennis, Koekkoek, Kulikov, Larsson, P. Russell, Smith

Players signed: 18 + 1 LTIR
Cap hit: $68,762,962
Carryover: $669,339
Cap space: $12,067,699

If Spector is right about Larsson's contract, cap space goes down to $8,167,699.

Neal's buyout would raise it to $12,001,032.

Another buyout for Koskinen takes it up to $15,001,032 with 9 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 1 goalie signed.

Might be able to trade him with a minimal asset if he only has one season left and you retain 50%. What would it cost for a team to eat $2.875M or two teams taking on $1.437M?
